Apple TV Prototype Sells on eBay for 46 Bucks

img1675w

You’d be naive to think Apple churns out hit products without doing homework first. Before gadgets hit the market, companies invest heavily in research and development, which often results in early prototypes that rarely see the light of day. A good example is a prototype of an Apple television box (above) from 1995, which recently sold on eBay for $46.

The Apple Interactive Television Box (ITV for short) was made 10 years before the release of the Apple TV. It kind of looks like a retro TiVo. The box features chips made by Motorola, Texas Instruments and VLSI Technology.

It was equipped with a bunch of old-school ports that you’ve probably forgotten about today: stereo audio RCA jacks, a Mac serial port, S-Video, RF in, RF out, RJ-45 Ethernet, ADB port, HDI-30 SCSI port and dual SCART connectors. The OS was a subset of the Mac OS with QuickDraw and QuickTime software, according to the Apple Museum.

Apple tested the ITV prototypes only internally in 1993, but in 1994 the company formed a partnership with British Telecom to launch a consumer trial with 2,500 households participating. The project was canceled in late 1995 when it was clear that ITV would not become commercially successful.

Home entertainment has been a tough market to crack. Apple still refers to its Apple TV, which was released in 2005, as a “hobby” due to its moderate success. And it’s obvious why: There are just so many different ways people watch video content, whether it’s through digital cable, On-Demand, iTunes, DVDs and so on.

Another great example of a classic prototype was Bashful, an early Apple tablet made with the help of Frog Design back in 1983.

Grace Digital Audio announces Solo WiFi internet radio tuner

Interested in a WiFi internet radio but already have a perfectly good stereo? Then you’re just the sort of person that Grace Digital Audio is after with its new Solo WiFi internet radio tuner, which simply turns any stereo (or set of speakers, for that matter) into an internet radio. Apart from the lack of speakers, the device is fairly similar to Grace’s recently announced Allegro WiFi radio, with it packing the same support for services like Pandora and Sirius internet radio, the same backlit LCD display, and the same support for Grace’s remote app for the iPhone / iPod touch (plus a standard remote, of course). Sold? Then you can snag this one directly from Grace right now for $124.99, or look for it to hit Best Buy, Sears and other retailers in July.

The 404 574: Where we’re wasting away in Margaritaville (podcast)

(Credit:

Dr. Brendan

Our third host, Jeff Bakalar, doesn’t get sick very often, but when it pains, it roars. The last two days have been rough (no offense to Wilson), but we can all breathe easier now that his 10 arms are back running the engineering board just in time for Cinco de Mayo! Unfortunately, we ran out of margarita mix awhile ago, but will you settle for a Jimmy Buffet reference with an extra-funny episode of The 404 Podcast on the side? It’s all we got!

My iPhone mysteriously broke last weekend and I thought I was doomed to suffer this ultra-budget Samsung flip phone for the next few months until Wilson referred me to New York’s own iPhone repair specialist, Dr. Brendan (not a certified doctor).

Yesterday I took my phone to the clinic (Brendan’s apartment) and left fifteen minutes later with a brand new display! Best 75 bones I’ve ever spent, if you don’t count that place where I put that thing that time. Dr. Brendan fixes all sorts of Apple products and we plan to have him and his partner on the show in the near future, but in the meantime check out his Facebook page and tell him The 404 sent you!

"Seriously, I can't breathe in this mask"–Spiderman

Nerds across the world love to celebrate International Free Comic Day, but a greedy thief in Australia dipped his fingers in the wrong honeypot last Saturday. Forty-five-year old store owner Michael Baulderstone spotted a man trying to steal a collector’s X-Men comic from his store that was worth $160; luckily, he was wearing a Spiderman costume to celebrate the event and cornered the criminal while signaling to two Jedi Knights (also shopping for comics) to guard the door with their lightsabers until the police arrived.

Silly Padawans: colored plastic flashlights are for kids…and air traffic controllers. Anyway, if the perp had any common sense he would’ve just shouted a George Lucas sighting at the Popeye’s Chicken next door and made his escape.

There are a few more stories to cover on the show today including a Catholic Church turning to Facebook to recruit new priests and a collection of Calls From the Public from last week–who doesn’t love leftovers?

Keepin’ it real fake: GiPhone F98 is the KIRFiest next gen iPhone KIRF to ever KIRF

It’s been nearly a month since a China Grabber employee drunkenly left his experimental prototype next gen GiPhone at a Sushi Bar in Shenzhen, where it was found and sold to Shanzai.com for several thousand Yuan — and the gadget world hasn’t been the same since. The GiPhone F98 features, as all of these KIRFs do, dual SIM cards, an FM Radio, an “iPhone style” UI, WiFi, Bluetooth, and compatibility with 850MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz, and 1900MHz GSM. And it’s one of the thickest phones we’ve seen in a long time! (See for yourself after the break.) Available now for $150, if you dare.

[Thanks, Jessica]

nPower’s PEG Personal Energy Generator up for pre-order, starts kinetically recharging gadgets in June

nPower's PEG Personal Energy Generator up for pre-order, starts kinetically recharging gadgets in JuneCharging battery-powered things while traveling has always been a challenge, and while there’s no shortage of portable solar chargers on the market, none have exactly tickled our particular fancies. Maybe the PEG from nPower will enable us to get some juice on the go, a kinetic-based “personal energy generator” that pledges to recharge gadgets by harnessing your movement. Sadly, the company lists no actual specs for the device beyond USB 2.0 compatibility, leaving us guessing when it comes to the all-important question of “How far do I need to run with this thing to recharge my celly?” We’ll find out in June when the $149 wunder-baton ships. Order now and you can get yourself a limited edition model with “First Mover” engraved on there. Better than “Late Bloomer,” we suppose.

[Thanks, Daniel]

Kin available online starting tomorrow, in Verizon stores on May 13

Dearest members of the Upload Generation: the wait to buy the Kin of your dreams is a short one — provided Mommy and Daddy are willing to pony up the $30 a month in data charges, of course. Verizon will be selling both the Kin One and Kin Two online starting tomorrow, May 6, for $49.99 and $99.99 respectively, after you agree to a two-year contract and come to terms with the fact that you’ll be paying $100 more upfront while you wait for your rebate to be mailed to you on a debit card (par for the course these days). If you’d rather play with the devices first, your wait isn’t much longer — you’ll be able to score both of them in Verizon retail locations starting a week later on the 13th.

Crucial issues RealSSD C300 firmware fix, bricks more drives

Crucial issues RealSSD C300 firmware fix, bricks more drives

Crucial’s RealSSD C300 had a sizable problem coming out of the gate: price. Initially starting at $800 for 64GB 256GB it cost more than most laptops (it’s now down to $700), but crazy people pay crazy amounts for crazy performance and so off to retail it went. Recently, Anand over at AnandTech indicated that his review sample “apparently bricked itself” before eventually coming back to life — albeit at a ridiculously reduced speed. Yesterday Crucial issued an official firmware “fix” for his particular problem and, as you could probably tell by the use of quotes there, it isn’t necessarily a good thing. Numerous people in the Crucial forums are reporting that this update has completely bricked their drives, while others are simply unable to apply it in the first place. This particular piece of firmware is still available on Crucial’s site (version 0002), and we would definitely advise steering clear until at least version 0003 — maybe 0004 for good measure.

Update: We heard from Kristin at Micron Technology, who passed along the following update:

We wanted to let you know that we’re aware of the issues some users are experiencing with the firmware update tool. Initially, it sounds like there needs to be some additional steps in the process for their specific systems. As you know, aside from the issues experienced, there were/are several users that had success with their updates.

We’ll post an update on the forum as soon as we have more information, and will keep you apprised with what we know.

Additionally, we had the pricing wrong on the initial C300. It was $800 for 256GB, not 64GB.
