Dell ‘means business,’ schedules San Francisco event for February 8th

Sandwiched rather tightly between Sprint on the 7th and HP / Palm on the 9th, Dell just sent out an email blast that it’s planning an event out in the City by the Bay for the 8th of next month. Hard to say whether this’ll be tablets or just buttoned-up laptops and PCs, though, because the graphics starts out with “Dell Means Business” and goes on to say that they’ll be showing off “a new generation of business computing solutions.” Needless to say, we’ll be there to find out.

Playboy Hits the iPad–Is Apple Softening Stance on Adult Content?

hug_hefner.jpg

Is Apple loosening its strong anti-adult content stance? Playboy founder Hugh Hefner announced via Twitter today that his magazine’s content–all of it–will be hitting Apple’s popular tablet.

“Big news!” the robe-clad magazine magnate tweeted. “Playboy–both old & new–will be available on iPad beginning in March.” The content, Hefner confirmed in a follow up response, will be “uncensored,” including the “whole magazine from the first issue to the latest.”

Apple–particularly CEO Steve Jobs–has barred all adult content from its App Store. Last April, Jobs famously told the press, “You know, there’s a porn store for Android. You can download porn, your kids can download porn. That’s a place we don’t want to go–so we’re not going to go there.”

No word on Apple’s end whether the company will be “going there” with Playboy.

Compulab fit-PC3 offers dual-core AMD power in a case less than an inch thick

Think tablets will kill off the nettop like they’re doing with the netbook? Think again — well, for now, at least. Compulab has released details of its latest little powerhouse, and this one’s faster than ever despite being less than an inch thick and about six inches across. Maximum spec sees the insertion of an AMD G-series T56N processor, aka the Fusion Zacate, offering dual cores at 1.6GHz while pulling down 18W TDP, paired with a Radeon HD 6310, the two running cool enough to not need a single fan. (It’s the same basic setup found in the HP Pavilion dm1z we recently reviewed.) There’s up to 4GB of DDR3 memory, room for a 2.5-inch HDD, HDMI and DisplayPort connectors, a whopping six USB 2.0 ports, and even dual eSATA if you need external storage. No word on price just yet but it’s said to be “competitive” compared to its predecessors, like the PC2, which currently costs between $300 and $700 depending on configuration.

Microsoft Exec Launches Money-Scented Perfume Line

money perfume.jpg

A Microsoft executive is getting into serious Scrooge McDuck territory with this one. Patrick McCarthy, a Chicago-based VP for the software giant, has given the world a new line of perfume and cologne. It apparently smells like money.

The new, familiar scents go by the name His Money Cologne and Her Money Eau de Parfum. McCarthy believes that spraying liquid money on your body can really affect your outlook on life.

Says the executive-turned-perfumist,

I really feel that people who wear this will feel more confident. I got the idea after reading a story about a Japanese study that showed a significant increase in worker productivity when the smell of money was pumped through vents into factories.

Apparently a trip to the ATM machine also inspired McCarthy to get into the liquid smell business. The stink of cash will run you $35 a bottle online.

BulletScan Gains Wireless Uploads

BulletScanM40.jpg

iVina announced that it has enabled its BulletScan M40 mobile scanner to scan and upload color photos, business cards, and receipts to documents and photo sharing sites without any PC needed. The user simply plugs in a pre-configured Eye-Fi card into the scanner’s USB port or SD slot. To add this feature, registered M40 owners can go to www.buletscan.com, select the M40, and click on downloads to update the firmware at no charge. With this wireless feature, users can scan quickly to over 25 photo sharing and document sharing sites.

In case you haven’t heard of it, the Eye-Fi card is the first wireless memory card with built-in Wi-Fi that uses a wireless network to transfer captured images such as photos and documents. After setup, specify which networks the Eye-Fi uses to transfer images. It supports up to 32 networks. When the BulletScan M50 with the Eye-Fi card is within range of a specified network, transfers happen automatically.
