Symbian Foundation winding down operations?

2010 hasn’t exactly been a banner year for Symbian, with Symbian^3 getting lipstick-on-a-pig reviews via the just-launched Nokia N8, top-tier supporter Samsung moving on, and chief exec Lee Williams either quitting or being shown the door. On that note, it comes as little surprise that doomsday rumors are starting to swirl — and The Register is citing a “source close to Symbian” as saying that new CEO Tim Holbrow is under orders to square things away for closure while some employees have apparently already been offered severance packages. Seeing how Sammy was one of the Foundation’s primary sponsors (along with Nokia and Sony Ericsson), it’s reasonable to believe that they’re finding themselves in a cash pinch — and now that Nokia is de-emphasizing the concept of Symbian^4 altogether, it seems like there might be little work for these guys left… especially considering that Sony Ericsson has no new Symbian products in the pipe. Putting a CFO in charge of a company is often a sign that the bottom line — not product innovation — is the priority, and realistically, there’s never been a better time for Nokia to bring things back in-house since other manufacturers have moved on and MeeGo isn’t ready for prime time just yet. Time to call Symbian dead? Far from it, but a major shake-up is starting to feel inevitable.

Greenhouses could take root at Japan’s eateries

The Chef’s Farm, as it’s called, could produce up to 60 heads of lettuce a day. If you do your math, that’s about 20,000 heads a year.

Barnes & Noble Leaks Nook Color Details

Nook_Color_mockup.jpg

Barnes & Noble is set to announce a new version of the Nook at a ‘very special event’ in New York City this week–this much we seem to know for sure. Okay, well, not for sure, for sure, but the event coincides nicely with the anniversary of the first Nook, announced roughly a year ago.

In what’s becoming something of a habit amongst tech companies, the bookseller has apparently leaked out some details about a Nook successor. The site briefly posted a product page for an screen protecting film–an accessory for the Nook Color.

There’s obviously not a lot of information about the device, at present–the information was pulled from the site pretty quickly. CNET does, however, have information from the proverbial “anonymous tipster,” who told the site that the device features a full-color tablet-like touchscreen, runs Android (like its predecessor), and is priced at $249–high for the current crop of eBook readers, but certainly well below the iPad’s starting price.

eBay Instant Sale: Recycle Old Gadgets, Get Some Cash

eBay Instant Sale.jpg

If you’re a gadget lover–and chances are if you’re reading this blog you are–then it’s likely you have a drawer or closet full of old and unused bits of technology. Cell phones, computers, game consoles, that sort of thing. Now eBay is making it easier to get rid of all of this unwanted technology with its Instant Sale program.

Users simply need to answer a few questions about the product, namely what it is and what sort of condition it’s in, and then they’ll be given a cash offer and a free shipping label. Once the item has been shipped and verified, the money will be transferred to your PayPal account. And even if the item has no value, you can still ship the item for free so that it can be recycled properly.

Happy Easter!

This article was written on March 23, 2008 by CyberNet.

To those of you who celebrate Easter, we hope you have a great one! I don’t know about where you live, but where we live, there certainly won’t be an Easter Egg Hunt outside, unless it’s in the snow. We’ve had some crazy weather this year in Chicago as I’m sure some of you have experienced elsewhere. In all this Winter, we received around 80 inches of snow and about 8 inches of that came on Friday. Ryan and I built an Easter snowman since we got dumped on with yet more snow, and here he is. Ryan is about 6 feet tall, so you can see he’s a pretty big snowman, complete with a “Happy Easter” wreath and Easter egg eyes.

Patch Watch: Fully Biodegradable And Made Of Paper

Patch.jpg

If an expensive new watch is out of your budget, you may just want to check out the Patch: the world’s first wristwatch made out of paper. Created by Altanus, the Patch costs a measly €24 and is fully biodegradable.

Designed and developed over the course of four years, the Patch weighs just 11 grams and features a simple LED display to tell time. But just because it’s made of paper doesn’t mean the watch has a short lifespan. A special coating makes the Patch both water and tear resistant, meaning this piece of paper could be strapped to your wrist for quite some time to come.

Apple Teams Up with Matt & Nat: Makes Vegan Bags

Matt&Nattjpg.jpg

The eco-fashion designers at Matt & Nat
teamed up with Apple to create its new line of vegan laptop bags. This
odd collaboration of Matt & Nat, whose mission is to create chic and
beautiful, yet environmentally responsible products, and Apple, whose
goal is to create the most powerful, user-friendly tech products (and
dominate the world?) produced some pretty sweet bags.

The “Apple” collection
consists of four bags: the Motto ($195), Creed ($210), Ritual ($180),
and Mantra ($110). Each bag is made from vegan leather with a gray suede
lining made from, on average, 21 recycled plastic bottles. The bags
have separate compartments for the 15″ or 13″ MacBook, iPod, iPhone,
iPod Shuffle, and the Motto and Creed designs even have a compartment
for the iPad.

With so many custom compartments, you can say
goodbye to digging around in the bottom of your bag for your iPod. These
spiffy bags are available through Matt & Nat or the iTunes Store, and for a price, you can own your very own trifecta bag to be green, fashionable, and Apple savvy.
