New Version of Live Maps Released – Includes Firefox Support for 3D Mapping

This article was written on April 04, 2007 by CyberNet.

The Windows Live Maps/Virtual Earth team has spent some serious time over the last few weeks implementing new features and changes. One of their latest changes is the addition of Birds Eye Coverage around the world using their Virtual Earth service.

Yesterday they released a new version of Live Maps, and they say among the changes are bug fixes and performance improvements. Besides those changes, there’s a pretty big list of new features which they’ve posted on their blog. Below are some of the changes you’ll probably enjoy most:

  • Firefox Support for 3D mapping – If you’re using version 1.5 or later, you’ll now be able to use this feature. They’ve also added 16 new cities that will have 3D support available. Along with this change, cache performance and memory management has been improved.
  • Subscribe to collections via RSS – This new RSS feature will make it easy to keep track of changes to collections. For example, “if someone sends you a link to a collection of their favorite Italian restaurants in your city, you may want to subscribe to the collections’ feed to be kept up to date as the author adds more and more restaurants.”
  • Reviews and Ratings – This is definitely not a new concept here, but it’s nice that they implemented it.  You can read and write reviews of businesses, and rate them.
    Ratings
  • Area Calculations and Drawing Enhancements – Using drawing tools, you can draw a shape on the map (perhaps for your neighborhood, community, etc.), and then Live Maps will find the area of the shape that you drew.
    Drawing

Keep in mind that using the Virtual Earth 3D Mapping requires a quick installation and setup. It only takes a minute, and you only have to do it once.

They also say that V5 of Virtual Earth Map Control will be released soon and they’ll be introducing new features with that as well. Kudos to the Windows Live/Virtual Earth team for all of their hard work and great improvements.

Antenna-aid bandages your iPhone 4 reception issue, hopes for role in next Eminem video

Oh, Steve — you should’ve known better. You show up and remove a laptop from a manila envelope, and Earth’s most creative go and create a case fashioned out of one. You go and suggest that Eminem could “come out with a band-aid that goes over the corner” of your controversial iPhone 4, and well… this happens. You could wait for a free case, or you could buy six of these Antenna-aids for five bucks. The choice is obvious.

Sony stereoscopic screen sharing patent puts two players on one display

After that last bummer, where Sony applied for a patent “feature erosion” in game demos, we’re glad to see the company come up with something positive for the gamers among us. Two recent patent apps, titled “Stereoscopic Screen Sharing Method and Apparatus Patent” and “3D Shutter Glasses with Mode Switching Based on Orientation to Display Device,” detail the use of stereoscopic 3D technology to let two individual players see different information on the same screen (you might remember that Microsoft has also been working on something similar). Not only that, but the glasses could have earbuds — for separate audio feeds. Of course, you’d need a 3D display for this to work, and you’d need to wear those silly glasses — but that’s a small price to pay to get rid of the ol’ split screen, don’t you think? BlackBerry 6’s WebKit-based browser bests the competition in a good ‘ol standards showdown

BlackBerry 6's WebKit-based browser bests the competition in a good 'ol speed showdown

It’s been almost a year since RIM picked up Torch Mobile and locked its newly acquired division in a closet, telling those coders to not come out until BlackBerry had a world-class browser. Early tests from Salomondrin, the self-described “007 of the Phone World,” indicates that those tired engineers can now finally go home and get some sleep. The new WebKit-based browser, a part of BlackBerry OS 6.0, managed a score of 208 on the Acid HTML5 tests, measuring browser compliance and performance. Meanwhile the iPhone 4 scored 185 and HTC’s Incredible pulled down 151. Mind you, benchmark performance doesn’t always equate to real-world browser responsiveness, but regardless this is good news for CrackBerry addicts. The only question now is: when will they get their fix?

Update: The browsers were run through a suite of tests, and the above scores were actually from The HTML5 Test!

Waterfield Introduces Two New Apple Wireless Keyboard Cases

Waterfield Apple Keyboard Slip Case.jpg
Waterfield Designs has added two new cases for the Apple wireless keyboard. This should come as no surprise, considering the runaway success of the Apple iPad, which practically begs for Apple’s wireless keyboard when used as a productivity device.
The Keyboard Socket, available only in black, is very affordably priced at only $15. Weighing in at just one ounce, the pouch provides form-fitting protection for the keyboard when it is stowed inside a larger bag.
The Keyboard Slip Case (pictured above) is a lightly padded case with a ballistic nylon exterior. It weighs in at three ounces and is available in black with your choice of black, copper, flame, green, pearl, or pine trim for $29.99.
The two new cases join the existing lineup, which includes the more heavily padded Keyboard Sleeve ($39 or $42) made of neoprene and a water-resistant exterior shell. Those who need to carry a mouse and assorted accessory cables in addition to the Apple wireless keyboard should choose the Keyboard Travel Case ($49), which features multiple compartments and an exterior pocket. These two options are sold out until early August, but the company is accepting pre-orders now.

New Xbox 360 4GB ships August 3rd for $199, Kinect standalone priced at $149, bundle coming this holiday for $299

Amazon Germany just couldn’t keep a secret. Microsoft’s just announced that a shiny new Xbox 360 Arcade replacement — with 4GB internal flash memory, a matte finish, and built-in 802.11n WiFi — will be shipping August 3rd for $199.99. A stark difference in capacity to the current 250GB model, but at least it’s cheaper. Looking ahead to November, the standalone Kinect, it’s coming for (yeah, you guessed it) $149.99 with Kinect Adventures. Act surprised, Microsoft would really like you to. As for the pièce de résistance — that’d be the 4GB console, Kinect sensor, and game — that’s due out “this holiday” for $299.99. Press release after the break, pretty pictures just below.

Update: Looks like the Britons will be paying £129.99 for Kinect.
