Space Tourism on the Cheap, Send Your Photo Into Orbit for $4.95

zone.jpg

Who want’s to go to space!? Me too! Too bad the cost of experiencing even a few minutes of spaciness via the new breed of space tourism companies is prohibitively expensive for most of us. Thankfully, one enterprising company has a makeshift solution to sate your extraterrestrial wanderlust: send your picture into space!

And they will be able to do it for the price of a foot-long at Subway.

For a mere $4.95, Photos To Space will secure a spot for your image on board SpaceX‘s upcoming Falcon 9 rocket launch scheduled for April 12, 2011.

There is of course, a slight caveat you should be aware of. You see, sending actual photos along for the ride would be too heavy. It cost $70,000 to get a piece of cargo onto the Falcon 9 and physical photographs can add up to a few grams a piece. So, it would be way too heavy to send the thousands of photos you would need to still turn a profit. So, for now, the only way to get your face into space is to send up a digital version which will be stored on “a device” on board the rocket.

Basically, Photos to Space allows you to send your Facebook profile pic to where no profile pic has gone before.

But $4.95 doesn’t just get your photo on a flash drive stored in a rocket ship’s glove compartment (probably an exaggeration?), you will also receive a certificate and “launch image.” So, if you’re still holiday shopping for the geek in your life, this would probably make a lousy present, but a wonderful stocking stuffer.

Gmail for Android update improves Priority Inbox, adds additional compose and send options

Hey, Google just rolled out Gmail for Android 2.3.2, which improves support for Priority Inbox and adds in a couple much-needed compose and send options. Priority Inbox gets some buffed-up views and controls to change importance settings, and Gmail can now send a notification upon receipt of an important email, which is incredibly cool. Even better, the compose screen now lets you specify any sending address you’ve setup in desktop Gmail, which is a slice of pure email heaven for those of us who juggle multiple accounts from one inbox. You can also respond to messages inline now and swap between reply, reply-all, and forward much more easily. Best of all, if you’re running Froyo you can hit that QR code and go grab the update right now since Google broke Gmail out into a Market app — no need to wait for your pokey manufacturer / carrier to roll out Gingerbread. (Then again, if you’re still waiting for Froyo you might not be quite as pleased.) Ain’t modularity grand?

Buying an Apple TV or Roku? Add Blu-ray playback for just $40

With holiday discounts pushing the prices of Blu-ray players down, they’re often a better deal than streaming-video boxes like the Apple TV and Roku XDS that have fewer features.

Intel confirms Oregon plant will be ready to make 450 mm wafers

Intel’s already boasted of its massive investment in a new 22 nanometer manufacturing process, and it’s now confirmed that it’s new plant in Hillsboro, Oregon, dubbed D1X will be ready to produce 450 millimeter wafers. Of course, “ready” seems to be the keyword here — Intel will apparently stick with 300 mm wafers for a while yet, but have all the necessary preparations put in place to kick start 450 mm production when the industry is ready for it. That shift promises to both increase efficiency and cut costs by allowing more chips to be produced at a time, but it will likely still be years before we see any actual results — one analyst speculates it could be 2018 at the earliest before 450 mm fabrication tools are ready.

Daily Gift: Electronic Music Synthesizer Shirt

e1aa_electronic_music_synth_shirt_fog.jpgIf you didn’t find what you were looking for in PCMag’s roundup of the best gifts for music lovers, we found another great product that will surely make any music geek smile. The Electronic Music Synthesizer Shirt ($29.99) from ThinkGeek puts a real playable music synthesizer on your shirt. You’ll never leave home without your synth again. It’s no Moog, that’s for sure, but it allows you to play five different pro-quality sampled instruments. Also, up to eight keys can be played at once.

This is the third musical instrument shirt from ThinkGeek. There’s already an Electronic Rock Guitar Shirt, and a Drum Kit Shirt, so I guess the only thing left ThinkGeek needs to make is a bass shirt. Then you and your three friends could walk around playing music from your shirts. The shirt comes with a wearable retro-style amp box with an adjustable tone knob.

It’s perfect for the person who’s always humming tunes, and is always saying, “if I only had my keyboard here, I’d play you a jingle.” That happens, right? And in case you were wondering, the electronics are removable for easy washing. It requires 4 AAA batteries, which I assume go into the amp that clips onto your belt.

One thing I’m wondering: How does this work for women?

Want to see the shirt in action? Check out the video after the jump. There are some wonderful renditions of A-Ha’s “Take On Me,” and Europe’s classic “The Final Countdown.”

Cypress Hill backup singer sees himself in Grand Theft Auto, sues Rockstar

Our friends, this next post is fraught with danger, excitement, and West Coast rappers with names like B-Real, Sen Dog, and Michael “Shagg” Washington. Indeed, the latter is alleging that Rockstar appropriated his likeness for the character CJ, a hood in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas whose life apparently shares many details with his own troubled upbringing, “including how the teen-agers in his gang rode around on bicycles,” according to his lawyer. It seems that way back in 2003 the Cypress Hill backup singer met with reps from the game studio for a two hour interview “to talk about street life,” and the next thing you know, San Andreas is released and you have criminals riding around on bikes! Coincidence? Mr. Shagg doesn’t think so, and he’s asking for twenty-five percent of Rockstar’s profits from the game — approximately $250 million — because they’ve “stolen his image and never paid him.” Now that we think of it, isn’t there an obsessive gadget blogger in that game that looks awfully familiar? We’d better call our lawyers.

LG commits to upgrading Optimus Ones to Gingerbread, angry hordes abate

Well, we’ve got to hand it to LG for quickly doing the right thing here by keeping people informed and ultimately making the best decision for its customers. Just two days after a Facebook spat that suggested the Optimus series of midrange Android handsets wouldn’t be getting Android 2.3 Gingerbread thanks to a seemingly made-up 1GHz processor requirement, they’ve reversed the decision, saying that “all” of the models that fall under the Optimus One guise (presumably including the Vortex, Optimus T, Optimus S, Optimus M, and Optimus U) would be getting upgraded. Here’s the full statement:

“LG will upgrade all Optimus One smartphones currently using the Froyo OS to the next version of the Android OS, Gingerbread. Details of the upgrade schedule will be announced locally in due course. We sincerely apologize for the confusion and misunderstanding that was caused regarding this issue.”

Respect, LG. Respect.
