Intel’s 50Gbps Silicon Photonics Link shines a light on future computers (video)
Posted in: light, Today's Chili, videoUsing copper cables to transfer data around a computer? Get your head out of the sand, Grandpa! Intel thinks that’s on the outs and is touting its recent accomplishments with Silicon Photonics and integrated lasers, using light pulses to move data at 50Gbps (last time we heard Intel tout the tech was when it hit 40Gbps speeds in 2007). The emphasis is on low-cost, high-speed fiber optics, the removal of cable clutter, and with the speed boost, the ability to try new system designs by being able to space chips and components farther apart from one another without as much hit on speed — all theoretical at this point, of course. Researchers hopes to hit terabit per second speeds further down the line. As for John Q. Consumer, enjoy the progress from afar but don’t count on seeing this technology hit Newegg anytime soon. Video after the break.

Nissan Leaf gets early review: you might just forget its an eccentric electric car
Posted in: electric car, electric vehicle, ElectricCar, ElectricVehicle, ev, green, reviewed, Today's ChiliIt still won’t be widely available until 2012, but Nissan’s Leaf is already leaking out to a few select media outlets. Our comrades over at Autoblog managed to get behind the wheel of the all-electric whip down in San Jose, and while they didn’t find anything that changed the admittedly developing game, what they did find was a solid, refined EV that’s “ready for primetime.” They were quick to praise the design, which doesn’t scream “oddball” like some of the earlier electric automobiles. As for the ride? That was deemed “suitably smooth,” while the interior was found to be “a few degrees better than what you’d find in an economy car of similar size.” In fact, the overriding tone of the review was one of unsurprised satisfaction, with critics noting that the “gadgetry is impressive, but no more so than some of the hybrid options available from Nissan’s competitors,” and in the end, the Leaf doesn’t aim to “change the driving experience, just change the method of motivation.” Hit the source link for the full skinny.

Most iPad cases and sleeves look like what they usually are: plastic or polycarbonate shells or zipper-bound styrene and nylon containers that you use only to carry your iPad from one place to another. The DodoCase, on the other hand, is an attractively designed case that keeps your iPad safe while you carry it about but looks good at the same time. Inspired by journals and sketchbooks and handmade in San Francisco, the DodoCase borrows from bookbinding techniques to create a bamboo and faux leather shell that keeps your iPad safe and lets you use it at the same time.
The body of the DodoCase is made from bamboo and carved to give you access to the power button, volume buttons, and the dock connector and other onboard ports. The bamboo tray is then bound over with a fake leather cover with an elastic strap that slips over the tray to keep the case closed when not in use. The cover is designed so you can fold it over the back of the case and prop the iPad up at an angle to watch videos or type on it without removing it from the case. If the design and hand-crafted nature of the DodoCase appeals to you, they’re available now for $59.95, although you’ll have to wait 4 to 6 weeks while yours is made and shipped to you.
Apple Unveils the Magic Trackpad, Refreshes the iMac and Mac Pro Lineup
Posted in: Apple, imac, Mac, Today's ChiliWhen the Apple Store went down this morning, it didn’t take long for people to speculate about what we would see when the store came back online. When it did come back, Apple had quietly unveiled a new product: the Magic Trackpad, a wireless, touch-sensitive aluminum and glass trackpad that responds to multi-touch gestures and can be paired with your Mac via Bluetooth. The Magic Trackpad works both in addition to a standard mouse and as a replacement for one, and is available now for $69 USD at the Apple Store.
Apple also updated the iMac and Mac Pro lineup, beefing up both desktop systems with new processors and graphics. The iMac saw its old Intel Core 2 Duo processors replaces with Intel Core i3, i5, and i7 processors and discrete graphics from ATI. The new Core i3 iMacs start at $1199 and the Core i5 iMacs start at $1999, and the Core i7 is an upgrade option you can purchase at additional cost. The new Mac Pro is available with up to 12 cores in it thanks to Intel’s new 6-core server-class Xeon processors. Both new Macs are available with up to 512GB solid-state hard drives in them alongside or as replacements to standard physical hard drives.
Finally, if you need a display for that new 12-core Mac Pro or a second display for your Core i5 iMac, Apple also released a 27-inch LED Cinema Display for $999 that includes a 3-port powered USB 2.0 hub, built-in iSight camera, built-in speakers and microphone, and even a MagSafe connector that allows you to charge your Macbook or Macbook Pro by plugging it into the display. Dell Streak Priced at $300 For ATT
Posted in: att, price, streak, tablet, tablets, Today's ChiliAfter months of teasing, Dell’s 5-inch tablet-phone hybrid called the Streak finally has a price tag. The Streak will cost $300 with a two-year contract on AT&T. An unlocked version of the device will cost $550.
Dell is yet to announce exactly when the Streak will hit retail stores in the U.S. but it is accepting pre-sale orders from customers on its site. The device will initially be available in black with a red color variant introduced later this year, says Dell.
Dell launched the Streak in U.K. last month. The Streak is targeted at smartphone users who crave a larger display but still need a device that’s portable and could potentially replace their phone. The Streak has a 5-inch display, a 5-megapixel camera, phone, browser and access to Android apps. But it doesn’t exactly succeed in trying to be bigger than the phone but smaller than the iPad. (Read Wired.com’s review of the Dell Streak.)
A major drawback of the Streak is that it uses version 1.6 of the Android operating system, while most smartphones today run Android 2.1. Google has already released Android 2.2 Froyo and some devices such as the Nexus One have gotten the Froyo update.
The Streak seems woefully behind the times but Dell says a Froyo update is coming “later this year.”
In the U.S., AT&T haters won’t have a choice when it comes to choosing a wireless carrier for the device. Dell doesn’t plan to support T-Mobile’s 3G network or certify the Streak for operation on the T-Mobile network.
