Nokia Z500 MeeGo tablet leaked on Ovi Store?

A Nokia tablet running MeeGo has been churning through the rumor mills since early summer. Speculation, however, began as soon as Nokia and Intel joined forces on the open source OS back in February. Eldar Murtazin, the ultimate Nokia insider, was first to give the Nokia tablet a name: Z500. Fast forward to yesterday, when reports first surfaced of people successfully replacing valid handset names in the store’s URL with “Z500.” Instead of being rejected as an unsupported device, the store seemingly accepted the Z500 device name as you can see in the screenshot above (the Ovi store now rejects the modified terminal ID string). Eldar had this to say on Twitter in response:

Rumour mill. As far as I know Nokia Z500 (Nokia Meego tablet) is under question. Nokia arent happy with price/features.

So now we have a name and with any luck, we’ll see a MeeGo-based Nokia tablet sometime in 2011 as followup to its Windows-based Booklet. If not, then we’ll always have the WeTab.

Samsung Galaxy Tab Goes on Sale in UK

Across the pond, lucky Europeans are waking up to the opportunity to buy Samsung’s overpriced Galaxy Tab. The Android 2.2 3G tablet is on sale today, and can be had on the 3 network at a confusion of different prices.

These tariffs come from Carphone Warehouse, as good a place as any to choose for pricing as it sells phones from all carriers. On a monthly plan, the cheapest handset price is £99 (£159) if you you sign up for two years at £40 ($64) per month. That gets you 5GB of bandwidth, which isn’t bad.

If you pay the full whack of £500 ($800) you can opt for a £10-per-month ($16) contract-free data-plan. It rolls along like any other plan, automatically renewing itself until canceled, and gives you 1GB of bandwidth to use.

Finally, the raw, no-nothing handset price is $529, or $850. That, if you’re counting, is $21 more than the most expensive iPad, with 64GB storage. To be fair, this compares the rather expensive Pound Sterling prices back to the iPad in dollars, but even in Blighty the Tab costs the same as the 16GB Wi-Fi iPad.

If anything, this head-to-head pricing will really show us if the bigger Tab can be as popular as its multi-million-selling little brother, the Galaxy Tab S. We hope so. The Tab is the first real rival to the iPad we have seen yet.

Entourage Pocket Edge ‘dualbook’ up for $399.99 Amazon pre-order

So, the dual-screen (9.7-inch E Ink and 10.1-inch LCD) Entourage Edge was too big for you, eh? That’s understandable. But what about the Pocket Edge, the self-described “world’s first mini dualbook” with a 6-inch E Ink panel and 7-inch resistive touchscreen LCD. It’s an eBook reader and 7-inch tablet all in one and it’s up for a $399.99 pre-order on Amazon right now. What could possibly go wrong?

Please Google, Bring back my Gmail

This article was written on March 01, 2007 by CyberNet.

GmailFor the last 5–hours (maybe more) my Gmail account has been inaccessible, and it is times like these that makes me worry that I could have just lost all of my emails. Sure, I have seen Gmail outages before, but when they are as extensive as this one it really makes me question the stability.

If I try and login to my account it just sits on the “Loading…” screen for awhile and eventually asks if I want to switch to the “basic” version since it is having troubles loading. I gave it a shot, but just ended up with the error seen to the right.

Ashley started a discussion in the forum asking if anyone else was having a problem, and we appeared to be the only ones. At that point I was really worried, but I went where many people turn to when Gmail goes down…the Gmail-Down Google Group. Apparently we are not the only ones with this problem, and someone offered a solution that didn’t help us:

Tried clearing all private data (incl. cookies) from browser. No idea why that should have anything to do with gmail outage but it seemed to work. Hope this helps someone.

However, there is also the more official Google Group for Gmail here, where Google reports that they are working on the issue:

Hi all,

We are aware of the issues a small sub-set of our users are experiencing when logging in and sending messages. Rest assured that our engineering team is working diligently to resolve these errors. We appreciate your patience.

Please refer back to this thread for updates as they become available.

Thanks,
Gmail Guide

I also use Google Apps to manage the email for our domain, so I decided to go and see if that still worked. Yep, it did so I am assuming that it is a specific data center that is having the troubles, and if you’re not located in that data center then you should still be able to access your account.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that my emails will comeback fully intact because I would hate to lose the emails in my account. This is probably why Gmail is still in Beta. ;)

Brand Smackdown: What a Camera Says About its Owner

Pro photographer Gordon Lewis has posted an article titled “What Your Choice of Camera Says About You” on his Shutterfinger blog. I’m usually try to steer clear of stereotypes and cheap jokes but… wait, who am I kidding? This stuff is hilarious.

Lewis has a short paragraph about most common brands. Nikon and Canon owners are exactly the same as each other, and Sony users who believe that Sony makes good cameras “also believe in astrology, UFOs and the Easter Bunny.”

It gets better: Lewis knock Pentax owners for buying expensive bodies to use old yard-sale lenses on the front, says that owning a Leica “relieves the pressure of demonstrating actual photographic prowess,” and points out that Olympus owners buy “North Korean beer, Peruvian underwear, and French cars, not because you actually like them but because no one else does.” Ouch!

Head over, and also enjoy the currently good-humored comments. If you have any other brand-baiting insults, say for Micro-Four-Thirds buffs or even those weirdos who buy Samsung and Casio cameras, leave them in the comments below. Funniest wins a hearty Gadget Lab pat on the back.

It’s out, right on schedule and it’s a biggie. The new Fall 2010 Xbox Live Dashboad update is being rolled out right now in preparation for Kinect to hit shelves on November 4th (or November 10th in Europe). The update includes Netflix search, Zune music, an ESPN entertainment hub, and much much more. Since you probably overslept anyway and don’t have time to do the update before heading into the coal mines, why not check out our in depth preview of the update from a few weeks ago. Go ahead, don’t cost nothin’. Otherwise, Major Nelson has the full breakdown in the link below.

Farewell, SL-1200: Panasonic Scratches Iconic Technics Turntable

Panasonic will discontinue its famous SL-1200 record-player after 38 years of service. The SL-1200, a favorite of DJs around the world, is fading away due to a lack of demand, and the difficulty of sourcing some analog components needed to make it.

The SL-1200, currently in its Mk6 incarnation, was never the best sounding turntable (although it was originally designed as a home hi-fi component): What it was is tough. Packed into cases to travel to gigs, or just sat in a club DJ booth soaking up abuse as nonchalantly as the DJs nostrils sucked up coke, the SL-1200 would last pretty much forever. This made the SL-1200 the turntable of choice for club-owners, and by extension every single DJ in the land knew how to use it.

Pushed out by smaller, better and often cheaper alternatives, and then by digital music (an iPod is a lot easier to carry to a gig than a record-bag, although it offers less opportunity for smuggling in drugs), the deck has been in decline for years. But should we mourn its passing?

Not really. While it was a reliable piece of kit, it never sounded very good. The inherently jittery direct-drive meant it was never destined for audiophile status, and the abuse from jobbing DJs meant that the stylus would be trashed in weeks, and not replaced for months after that.

Still, it’s a little sad to see such an icon retired, like the demise of the cassette tape and the on-again-off-again death of Polaroid film. On the plus side, you should still have no problem picking a pair up: I see various flavors of the SL-1200 in second-hand stores all the time, and they should keep working longer than you do. And if you’re a real fan, Panasonic hasn’t stopped making them just yet.

HyperMac to become HyperJuice in response to hyperactive Apple legal team

Apple legal has been abnormally busy over the last year as it engaged a who’s who of cellphone makers and government agencies. They’ve also come down hard on Sanho Corporation’s HyperMac subsidiary for using MagSafe and iPod connectors without approval. In response, HyperMac announced that it would stop selling MagSafe cables thereby rendering its HyperMac lineup useless for charging the non-removable batteries in Apple’s MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro (although they can still charge USB connected devices like the iPad and iPhone). Now Daniel Chin, President of Sanho Corporation, is informing us that they’ll be changing the HyperMac name to “HyperJuice” as part of its ongoing “comprehensive licensing negotiations” with Apple said to cover a “wide array of technologies and issues.” He also reminded us that you only have a few hours left to snag a HyperMac with the all important MagSafe cable as sales will be suspended as of midnight tonight — 00:00 US Pacific Time. Hey, with few alternatives, you might as well go down swinging selling.

Samsung Galaxy Tab on sale now in UK

While Steve Jobs doesn’t like the form factor and Google thinks that Froyo is less than ideal for tablets, we were pretty impressed by the 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab’s ability to run Android 2.2. Today it’s officially on sale in UK shops as previously announced. It’s supposed to be coming to all the major UK carriers in addition to Carphone Warehouse, Dixons, and T-Mobile shops. At the moment, we’re seeing it in stock at the Carphone Warehouse under a variety of plans ranging from a £499.99 with a £10 pay monthly plan on Talk Mobile that includes 1GB of data. On the other extreme is a £99.99 deal that requires a £40 per month two year contract that includes 5GB of data on Three. It’s also offered for a standalone price of £529.99. And please, whatever you do don’t call it a UMPC, that was so 5 years ago.

Update: We’ve just heard that Orange is also launching the Tab at similar price points, starting from £499. Similarly, Vodafone’s offering the same tablet for £499 across all of its monthly contracts. On the other hand, O2’s slapped a staggering £599 tag onto the device for all of its plans — a very odd move, we’d say (link only works within the UK).

Philips Pronto lineup of universal remote controllers to be discontinued

If you’re a home theater or home automation buff then you’re certainly familiar with Philips’ Pronto lineup of remote controls. Unfortunately, Philips has decided to discontinue its Pronto business after failing to find a buyer. Here’s the official quote:

“In December 2009, Philips announced the intention to relocate some of its existing remote control activities in Leuven, Belgium to Asia. At the same time, the intention was communicated to investigate alternative strategic options for the Pronto business, as this activity no longer fits with the Philips strategy. Following thorough research, no suitable partner was found for the acquisition of these activities. As such, Philips confirms today that it will discontinue the Pronto product line and related activities.”

Logitech, the playing field is all yours.
