DisplayLink aims for ‘any device, any display connectivity’ with USB 3.0

We’d heard back at Christmastime 2009 that USB 3.0-infused DisplayLink kit would be hitting shelves in 2010, and lo and behold, it looks as if someone is dead-set on keeping a promise. Here at IDF 2010, DisplayLink has come forward with public plans to gravitate towards “any device, any display connectivity” with its new USB 3.0 chip platform. The DL-3000 and DL-1000 single chip series are being introduced in San Francisco, with each offering integrated display and networking connectivity, HD video support and “third generation DisplayLink adaptive real-time compression technology that dynamically manages bandwidth, taking full advantage bi-directional throughput of SuperSpeed USB.” The gist of all that? Thanks to SuperSpeed bandwidth increases, multiple full HD videos, high resolution graphics and networking data can be processed simultaneously, and there’s even the potential to enable graphics delivery over gigabit Ethernet. Essentially, USB 3.0 has opened up an entirely new playing field for DisplayLink, and we’re hoping that 2011 is the year that we finally put those resolution caps behind us on USB-enabled docking stations. We’ll let you know if we hear more from the show floor — much to our dismay, hardly anything is said about actual product implementation dates in the PR.

Smart Finger Design Turns Your Digits into Rulers

Smart Finger Design ConceptHow many times have you said something was “this close” to something else, and held up your fingers to illustrate exactly how much distance you were referring to? With The Smart Finger, you can do that same thing and actually produce a number that’s valuable to the person you’re telling the story. The Smart Finger is a design concept from Choi Hyong-Sulk, Jung Ji-hye, and Yoo-Jin Park from Yanko Design, and works like a pair of thimbles you put on your thumb and forefinger. Then you can use your fingers to gauge distance – the amount of space between fingers is displayed on the LCD on the thimble on your forefinger.

The goal of the design is two-fold: partially to illustrate that people tend to rely on measurements that are relative to their own bodies and always have since the beginning of time, but also to give people a tool to measure small distances that people usually reference in terms of finger lengths or hand-widths. You could also put each thimble on a finger of each hand and use it to measure larger distances that way. It may be cool, but the Smart Finger is just a concept at the moment, so there’s no telling if it will ever make it to wide production.

Leaked Xbox 360 dashboard gets demonstrated on video

Digg

We’ve already gotten a brief look at the new Xbox 360 Dashboard that’s leaked out courtesy of the Kinect beta program, but now that it’s well and truly leaked across the internet, we’re getting a much better picture of what’s in store for the rest of us later this fall. As you can see above and in the pair of videos after the break, the new Dashboard is decidedly squarer than the current one, and contains few elements that haven’t gone untouched. You can also now even try out the new Dashboard yourself relatively easily, though you may run into a bit of trouble if you actually want to do thing like play games online.

Sprint debuts Sanyo Innuendo

Walmart Family Mobile enters the postpaid war, reselling service from T-Mobile

Walmart’s already firmly entrenched in the prepaid cellular business, offering handsets and service via Common Cents (Sprint) and Straight Talk (Verizon Wireless), but according to Greg Hall, vice president of merchandising at Walmart US, there’s a “perception among customers that prepaid service doesn’t offer access to the best phones or the best network quality.” In order to combat that, the outfit will be launching a new postpaid service today dubbed Walmart Family Mobile. The actual fine print is somewhat confusing, as it offers the best of both the pre- and postpaid worlds; users will still pay their monthly bill at the end of the month, but no subsidization will take place on the phones themselves due to this being a no-contract ordeal. It’ll cost $45 per month for unlimited calling and texting for the first line, and $25 per month for every extra line; unfortunately, data will be a pricey addition at $40 per month for 1GB… but at least that rolls over each month in case you don’t use it all. Initially, Wally World will offer five handsets, with the flagship phone being Motorola’s Cliq XT at $249. Frankly, we aren’t too impressed at what’s on offer here — get unlimited data bundled with calling and texting for the same $45 / month, then we’ll talk.

Update: Official PR is now after the break, and that’s a September 20th launch date, so next Monday.

Update 2: So, Walmart’s PR team contacted us to flesh out the data plan details that the AP sort of glossed over. Thankfully, the full skinny is far more attractive than what we were led to believe. In short, each line comes with 100MB of data (one-time); after you use that up, you’ve got a trio of prepaid ‘WebPak’ options to keep you going. $10 buys you an extra 200MB, $25 gets you 500MB and $40 gets you 1GB. Good stuff!

[Thanks, Ksadd]

Capcom dishes the dirt on its Nintendo 3DS graphics

According to a recent Capcom investor Q&A, it looks like the company’s upcoming Nintendo 3DS games will be developed using the MT Framework — the same game engine used for PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii titles. This means that graphics features like “HDR lighting, real-time color correction, self-shadowing, normal mapping, depth of field and motion blur” will be making their way to your handheld — whenever it should become available. Hit the source link to see several examples featuring the upcoming Resident Evil: Revelations (or, as it’s known in Japan, Biohazard: Revelations) and prepare to enter a virtual wonderworld of machine translated tech details regarding game development. You’re welcome.

Acer Liquid Metal handset confirmed for end of October in UK, has Froyo filling inside

Acer’s UK press team has been atypically loquacious today in disclosing the expected launch window and Android version for its upcoming Liquid Metal handset. We’ve confirmed ourselves that the end of October is the period now circled on Her Majesty’s calendar, though we suspect the rest of Europe, if not the entire world, will be getting to grips with the Froyo-packing smartphone at about that time as well. The unconfirmed specs (gotta keep a little mystery, right?) include the same 800MHz Qualcomm MSM7230 as inside the T-Mobile G2, a 3.6-inch display with 800 x 480 resolution, Bluetooth 3.0 onboard, and the handsome backplate you see above, which seems to have been made out of brushed aluminum. So how do you feel, is there room for yet another contender on your smartphone wishlist?

Nokia teases Swipe NFC payment system for digital receipts, warm eco-friendly feeling

Now that Nokia’s gone all-in with NFC and announced that it’ll be blanketing its entire smartphone line with the technology next year, it’s gotta do something cool with it — after all, simply turning a phone into a digital wallet is so 2009! That seems to be where Swipe comes into play, a new software stack Espoo is teasing this week that integrates NFC payments with instant digital receipt uploads to your phone — instead of getting a printed copy — which boosts your treehugger street cred by leaps and bounds. Perhaps even cooler, though, the system reads the receipt once it’s back on your phone and makes a note of the product’s return period so that it can remind you when time’s running out, perfect for getting maximum usage out of that N8 before flipping it back from whence it came. If we had to guess, this might be unveiled in full at Nokia World, which just happens to kick off tomorrow — and we’re on the scene for all the unexpectedly drama-packed action, so stay tuned. Meanwhile, follow the break for the full teaser video.
