Monster Debuts SuperThin HDMI Cables for Sprints HTC EVO 4G

monstercable.JPGThe HTC EVO 4G for Sprint is big for a smartphone, but small for a device that outputs HD video over an HDMI cable. So today Monster Cable showed off a “SuperThin” Micro HDMI cable that is perfect for connecting smartphones to big-screen TVs. Monster’s SuperThin cables, introduced last year, are 65 percent thinner than standard HDMI cables, measuring 3.5 mm in diameter.

Of course, the new cables will also work with the upcoming Motorola Droid X, if the Droid X’s HDMI port is a standard Micro HDMI. We’ll find out tomorrow when the Droid X launches.

Monster said the SuperThin Micro HDMI cables are so new, they couldn’t provide a release date or a price. Generic Micro HDMI cables are selling online for $12-20, and you can bet Monster’s versions will cost a lot more. SuperThin cables with standard HDMI connectors cost $79.95-119.95 when they launched last year.

iPhone 4 review

Digg this!
The iPhone 4 is no small thing to review. As most readers of Engadget are well aware, in the gadget world a new piece of Apple hardware is a major event, preceded by rumors, speculation, an over-the-top announcement, and finally days, weeks, or months of anticipation from an ever-widening fan base. The iPhone 4 is certainly no exception — in fact, it may be Apple’s most successful launch yet, despite some bumps on the road. We’ve already seen Apple and AT&T’s servers overloaded on the first day of pre-orders, the ship date for the next set of phones pushed back due to high demand, and die-hard fans in line outside of Apple locations a week before the phone is actually available. It’s a lot to live up to, and the iPhone 4 is doing its best — with features like a super-fast A4 CPU, a new front-facing camera and five megapixel shooter on the back, a completely new industrial design, and that outrageous Retina Display, no one would argue that Apple has been asleep at the wheel. So the question turns to whether or not the iPhone 4 can live up to the intense hype. Can it deliver on the promises Steve Jobs made at WWDC, and can it cement Apple’s position in the marketplace in the face of mounting competition from the likes of Google and Microsoft? We have the answers to those questions — and many more — in our full review, so read on to find out!

ATT: No iPhone 4 In Stores Until June 29

AT&T announced today that folks who didn’t pre-order their iPhone 4 devices won’t be able to get phones in stores until June 29.

Even pre-orders are in question, in fact: according to AT&T’s announcement page, “AT&T retail representatives will begin calling customers this week to let them know their iPhone 4 is available for pick up in store.” Notice the words “this week” and “begin.”

The official launch date for the iPhone 4 is Thursday, June 24, but some people who pre-ordered phones for home delivery on June 15 are starting to see them arrive early. Phones pre-ordered now will ship by July 14th, Apple says on their Web site.

Apple, however, will still have phones in retail stores on Thursday. On the official pre-order page, Apple says, “Limited iPhone quantities are available in store starting June 24.”

AT&T and Apple were overwhelmed by the pre-orders for the new iPhone 4, saying that they had processed more than 600,000 orders on the very first day of pre-ordering, June 15.

The Engadget Show returns tomorrow, June 23rd with Jimmy Fallon, Microsoft Kinect, Kudo Tsunoda, and more!

That’s right, Engadgeteers — the tables have turned. Tomorrow, June 23rd, The Engadget Show returns full force with a very special guest: Jimmy Fallon, host of NBC’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (and also a major geek). Jimmy will be sitting down with us for the kind of frank, eye-opening, and downright thrilling one-on-one conversation only The Engadget Show can provide. And there are lots of other major surprises in-store.

We’ll also have music from the inimitable Glomag, along with some stunning visuals from invaderbacca. Oh, and did we mention the crazy giveaways? Like… a pair of new Xbox 360s? Seriously, you do not want to miss this one — it’s going to be epic.

AIR for Android app turns Nexus One into slot car controller (video)

AIR for Android, a Phidgets motor control, a slot car set, and a custom built LEGO housing for good measure — if this project isn’t meant for Engadget, we don’t know what is! The premise is pretty straightforward: Grant Skinner uses his Nexus One to send accelerometer data to a desktop PC, which then sends it to a motor controller. In turn, the controller tells the cars how fast to go. Tilt forward a little bit, and the car accelerates a little bit. Lean forward a lot, and it picks up speed. Sure beats those cheesy plastic triggers we used as kids! For the interface (which is an SWF that’s sent to the handset from the host PC) our man designed a gas pedal with a series of lights that tells you how fast you’re going. Let’s just say we wouldn’t mind a setup like this for the Engadget game room. Video after the break.
