Honda 3R-C is part motorcycle, part Segway, all weird

Someone at Honda’s been watching too much ‘Akira,’ because the automaker’s latest electric vehicle concept looks a lot like the main character Kaneda’s bike with training wheels. pOriginally posted at a href=”http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-31346_7-10460029-252.html” class=”origPostedBlog”Geneva Auto Show 2010/a/p

Ford Adds HOV Routing to Sync

Ford_Sync_2011.jpg
Ford is unveiling a new voice-activated version of Sync that will let customers take advantage of High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes when applicable. The system will come with select 2011 Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles, and will feature HOV lane guidance for over 2,500 miles of carpool routes in various congested metropolitan areas throughout North America.
The new 2011 Sync navigation system, powered by TeleNav (the same good folks behind AT&T Navigator and Sprint Navigator), also features HD Radio support, plus a SIRIUS Travel Link portfolio with traffic reports, incident alerts, and route suggestions to get around trouble areas. In addition, 2011 Sync includes improved street data displays with branded POI information, and shows more street names at each zoom level than before.
Later this year, Ford Sync will also integrate with a new Sync Traffic, Directions, and Information app for downloading destinations from a home or work computer via Mapquest. The 2011 Mustang will be the first car to receive the new Sync setup.

Sprint Announces More 4G Cities for 2010

Sprint_4G_Modem.jpg

Sprint has reconfirmed plans to bring its WiMAX-powered 4G service to a number of major U.S. cities in 2010.
The list of prospective cities includes Boston, Denver, Kansas City, Houston, Minneapolis, New York, San Francisco, and Washington D.C.
The carrier said in a statement that it plans to cover 120 million Americans by the end of 2010. Sprint currently sells several 4G-compatible products, including the Overdrive 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot.
WiMAX 4G delivers theoretical speeds of up to 10 times faster than EV-DO, but real world speeds have been all over the board in our tests.
So far, it’s also still confined to modems and routers. Last week, Sprint said it plans to launch its first 4G WiMAX phone sometime in the second half of 2010.

LA Port Police Adopt Real-Time Mobile Surveillance

LA_Port_Reality_Mobile.jpg
The LA Port Police have signed a deal with Reality Mobile to try out RealityVision, an enterprise-class, real-time mobile collaboration program.
That sounds innocuous, but the real story is in the instant video and data sharing capabilities: any user on the network can view live video from any source, as well as feed video and other critical data the other way, from smartphones or other video sources to a central command console.
The goal is to extend the Port’s police surveillance and response capacity. Reality Mobile said in a statement that the platform will integrate securely with the Port’s existing security infrastructure, and will receive feeds from over 350 fixed cameras.
The LA Port is the busiest container port in the U.S., and the 8th busiest in the world, according to Reality Mobile.

Apple Not Budging from $25 Billion War Chest

apple logo.jpgApple plans to perch on its $25 billion nest egg until it’s ready to make “big, bold” risks, Apple chief executive Steve Jobs said at the company’s shareholder meeting, according to Bloomberg.

Apple shareholders re-approved the board of directors and Apple’s proposed compensation plan.

“When you take risks, it’s like jumping in the
air. When they don’t work out, it’s nice to know the ground is always
there,” the chief executive said, according to Reuters.

Apple recently announced the iPad, and reported record revenues for the fourth quarter, buoyed by a resurgence in consumer spending. On Thursday, the company reported selling its 10 billionth song via iTunes. Radio Shack, meanwhile, reported that it was preparing a widespread rollout of the iPhone across its stores.

Apple chief operating officer Tim Cook recently said that Apple has considered acquiring or merging with another large company, but that none have met its strategic or financial requirements.

“We don’t let our money burn a hole in our
pocket,” Cook said.  And so unless we find something that really makes sense for
Apple shareholders, we’re not going to do it … If we find a large one,
we won’t be shy about it, but we won’t do it to do it.”

Astronaut Looks Out New Space Station Window

NASA_ISS_Cupola_Astronaut.jpg
“Hey mom! I’m in a space station!” OK, well, I’m not sure exactly what NASA astronaut and shuttle flight STS-130 commander George Zamka was thinking here–but it’s a great shot.
As Popular Science reports, the Feb. 19 photo shows Zamka looking out from the newly installed Cupola observation deck on the International Space Station, before heading home on shuttle Endeavor.
In addition to offering an expansive vista on the universe, Cupola aims to give residents of the space station better views to control the attached robotic arm, according to the report.
Astronauts completed the installation of the $27 million, 10-foot-wide Cupola observation deck on February 15. It features a 31-inch main window on top, plus six smaller windows around the sides.

Samsung makes Skype for new LED lit HDTVs official

Panasonic and LG won’t be the only ones with Skype-enabled HDTVs, though we peeped it in the specs earlier, Samsung has officially announced its new 7000 and 8000 series televisions will also include access. Accessible through the embedded Samsung Apps service, it appears it will work with the new HD video processing webcams just like the others, so users can log in to or create an account with the remote then make video or voice calls away from the PC. We heard at CES those cameras could run as high as $200, check out the CES 2010 demo from Panasonic to see if couch videoconferencing is worth the additional expense.
