Mio Unveils the Moov V780

MioMoovV780.jpg

The market for stand-alone GPS devices may be eroding, but that only means navigation companies need to work harder to create the next generation of mapping products. Feast your eyes on the Mio Moov V780, which will make its debut at CeBIT 2010 this week. It’s slim and offers a big 7-inch screen, but it’s what’s inside that really has our attention.

Going beyond navigation, the Moov V780 includes a digital TV receiver and wireless connectivity. It can play HD movies and videos up to 720p and includes HD output for connecting to your set. the Moov V780 also comes with a carry case with keyboard, so it can easily become a Web browser or e-mail station. And it will show photos and YouTube videos, and includes a slick new 3D interface.

Mio will give more details at a press conference on Thursday. Nice move, Mio; this could be a hit of the show.

Rare Nintendo Game Fetches $41,300 on eBay

stadiumeventsgamebox.jpg

How many hours did your parents spend telling you that you were wasting your life sitting in front of Nintendo games for hours on end? All right, so you never became a professional gamer–but if you’re among 200 or so lucky gamers, you may have a payday coming after all.

Take, for example, the story of Dave, who discovered an NES game called Stadium Events among a collection of nearly 200 titles in his basement. The game, which carried an original retail price of $29.99 (that tag was still adhered to the shrinkwrap), snagged $41,300 on eBay.

According to Dave, Stadium Events was destined for the Goodwill pile. Then he spotted a story online in which a North Carolina resident got $13,000 for the game on the auction site. Dave had never bothered to open it, because he didn’t have the obligatory Power Pad peripheral to play it on.

Mighty Marvel Heroes Invade TV Screens

MarvelTV.jpg

Start saving your pennies, true believers, because those earth-shattering heroes from the house of ideas are now invading HDTV screens near you. (It’s fun to write like Stan Lee.) The comics juggernaut that’s never said no to a license deal has partnered with RTC23, a Florida-based company I’ve never heard of either, to offer HDTVs featuring Marvel’s mightiest. According to the company’s About Us page, RTC23 use the 8-to-10-second delay in powering on LED and LCD HDTVs to show  a pre-set image. So when you power on one of these Marvel sets, you’ll get 8 seconds of your favorite hero before the regular screen kicks-in.

The hero of your choice is also on the TV’s frame. The company is offering sets from 22 inches to 46 inches, and with LCD or LED screens. You can even buy a “collector package” of multiple TVs in case you feel the need to own them all. Maybe you should buy two collector’s packages, and poly-bag one set to keep it nice. (via Crenk)

2008 CyberNet Awards: Biggest Tech Stories of 2008

This article was written on December 30, 2008 by CyberNet.

cybernet awards 2008-1.pngFor this installment of the 2008 CyberNet Awards, we are taking a look at some of the Biggest Tech Stories of 2008 . A lot has gone on this year in the Tech World, that’s for sure, but some stories created far more buzz than others.

Without further ado here are our awards for the Biggest Tech Stories of 2008.

–5th Place: Macworld Without Steve Jobs

The buzz level soared on the Internet when the announcements were made that Apple was going to be pulling out of Macworld and Steve Jobs would not be giving the final keynote in January. People were left to speculate why Apple would do such a thing. Was it Steve Jobs’ health? Is Apple just that controlling that they didn’t want someone else running the show? People are still in shock over this move by Apple which is supposedly all about politics.

–4th Place: T-Mobile G1 Powered by Android

Just a couple of months ago, T-Mobile launched the G1 phone powered by Google’s very own Android. While some have complained that it’s not “polished,” others feel it’s a great solution for those who want an “iPhone like” phone, without needing to switch to AT&T. It’s also affordable, and abundantly available, and has generated a lot of buzz over the last year.

–3rd Place: Microsoft’s Ad Campaign

What can I say about Microsoft’s Ad campaign? The price tag on the campaign was $300 million yet we aren’t quite sure that they have accomplished what they set-out to do. Sure, it got people talking about the company, but not necessarily in a good way. They started out the campaign with bizarre ads featuring Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates, then they turned to “I’m a PC” ads, mocking Apple’s Get a Mac campaign.

Oh how I wish they would have spent more time pointing out Vista’s shining features to help clean-up their image, but they didn’t. For $300 million, we were hoping for something a little better. On the bright side, these ads sure got people talking and speculating on what they would do next!

–2nd Place: iPhone 3G/ iPhone 2.0 Firmware

For Apple, 2008 was the year of the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 2.0 Firmware. Even before the official announcement of the iPhone 3G was made, the Internet was full of people speculating on what kinds of features the new phone would have. There was also the anticipation of what the iPhone 2.0 Firmware would offer. The iPhone 3G launch didn’t go as smoothly as Apple expected, with signal and battery life issues along the way. The App store has definitely lived up to its hype though. With its ups and downs, the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 2.0 Firmware has got to be one of the biggest stories of 2008.

–1st Place: Yahoo/Microsoft Saga

By far, for us at least, the biggest story of the year was the whole Yahoo/Microsoft saga. To think, Microsoft offered Yahoo $34 bucks per share, or $44.6 billion back in early February, which Yahoo turned down. Today, Yahoo shares are almost in the single digits, sitting at about $11.90 (as of writing this).

After the news first broke that Microsoft had made an offer, the web was full of buzz about the topic for months as talks went back and forth and Yahoo announced that they were “partnering with Google.” In the end, no deal ever came about between Microsoft and Yahoo, and Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang ended up stepping down as CEO.

–-And Your Winners–-

Now it is time for you to chime in! Let us know in the comments what were the “Biggest Tech Stories of 2008.”

TAG Heuer and Tesla Motors team up to show off products you can't afford

The Tesla Roadster runs on batteries, and so too do (many) TAG Heuer watches. It’s out of this obvious correlation that the TAG Heuer Tesla Roadster was born, a one-off special edition skinned in some unfortunate graphics then blessed with an extra slot in the center console for a similarly spendy Meridiist phone. There’s also room in there for a one-fifth second analog Heuer Limited Edition Stopwatch, which sounds like a very useful addition indeed. Those attending Geneva Motor Show later this week will have a chance to see this (otherwise stock) car in-person, while the rest of us will have to make do with the gallery of photos below, which truly shows that “technology — whether worn on your wrist or driven on the road — can help us live better while we tread more lightly on this planet.” These words courtesy of Elon Musk, who can surely be seen at the show wearing a giant piece of wrist-borne chronography.

Netgear brings the goods to CeBIT: HD streamers, HomePlug AV adapters

Another month, another blockbuster trade show. CeBIT‘s show floor doesn’t open up until tomorrow (and yeah, we’ll be storming it like no other), but Netgear‘s wasting precisely no time in unveiling its latest wares. The two pieces that are nearest and dearest to our hearts are the WNHDB3004 and WNHDB3004, the former of which is an 802.11n HD Home Theater Kit and the latter of which is a universal WiFi adapter that adds wireless support to any AV product with an Ethernet jack. Users interested in streaming “multiple, simultaneous, jitter-free 1080p HD video streams wirelessly throughout the home” should certainly give the first a look, as it enables instant wireless streaming from your existing router to any component with an Ethernet port; think of this as the beautiful alternative to running a 50 foot patch cable through your living room and simultaneously eroding your relationship with Mr. / Mrs. Significant Other. The outfit also doled out a few SMB-centric ReadyNAS devices and a couple of HomePlug AV boxes with AC outlet passthroughs, all of which are detailed there in the source links.

Worldwide PSN meltdown; older PS3 consoles paralyzed, Sony working on fix

It seems a major worldwide firmware bug has affected most PlayStation 3s, preventing the consoles from connecting to the PlayStation Network and in many cases (including our own) not allowing for offline game play as well.

Ice Injures 15 in NYC Sony Building

Over the weekend, ice shattered the ceiling of an atrium at the midtown Manhattan Sony building during a Purim party. Left over from last week’s winter storm, the ice fell from the 32nd floor,

Eight people were sent to the New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center for minor injuries. The seven others declined treatment.

According to The New York Times, the building’s owner may
face fines
