Amazon job posting hints at ‘completely new’ video game technology

We love it: Stealth projects! New technology! Amazon has only recently announced that it will be selling Xbox Live Arcade content, and now it seems that the company has its feelers out for a new Senior Product Manager for Digital Video Games. Are you “smart, analytical, and enthusiastic?” Care to develop and launch a “stealth project” that will result in “a completely new type of technology for customers?” We thought you might be. Hit up that source link to get started. For our part, we look forward to seeing what comes of all this.

[Thanks, Daniel]

Should Apple allow English porn iPad app?

Is Apple right to allow the Sun newspaper to have an iPad app featuring topless women? Is this a purely commercial decision? OLPC XO 1.5 now shipping with Sugar Learning Platform and GNOME Desktop

OLPC may still not have any completely new hardware ready to roll out, but it is now giving its slightly improved XO 1.5 laptop a bit of a boost. The organization has just announced that the laptop will now be shipping with both the simplified Sugar Learning Platform and the more full-fledged GNOME Desktop for some added productivity. What’s more, the organization has also confirmed that its forthcoming XO-HS (with a new keyboard more suitable for high school students) will come with the same dual-boot option as well, and will be launched first in Uruguay this September. Full press release is after the break.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 Arriving This Fall?

Sony Xperia X8.jpgOn Wednesday, Sony Ericsson announced the Xperia X8, a mid-range Android smartphone that aims to cram a lot of features into a tiny 3.89-by-2.12-inch package that is just over half an inch thick.
Based on the Android 1.6 operating system, the Xperia X8 includes all of the usual suspects such as GmMail, Google Calendar, Google Latitude, and Google Maps, as well as access to all of the applications on the Android Market. The 3.2-megapixel camera can automatically geotag your photos and upload them directly to Facebook. The NeoReader barcode scanning app is included, as is a free trial of the Wisepilot navigation service.
The phone has a 3-inch HVGA capacitive touchscreen display, and comes with a 1200 mAh battery and a stereo handsfree headset, plus a 2GB microSD card and USB charge/sync cable. If you need more space for music and video, microSD cards up to 16GB in capacity are supported.
Special additions include the four corners shortcut system, which places icons for your most-used applications on the corners of the home screen for fast one-handed access, and the TimeScape feature which intelligently organizes all of your social networking information by person instead of by source (Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
While no official announcement has been made by AT&T, the Xperia X8 is likely headed to the carrier when it is available in the U.S. later this fall, since it supports AT&T’s 850/1900 HSPA network. Pricing information is unavailable at this time, but it should be “affordable” according to Timo Maasmann, the Sony Ericsson Product Marketing Manager for the Xperia X8.

Horizon MiniPak personal fuel cell charger hits shelves for $100

We first laid our eyes and hands on Horizon’s MiniPak personal fuel cell charger back and CES and now it’s finally available for purchase. Designed for charging portable electronics on the go, the MiniPak has two refillable cartridges, each with the juice equivalent of around 1,000 AA batteries. The MiniPak — which uses Hydrogento produce the electricity — isn’t the first portable fuel cell, but it’s certainly the cheapest. Check out our demo video from CES 2010 after the break. You can hit the source link if you’re looking for a $99 fuel cell for your very own.

Who had the best E3 press conference?

There’s no debating it; E3 is the ultimate stage for major announcements and surprises, as well as disappointing letdowns. Now that the dust has settled and each of the major three console manufacturers have had their respective E3 2010 press conferences, which had the best showing? pOriginally posted at a href=”http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-21539_7-20007920-10391702.html” class=”origPostedBlog”E3 2010/a/p

pJeff’s skipped out on yesterday’s show to cover the a href=”http://reviews.cnet.com/E3/?tag=bc”press conferences at E3/a, but he’s back today and excited about the a href=”http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-21539_7-20007766-10391702.html”Nintendo 3DS/a, the first portable 3D gaming system on the scene. It might look like a DSi, but the 3DS actually has major graphical enhancements that allow for 3D gameplay, including dual lenses on the outside of the clamshell for 3D photos and a depth slider that lets you adjust the effect to your personal preference./p

pAnd, of course, a console is only as good as the games you can play on it, and an impressive list of 24 game developers are already introducing 3D titles for the handset, including new versions of Paper Mario, Starfox, and Mario Kart./i

pSony announced more details about its PlayStation Move and a a href=”http://reviews.cnet.com/E3/?tag=rb_content;overviewHead”new Gran Turismo game in 3D/a, but Jeff explains it all much better than I can, so be sure to tune in for more news from the show. pNothing ruins a soccer game faster than 40,000 fans blowing their hardest into the most annoying toy ever created: the vuvuzela. If you haven’t heard the plastic horns in action, a href=”http://vuvuzela.ytmnd.com/”click here/a, turn the volume up to 11, and you’ll experience a very subtle version of what it feels like to be in the stadium./p

pThankfully, there is a way to eliminate the irritating noise from your Samsung television. Twitter user a href=”http://twitter.com/Cliff/status/15952148816″@Cliff/a discovered that dropping the 300Hz channel and raising the adjacent levels in the equalizer can effectively tone down the vuvuzela./p

pYou can also buy an a href=”http://www.antivuvuzelafilter.com/”Anti Vuvuzela Filter/a that emits a sound on the same wavelength as the vuvuzela but with an inverted phase that cancels it out. Since a href=”http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20100614/ts_afp/safricamusicvuvuzelafblwc2010″World Cup organizers refuse to ban the horns/a, check out those options and let us know if you find a better solution./p

pWe’ve also got plenty of commentary about a title=”ATamp;T suspends iPhone 4 preorders — Wednesday, Jun 16, 2010″ href=”http://news.cnet.com/8301-31021_3-20007907-260.html”yesterday’s iPhone 4 preordering bungle/a and a hilarious story about a couple of dummies who offered to trade a href=”http://www.edibleapple.com/police-arrest-duo-for-trying-to-trade-an-ipod-touch-and-marijuana-in-exchange-for-an-ipad-via-craigslist/”a quarter of the devil’s lettuce/a and a used iPod Touch in exchange for an iPad, so check it out, and thanks for listening!/p

New Hotmail, Microsoft Office 2010 available now

Just a quick note for those of you who have yet to adopt Open Office (or have yet to give up on being productive altogether). Microsoft Office 2010 is available right now for Windows 7 / Vista / XP users. Right this instant. As you read this. It has entered “the realm of the real,” as it were. Depending on your needs and your budget, you can pick up one of various flavors: Home and Student (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote for $150), Office Home and Business (all of the above, plus Outlook for $280), or Office Professional (adds Access and Publisher for a cool $500). If that weren’t enough for you, it also looks like Hotmail (remember that?) got some massive improvements with Office Web App integration, new attachment limits up to 10 GB using SkyDrive, and more. What are you waiting for? Check out the source links to get started.

Microsoft prepping Yahoo, AIM, and Windows Live Messenger support for Kin?

The list of conspicuously missing features on Microsoft’s Kin devices is a lengthy one, but considering the target demographic, there’s at least one particularly egregious omission: instant messaging. Well-established ROM spelunker Conflipper is now reporting that Microsoft intends to add IM support in the future, though — a belief he’s presumably gleaned from looking through the latest firmware. Specifically, he mentions support for Yahoo Messenger, Windows Live Messenger, and AIM, a three-pack that would come close to covering the main services most of the Kin-owning world cares about; Google Talk would be nice, but it wouldn’t be the end of the world if Microsoft went without — especially considering that they’re starting from zilch.
