piPhone 4 launch day is finally here! Wilson, Natali, and the rest of the a href=”http://cnettv.cnet.com/iphone-4-launch-new-york/9742-1_53-50089446.html/”CNET TV team were at the 5th Avenue flagship Apple store/a this morning to cover the release and chat with some of the Appleheads patiently waiting in line. With Wilson being the fanboy that he is, it’s no surprise that he has an actual 32GB iPhone 4 in the studio, and we all agree that it shouldn’t come within 30 yards of Jeff Bakalar’s handset-killing magnetic field./p

pAnd although a href=”http://cnettv.cnet.com/?type=nodevalue=13991″Natali Del Conte/a is already getting sick of hearing about the device, we have to address some reports that the iPhone 4 a href=”http://gizmodo.com/5571171/iphone-4-loses-reception-when-you-hold-it-by-the-antenna-band “loses reception when you hold it by the antenna band/a. /p

pEarly reviews from users are accusing the new iPhone of dropping reception bars when the outside antenna seams are covered. While dropped calls and poor reception are nothing new for the iPhone and ATT, a simple software bug could be to blame since a href=”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYlGQyylCTkfeature=player_embedded”recent updates/a show many users connecting calls despite having no reception bars. Wilson’s phone has no issues…so far./p

pThat’s enough of iPhone 4 talk on our show (for now), but if you can’t get enough be sure to head over to CNET.com and check out our iPhone 4 landing page on CNET.com for full coverage including shortage updates, carrier issues, and of course- our a class=”cnet-product” href=”http://reviews.cnet.com/smartphones/apple-iphone-4-32gb/4505-6452_7-34117595.html”official review by Senior Smartphone Editor Kent German/a.

pBelieve it or not, today’s episode of The 404 Podcast isn’t all about the “phone that shall not be named.” A new program being developed in Israel can a title=”Software might know if you’re depressed — Wednesday, Jun 23, 2010″ href=”http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-20008486-1.html”detect early signs of depression online/a. The software analyzes words, phrases, and metaphors on the Internet that could give psychological insight to people that might not even realize they have a problem./p

pOn the tech side, researchers conducted associative studies using Microsoft’s Bing search engine and the phrase “depression is like…” to determine the characteristics of depression itself, which are then reviewed by a panel of clinical psychologists to determine the verdict. The program currently has a 78% success rate in identifying depressive texts./p

pOne more thing about the iPhone 4: if you haven’t gotten yours yet, don’t bother with ATT stores- they a title=”ATamp;T delays retail sale of iPhone 4 — Tuesday, Jun 22, 2010″ href=”http://news.cnet.com/8301-30686_3-20008503-266.html”won’t get stock until Tuesday, June 29th/a. Best Buy, RadioShack, and Walmarts will probably sell out soon as well, so your best chance of procuring one today is at your local Apple store, but a title=”iPhone shortage hits NYC — Thursday, May 22, 2008″ href=”http://news.cnet.com/8301-10784_3-9950713-7.html”we’re already predicting shortages/a there too, so go soon. Like, NOW./p

NVIDIA thanks Intel for saying GPUs are ‘only’ 14 times faster than CPUs

Well, we’ve gone a full month since the last episode of NVIDIA’s and Intel’s ongoing public feud, but it looks like Intel has now stoked the flames once again (albeit inadvertently) in a paper presented at the recent International Symposium on Computer Architecture. That attempted to debunk the “100X GPU vs. CPU myth,” but it also contained the tidbit that GPUs are “only” up to 14 times faster than CPUs in running application kernels, which NVIDIA has more than a happily latched onto. In a blog post, NVIDIA’s Andy Keane says that it’s a “rare day” when a competitor states that their technology is only 14x faster, and that he can’t recall another time when he’s “seen a company promote competitive benchmarks that are an order of magnitude slower.” Of course, he then further goes on to note that Intel’s tests were done with NVIDIA’s previous generation GeForce GTX 280, and that the codes were simply run out-of-the-box without any optimization — but, still, he seems more than happy to accept this bit of “recognition.” In Intel’s defense, however, the overall finding of the paper (linked below) is that the performance gap between a GTX 280 GPU and Core i7 960 processor is actually just 2.5X “on average,” which NVIDIA hasn’t highlighted for some reason.

iPhone 4 Retina Display vs. Galaxy S Super AMOLED… fight!

If the title of this post isn’t enough to entice you, we don’t know what else to say. We’ve gone and run some sunlit comparisons between Apple’s brand spanking new phone’s Retina Display and Samsung’s equally fresh and exclusive Super AMOLED panel on the Galaxy S. We don’t know if we’ll be able to settle the argument, but we’re certainly going to subject both superphones to an expansive visual inspection. Follow us after the break for video exploration of this most pressing topic.

Nikon D90 gets custom paint job

If any of you are savvy with soldering irons, understand electrical components well, and feel like painting your camera a bright shade of pink, this might be a good weekend project.

MoviePeg Delivers a Stand-up Performance

MoviePeg.jpg

You’ve got to love the simplicity of MoviePeg. This just-announced block sells for $7.47 and works as a clip-on stand to hold your iPhone at a comfortable viewing angle in either a horizontal or vertical position. It’s made to fit the first three generations of iPhone. An iPad version will be out by the end of June and an iPhone 4 version will be available in late summer. (Really? It takes that long?)

Because the MoviePeg is mainly for video-watching, the six versions have been given movie-inspired names: Black Rain, Yellow Submarine, Soylent Green, Blue Velvet, Pretty in Pink, and Red Dawn. Not to get too picky here, but Black Rain? That’s the best you could do? Why not a violet version called Purple Rain? And I’m a little afraid of the Soylent Green version. What exactly is that one made of?

Disney: TRON Comes to Your Computer

TronKeyboard.jpg

Disney is partnering with PDP, Razer and Monster to create TRON computer peripherals, and the results are geek-tastic. As a tie-in to TRON: Legacy, out this December, Disney is releasing TRON headphones, iPod docks, ear buds, iPhone cases, and more. The line offers dark finishes, neon lighting, and a retro “cyber” aesthetic.

The TRON line will be showcased at the San Diego Comic Con next month and will reach stores in October. Monster is making the TRONheadphones and iPod dock, while Razer is making the computer peripherals. Razer’s lineup will include an ergonomic gaming mouse, a gaming keyboard, and a high-precision mouse mat. PDP will make game controllers for the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii, as well as iPod, iPhone, and iPad Tron cases.

T-Mobile USA’s Samsung Galaxy S to be called ‘Vibrant’

So, we know AT&T’s version of the Galaxy S is called the Captivate — but what about T-Mobile? Earlier rumors that it’d be called “Vibrant” are all but confirmed today thanks to a carrier-run site that’s slowly revealing a rebus puzzle… and so far, we can clearly see Sam + Sun + G and Viking – King + [unknown] + Ant. So yeah, that pretty much locks it up — and with a Super AMOLED display on board, we’d say the name fits perfectly (and TmoNews claims to have the original image anyway, where the unknown portion is Bee + R). We’re expecting some sort of US-focused Galaxy S announcement out of Sammy next Tuesday, so we imagine this’ll be it.

Apple’s iPhone 4 Launch Draws Huge Crowds Worldwide

If you thought that the hype was settling down, guess again: iPhone-hungry masses lined up outside Apple stores around the world Thursday, eager to get their hands on Apple’s latest smartphone.

“The line is longer than expected. I wish they had it more organized by time frame like they do at the genius bar,” said Robert Arnold-Kraft, a line waiter outside Apple’s downtown San Francisco store.

“My legs are already cramping up. It’s almost been two hours. This launch is bigger than a blackout sale,” said Joseph Canino, in San Francisco.

“The line here is about 2,000 people deep! Ughh,” tweeted Sandra Saldivar, in Modesto, California.

In fact, the launch of the iPhone 4 may have drawn the largest crowds ever. In New York, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Tokyo, Paris and London, thousands of would-be customers queued up, some camping out overnight, to get a chance to buy the phone.

They’ll need some luck. Apple reported receiving more than 600,000 pre-orders for the phone, in a presales rush that swamped AT&T’s and Apple’s web servers and led to countless customer complaints.

Some customers lucky enough to place their orders successfully, and smart enough to choose at-home delivery, started receiving their phones as early as Tuesday. Those who chose to pick up their pre-ordered phones at an Apple store had to wait in line today, although there are separate lines for pre-orders and for customers without pre-orders. And the unhappy few who chose to pick up their phones at an AT&T store may have to wait until next week.

If you’re in line now and don’t have a reservation, you may be looking at a long wait. Apple employees estimated a six- to seven-hour wait for nonreservation customers, according to Lun Esex, waiting in line in San Francisco.

According to some estimates, Apple may sell as many as a million iPhone 4s today, a clear record. By contrast, it took the original iPhone 74 days to hit a million, and the iPhone 3GS took a whole weekend to reach that number.

Problems have already started to crop up. Many customers are reporting that the iPhone 4 loses signal strength when you touch the lower-left corner of its external antenna band. Some customers have complained that the iPhone’s high-resolution display exhibits yellow discolorations. And Apple has said that the white version of the iPhone 4 will be unavailable for at least 3 weeks, prompting some grumbling.

Still, waiting in line is worth it for some.

“Pre-ordering your iPhone is like getting the T-shirt without going to the concert,” said iPad DJ Rana Sobhany in a tweet. “The waiting and anticipation is part of the fun.”

“I feel excited, cold and insane,” said Juliet Hoffman, who was near the front of the line in San Francisco at about 9 a.m., after waiting for three hours.

Others were less excited about the onslaught of new iPhone customers, given that AT&T’s network is already stretched to the limits.

“So *excited* to know there are about to be 500k+ more iPhone users on ATT starting today. Never thought I would be a network NIMBY,” tweeted Alexander Rose, executive director of the Long Now Foundation.
