Elgato’s EyeTV HD records shows to your Mac, slings live to your iPad

How’s that Apple tattoo treating you? Good, good. Well, Elgato has something for the faithful: the new EyeTV HD. The device grabs a 1080i signal over component from your DVR or cable box or Blu-ray player, and records that video to your Mac using Elgato’s own desktop DVR software. The shows can then be auto-transcoded to iPhone or iPad-friendliness, providing you a bit of much needed Animal Planet during your commute the next day. That’s all well and good, but the real kicker is the live streaming the device can push to your iPad or iPhone, using an IR blaster to change the channel on your cable box. It’s all rosy except for the fact that you’ll need to plug this directly into your Mac and your cable box, meaning that they’ll have to be in fairly close proximity (there’s a six foot USB cable included). The unit retails for $200 and is available now directly from Elgato or Apple stores. PR is after the break.

We haven’t plugged in the box yet, but we played around with Elgato’s setup using an iPad 3G and found it pretty impressive. The streaming quality isn’t really at, say, a Netflix level (it’s more suited to a phone screen), but it’s certainly passable, and the interface for browsing your own channels and recordings is very pleasant. We also loved the inclusion of meta data and chapters in the recorded shows and movies that had been loaded onto the device (you can check that out in the gallery below). Elgato might’ve just released the most elegant “analog hole” yet.

Pandigital Releases $199 Full-Color Touchscreen Novel eReader

Granted, it was rather forcefully nudged along by the Apple iPad, but the Pandigital e-reader seems likely to be yet another nail in the coffin of the current crop of black-and-white readers, such as the Amazon Kindle in its various iterations.

Pandigital today announced that it has extended beyond its digital photo-frame roots with the release of the Novel eReader, a $199 e-book reader with a 7-inch TFT LCD color touchscreen display. The device features access to Barnes & Noble’s eBookstore and the company’s LendMe technology, which lets users share e-books with friends.

The Novel has 800-by-600 resolution, Wi-Fi, a mini-USB port, a SD/MMC slot, and 1GB of built-in memory. It can read a number of file formats, including PDF, ePub, and HTML.

The Novel eReader ships in June.

Intel to announce dedicated tablet silicon at Computex

During this morning’s press conference on the new Core i3, i5 and i7 ULV processors, Intel PC Client Group Vice President Mooly Eden revealed that Chipzilla will launch that special “tablet solution” we had heard about at Computex next week. No details were given on this “dedicated silicon for the tablet space,” but we can assume that it’s going to fall into the Atom line up. Whether it will be an extension of the Moorestown family or just be an outgrowth of the Pineview platform found in netbooks and nettops remains to be seen, but you can bet on us listening up for more info when we’re live from Taipei next week. Apple Announces Steve Jobs WWDC Keynote

apple logo.jpgHear that? It’s the sound of your iPhone 3GS becoming rapidly obsolete. Apple today announced that it will be opening its annual World Wide Developer Conference with a keynote from Steve Jobs.

Jobs will take the stage at the Moscone Center in San Francisco on Monday, June 7 at 10am

No word on exactly what Jobs will use the platform to announce, but the smart money is on the final version of the 4th-generation iPhone, prototypes of which seem to have been showing up all over the place in the past couple months.

The event, which is targeted at Apple developers, sold out in eight days. It features “five key technology tracks,” including Application Frameworks; Internet & Web; Graphics & Media; Developer Tools; and Core OS. For the last couple of years, however, the key draw for the general public is the announcement of the latest version of the iPhone.

Official: HP Slate Will Run WebOS

hp-slate-side-imagePC chief of HP Taiwan, Monty Wong, has told daily trade paper Digitimes that Palm’s WebOS will be used on “smartphones and tablets”, a category that would include an HP Slate. According to Digitimes, the newly-acquired OS will only be used for these touch-based devices. Netbooks and other computers will continue to use desktop operating systems.

Wong said that “HP will announce more details after the completion of the Palm acquisition at the end of July.” So far Digitimes offers no other details (the story is classed as a “snapshot”, and should be added to shortly), but the move to use WebOS on slates and phones is really an obvious one. After all, why buy Palm otherwise?

Between Android, the iPad and now HP’s tablet plans, this newly-reinvigorated device category is white-hot. Apple has proved that people are willing to buy a simple, easy to use device that frees them from babysitting a full PC OS. HP clearly sees its mobile future as a vertical system, just like Apple’s, instead of just churning out commodity PC hardware for Microsoft to slap Windows into. The next stage of the computer’s evolution is well under way.

Intel officially outs Core i3, i5 and i7 ULV processors for those ultra-thin laptops

We can’t say this one is much of a surprise, but it sure is good to get the official details on Intel’s latest ultra-low voltage Core i3, i5 and i7 processors. Just as we had heard, the new dual-core CPUs will be landing this June, and though they won’t be replacing the current Celeron and Pentium ULVs on the market, they’ll certainly provide a more powerful option for the “ultra-thin” category. All the new 32-nanometer Nehalam chips are said to provide 32 percent better performance than previous ULVs, but a 20 percent power reduction than standard-voltage Core 2010 CPUs. And just like those regular Core 2010 processors, these get the same Turbo Boost and Hyper-threading performance advantages. All the processors have TDPs of 17 watts which is what is enabling the 50 percent improvement in thermal performance. That’s all the technical details Intel shared this morning, but it shouldn’t be long before we up and testing the performance and battery life of these new chips in slim laptops from MSI, Lenovo and Acer. Back in February when we first caught wind of BeBionic’s myo-electric, very realistic bionic hand, we were quite impressed. The finished product was just unveiled at ISPO World Congress in Leipzig Germany, and it’s looking even better than our first glimpse gave away. We don’t know a ton more about how the hand functions — it boasts a fully integrated wireless chip, fully customizable functions to control speed, grip force, and grip patterns, plus aesthetic bonuses such as silicone skin overlays in 19 different tones. Nokia and Yahoo announce ‘worldwide strategic alliance’ on email, IM, maps, and more

Carol Bartz and Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, CEOs of Yahoo! and Nokia, respectively, are on stage right now announcing a “strategic relationship” between the two companies on some of their core services. Nokia will be using Yahoo to power its Ovi email and IM services, while Yahoo will be using Nokia / NAVTEQ’s competencies for its mapping and navigation services. Both companies see it as a way to grow their respective userbases, with Yahoo hoping to grab onto the 9 million Ovi users out there, while Nokia hopes that Yahoo could provide it a bit of a USA mojo. Interestingly, Olli-Pekka confronted the US problem head on: “We are an unusual global company in the sense that we are clearly a global leader in our industry, and yet we do not lead in the US.” Carol was similarly forthcoming, saying that Yahoo had “lost its focus on maps a couple years ago,” then correcting herself, saying that they “chose to focus on other areas.” The first merged services should launch in the second half of this year.

During Q&A the big answer to everything seemed to be “scale,” but we also heard Carol toss in “downstream” at an opportune moment. When asked how this relates to Android, iPhone and so forth, Carol clarified that this doesn’t change anything they’re doing on those fronts. “It’s not exclusive from that point.” Each service will be branded as “powered by Yahoo” or “powered by Ovi.” Yahoo will be announcing some “social-like” services for its mail and IM soon, but it’s unclear if that’s specifically related to this announcement. Neither company is talking financial specifics, but Olli-Pekka did make it very clear that a Yahoo-branded device wasn’t forthcoming.
