Rock Band 3 purportedly gaining keytar peripheral, infinite amounts of our love

Look, we’ve no qualms with keyboards — Elton John is permanently embedded in our playlists, it’ll be the first instrument we teach our robotic children, and it’s easily the most underrated part of Justin Bieber’s spectacularness. But there’s no arguing that having a keytar peripheral is far, far more awesome in the grand scheme of things. According to the same mole on ArsTechnica that has correctly nailed a new PS3 bundle, the PSP go and Xbox 360 price cuts, Rock Band 3 will feature a new keytar peripheral, which will undoubtedly destroy our productivity for an indefinite amount of time. We’re also told that Mad Catz will be taking over the production of RB hardware, leaving Harmonix only responsible for touching up the software. There’s still no indication of when this mythical device will be hitting your local Game Stop, but it’s certainly safe to slide your pre-order alert system to Orange.

HD 101: Overscan and why all TVs do it

An NFL Network football with an example of overscan.

The concept of overscan seems particularly difficult for geeks to comprehend — normal people usually don’t care to even understand it — and some even get down right confrontational when they first learn that all TVs do it. But the fact is that even the latest LCDs and plasmas don’t show all 2 million pixels of a 1080p signal out of the box. Instead about 3 percent of ’em are cropped off the edges (as illustrated by the red line in the image above) and the remaining pixels are scaled to fill in all the pixels of your HDTV. The real kick in the head is that the reason isn’t a good one, especially when you consider the advanced technology that’s available today. So in this HD 101 we’re going to cover what overscan is, why it’s there, and finally how to “fix” it.

Other HD 101 goodness:
What is ATSC, PSIP, QAM, and 8-VSB?
How to use Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD with your PS3
Why there are black bars on HDTVs

Debunk: Steve Ballmer not speaking at WWDC

An analyst named Trip Chowdhry at Global Equities Research set off a firestorm of rumors last night after he claimed that Steve Ballmer would appear onstage with Steve Jobs at WWDC for exactly seven minutes to announce Visual Studio development for the iPhone — and the maelstrom of crazytalk quickly expanded to include everything from a Bing partnership to Silverlight for the iPhone. Turns out all that chatter was just as insane and untrue as you’d expect, though: Microsoft’s official Twitter account just clamped down on the speculation, saying that Ballmer isn’t speaking at WWDC, or appearing on Dancing with the Stars. Sorry kids — looks like we’ll have to just hold out hope for next season.

NBC and Time Warner inform Apple they’ll be sticking to Flash, thank you very much

When the iPad bandwagon was launched in late January, ABC and Netflix quickly jumped onboard with tailor-made apps, while CBS and others started transitioning their content to HTML5-compliant formats, all in the name of not being left behind by the revolution. As it turns out, however, some content providers will be letting this ride pass them by, at least for the moment. The New York Post today reports that big media heavyweights Time Warner and NBC Universal have turned their noses up at the iPad’s high entry demands and will be sticking to what works:

Sources said several large media companies, including Time Warner and NBC Universal, told Apple they won’t retool their extensive video libraries to accommodate the iPad, arguing that such a reformatting would be expensive and not worth it because Flash dominates the Web.

According to the NYP article, these conglomerates have been emboldened by the forthcoming arrival of competing tablets from the likes of Dell and HP, and will be seeking their fortunes in the mobile space atop Adobe’s winged stallion of web domination that we commonly know as Flash. This is a decision sure to end in tears — we just don’t know who’ll be doing the crying when it all shakes out.

Altek teases ‘Leo,’ monster 14 megapixel smartphone for unveiling next month

We don’t have a lot of detail to work on here, but Altek — a company that’s no stranger to ridiculous optics slapped on the back of a phone — is chatting up its new Leo model that will officially bow at next month’s CommunicAsia show in Singapore. It’s being ominously called a “smartphone” without talking about the platform at hand, but judging from the key layout, we’re going to fathom a guess that it might be running Android. Around back, you have a zoom lens parked in front of a 14 megapixel sensor that’s capable of 720p video capture, and the support for WiFi and HSPA alike should help you ferry those shots to where they need to go. Pricing, availability, and other pertinent details will hopefully follow — but for now, follow the break for another teaser shot along with Altek’s PR.
