HTC Hero gets Android 2.1 update across Europe (update: nope, not 2.1 yet)

It’s been a long, painful, drawn-out process, but it looks like we’re finally closing in on getting everyone with an HTC Hero around the globe covered with Eclair. The company’s European outpost has just posted some details on its Android 2.1 over-the-air update for the 2100MHz 3G Hero sold in most of the continent (including separate builds for units in Nordic countries, Greece, and Ireland), so this should quite a lot of brewing discontent — just in time for owners to develop a raging case of Froyo envy, that is. C’est la vie; time for a Legend, right?

Update:
We’ve heard from our friends at CoolSmartPhone that this is just another minor update, amazingly — not the 2.1 build that other Hero owners are enjoying. What gives, HTC?

Update 2: And now HTC has gotten in touch with us directly, describing a two-part (the first of which seems to have already begun) end of June release. See it after the break.

Sony Divulges Prices for the PlayStation Move

PlayStation Move.jpgDuring its E3 2010 press conference on Tuesday, Sony divulged one eagerly-awaited bit of information: the price and shipping date of its Move controller.

There will actually be two Move controllers: a motion controller, and a smaller, one-handed navigation controller that will be available on the same day.

Sony said that the Move’s motion controller will be released in the U.S. for $49.99 on Sept. 19, actually ahead of the release in Japan on Oct. 21 but behind the European launch on Sept. 15. Within the U.S., Sony will sell the navigation controller for $29.99.

(How this all works together is best explained with our hands-on with
the Move technology
from earlier this year, which goes into how the
Move interacts with the PlayStation Eye camera and the other
components.)

The Move technology will be supported by at least twenty titles, including “Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition” by Capcom, “Time Crises: Razing
Storm” by Bandai Namco, “Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11” by Electronic
Arts, “Lord of the Rings: Aragorn’s Quest” by WB Games, and “EyePet,”
“Sports Champions,”  and “Kung Fu Rider” by Sony itself.

Don’t think that those are the only two Move peripherals, however. In addition, there’s a “PlayStation Move shooting attachment” for $19.99, that will place the Move in a horizontal configuration that will allow player to hold it as if he or she were holding a gun. The attachment is designed to work with games like “The Shoot! 3” by SCE and “Time Crises: Razing
Storm,” Sony said.

And then there’s the charging attachment, which can charge two Move peripherals at a time. Sony will charge $29.99 for the charger.

Naturally, Sony is offering official bundles, besides what may end up being put together by retailers. The first combines a PlayStation Move motion controller, PlayStation Eye camera, Sports
Champions Blu-ray disc game and PlayStation Move demo disc for
$99.99. Another “Sports Champion” bundle combines a PS3 system, PlayStation Move motion controller, PlayStation Eye
Camera, Sports Champions Blu-ray game and PlayStation Move game demo
disc for $399.99.

Can the 3DS answer back to the iPhone?

PlayStation Move: The games

Sony invested a generous chunk of time in laying out the fine details for the PlayStation 3’s motion control system, PlayStation Move, today. Parrot AR.Drone hits the US this September for $299, we go hands-on with video!

Parrot promised to reveal the launch details for its AR.Drone at E3 this week, and it’s now delivered — the remote-controlled quadricopter will be available in the U.S. this September for $299. Of course, this is hardly your ordinary remote-controlled quadricopter, as it’s not only controlled via WiFi, but via an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch — something we got well acquainted with both at CES and on the Engadget Show back in January. Incidentally, an Android app for the device was also recently demoed by the company, but it’s apparently still not quite official. Head on past the break for the complete press release, and hit up the gallery below for a closer look at the Drone itself in some of its various configurations.

Update: We swung by the company’s demo station outside the show floors here at E3, spoke with the company CEO, got a little more information about the post-release plans for this thing, and dive-bombed a few PR reps before running for the hills. All those details and a funky fresh new video are waiting for you after the break.

iPhone 4 is unlocked in Canada, too

Americans: gaze upon your neighbors around you if you want to see what a healthy GSM ecosystem looks like. Okay, we’re sure many of our Canadian friends would disagree that the Rogers / Bell / Telus oligopoly is anything close to “healthy,” but nonetheless, we’re still envious of the fully-unlocked option Apple is offering for all iPhones in the online store — just like the UK — along with a promise that a “reduced initial price with a contract directly from your wireless carrier” if you’re still interested in getting tied up in a contract. That’s a lot closer to the European phone sales model, and it’s a model American carriers have never even come close to touching. Now if you’ll excuse us, we need to get back to refreshing our connection to this utterly dead upgrade eligibility server.

Sony’s E3 games: A few surprises

A lot of the time was spent at Sony’s E3 2010 press conference talking about 3D gaming and PlayStation Move, but the company also made room for a few surprises. We learned about a few titles we expected to see at the big show, but we were also a bit disappointed that Sony didn’t use the opportunity to showcase titles teased last year, most notably The Last Guardian. pOriginally posted at a href=”http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-21539_7-20007820-10391702.html” class=”origPostedBlog”E3 2010/a/p

T-Mobile celebrates Father’s Day with one-day ‘every phone is free’ event

We’d heard a rumor this was coming, and T-Mobile has now made it a reality — the carrier will be offering a one-day-only, every phone is free event on June 19th to celebrate Father’s Day. Yes, that really means every phone T-Mobile offers (including the brand new myTouch 3G Slide and Garminfone) and the only “catch” is that you have to either switch to a family plan or add a new line to an existing plan — and, of course, sign a two-year agreement. The deal is only available in T-Mobile stores, however, and the carrier warns that phones will only be available “while supplies last,” so you’ll likely have to deal with a line if you’re looking to get in on the savings.
