What happened to the white iPhone 4?

It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, but Best Buy has just gotten around to confirming that it won’t have any stock of the white iPhone 4 come launch day on Thursday — the same situation that both AT&T and Apple itself are in. For many buyers, it’s not a big deal — either they don’t mind the black version, or they’d planned on buying black anyway — but for others, this is putting a significant crimp on the launch day festivities. We reached out to Apple and got this:

“There is tremendous excitement for the new iPhone 4 and we are working to get as many of them into the hands of customers as possible. At launch, we have the black models available for purchase and we will be adding the white models as quickly as we can.”

In other words, they’re not revealing much of anything — okay, scratch that, they’re not revealing anything at all about its mystery-shrouded delay, the circumstances behind it, or how long we can expect to wait. So here’s our question: what, exactly, happened to the white iPhone 4?

Tony Hawk Ride mod actually rides (video)

Face it, you’re not still using your plastic Tony Hawk Ride motion sensing game peripheral are you? So why not recoup some of your pride (and $120) by installing your own trucks and wheels and get to pushing some real pavement in the great out of doors? Or skip all that and let someone else explain to the cops that it’s not real, “it’s only a video game.” See what we mean in the video embed after the break.

Ozmo’s WiFi PAN available Q4, is this the end of Bluetooth’s reign of terror?

Has it really been two years since Intel joined forces with Ozmo Devices? Indeed it has, and we’ve been eagerly awaiting the day when our mouse, keyboard, and other peripherals would communicate via WiFi. And you know what? We’re still waiting — though we might not be for much longer. Apparently the company has just announced the availability of its low power OZMO2000 chip “to select peripheral manufacturers.” Compatible with Windows 7 SoftAP, Intel MyWi-Fi, and presumably Wi-Fi Direct, you can look for it to ship in production volumes in Q4. We know that this is great news for anyone who is frightened and confused by the tyranny of Bluetooth, to say the least. PR after the break.

Samsung Announces Cooperation with Google and Yahoo

This article was written on January 09, 2007 by CyberNet.

It’s turning into a big week for mobile phone devices, especially with the announcement of iPhone. But, that’s not all that’s going on in the land of mobile phones. Samsung has announced a cooperation with Google and Yahoo to distribute their services on mobile phones.  This comes as no surprise, with both Google and Yahoo pushing their way into the mobile market. This is a separate deal that both Yahoo and Google will benefit from.

In cooperation with Yahoo, Samsung will pre-load Yahoo services including Yahoo Go for Mobile 2.0, Yahoo oneSearch, and Yahoo Messenger.  The Samsung SGH-E570 already has launched with Yahoo search already on it.  Yahoo oneSearch will go live globally during the first quarter of this year.

Google has also gotten in with Samsung to offer pre-loaded services.  This new cooperation will allow users to access Google products and services from Samsung phones worldwide.  You’ll be able to search for information, find locations, and manage your email. This will come early in 2007 with Google search, Google Maps for Mobile, and Gmail for mobile devices all ready to go.

The first handset to offer these Google services will be the Samsung Ultra Edition 13.8 (SGH-Z720) and will include:

  • 3 megapixel camera
  • Mp3 player
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • HSDPA ready

The director of wireless products and strategy for Google, Deep Nishar says, “Google is dedicated to providing users around the world with easier access information and services when they are mobile. Working with an industry leader like Samsung is a great way to accomplish that.”

This is good news for all parties, and I’m sure we can expect to see further cooperations with other phone manufacturer’s in the future.

P2P Tracing System tracks down digital pirates

NICT have developed a scary system that allows them to track files being exchanged along peer-to-peer networks.

They first locate the supernode and from there get information about smaller node groupings. The system lets you search for files and refine movements of data down to IP address and exact time. It can even trace files that have been altered and re-sent, and ones that are exchanged from one network to another. The oldest node in the chain is the person who originally uploaded the file…and potentially committed piracy.

NICT is currently only “investigating” files being exchanged inside Japan but surely it’s simply just a matter of time before governments and corporations start using the system. You have been warned!

EVO 4G loses 30fps limit thanks to devoted community (video)

Whatever the reason HTC instituted that 30fps cap on the EVO’s graphical output, the issue has just been remedied by — surprise, surprise — coders over at xda-developers. We’ve come across video evidence of the EVO 4G rolling along at a swift 54fps average clip, and another motion picture reel shows the positive effect this has had on the touch-tracking of the handset. Check them both out after the break and hit the source to get educated on how to make this happen on your own EVO. You should be warned that there are still some issues to resolve before the whole thing’s buttery smooth, but hey, it’s still a lot better than waiting for HTC to do it.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Acer rolls out space-saving Aspire X3, M3 series desktops

Sure, you can get an eye-catching all-in-one desktop or tower, or an especially small form factor PC (or Mac), but we’re pretty sure there’s plenty of folks just looking for a simple black box. Of course, there’s not exactly any shortage of those, but Acer has now added a few more options with its new Aspire X3 and M3 series desktops, which it says are designed to be “efficient in form and function.” That means each are small, but not too small, and pack the mid-range specs you’d expect, including your choice of AMD or Intel processors (Athlon II, Phenom II, Core i3 or Pentium E6600), ATI HD 5450, NVIDIA GeForce 9200 or integrated Intel graphics, up to 1TB of storage on the X3 or 640GB on the M3 and, last but not least, an illuminated blue power button that ensures the desktop “can be found even in a dark cabinet.” Head on past the break for the complete press release, and look for the systems to be available at all the usual retailers immediately with a starting price of $449.99.

SanDisk’s 1GB WORM SD card stores evidence longer than your prison sentence (video)

You can think of SanDisk’s latest WORM SD card like a mini time capsule… for criminals. As the name implies, these write-once-read-many cards are tamperproof slivers of flash storage that can only be written to once by an SD WORM-compatible device like, say, those security cameras, witness voice recorders, and photo cameras used by the police. SanDisk claims that the data will still be readable after 100 years, long after you and your crimes have been forgotten. Why the fuss after not hearing about SanDisk’s SD WORM ambitions since 2008? Well, Sandisk just announced that Japan’s police force will use the SanDisk SD WORM card “as the storage media of choice for tamper-proof forensic image archiving.” We suspect that the Yakuza will be getting right on that “tamper-proof” claim just as soon as they finish viewing the video embedded after the break.

Bing Entertainment integrates Zune Marketplace purchases, improves Microsoft’s media swagger

Bing, Microsoft’s “decision engine,” is wading into the entertainment realm today with the revelation that searches for music, lyrics, games, TV shows, and movies will get a new special sauce treatment from here on out. You’ll now be able to play 100 basic games right in your search results, along with full-length streaming of songs (first time only, 30 seconds thereafter) from a 5 million-strong catalog. The latter is augmented with “one-click” purchases from the Zune Marketplace (directly through the web, no need to launch the app), Amazon, or iTunes music libraries. Movie tickets are promised to be similarly easy to buy, though the biggest new feature might well be the Bing.com/entertainment page, which acts as a portal into your media consumption with a selection of the most popular content in each category. It doesn’t look terribly different from the iTunes storefront, but given its partnership with Apple’s digital music shop, we doubt Bing’s Entertainment section is perceived as much of a threat — not yet, anyway. As to that other search giant, Google’s been said to already be putting together a music store of its own. Man, all this integration and interconnectedness — just where will it end?

Kinect tech destined for TV-embedded greatness in 2011, HTPC integration later this year

From Tel Aviv unknown to Xbox gaming wunderkind, PrimeSense has already had quite a run, but the camera-control tech that powers Kinect is destined for new applications before long. VP Adi Berenson tells us the company’s already signed deals to put PrimeSense inside HTPCs by the end of the year, and has at least one cable company ready to launch a gesture-controlled set top box by summer 2011. The end goal is to provide natural human control over TV-based media consumption, said Berenson, who’s working to get cameras in TVs themselves sometime late next year.

Like Kinect, these solutions will have a pair of 640 x 480 camera sensors to measure user position in 3D space, but don’t expect them to have motorized tilt functionality or voice recognition — PrimeSense said it won’t be able to make those available for manufacturers, as they’re all Microsoft ideas. The gesture recognition has reportedly evolved, though, and we’re eager to check that out soon. See what it used to look like in our GDC 2010 preview.
