Wheego’s so-called Whip LiFe delayed, supposedly still coming soon

Wheego

We’d thought the thing were on their way, scoring EPA certification back in December and, in theory, almost ready to roll. Turns out Department of Transportation approval is taking a little longer than anticipated, and so the $32,995, 65mph, 100 mile range cars still aren’t fully road legal. The company has indicated it’s received 500 orders for the things, orders which it hopes to start shipping by the end of this month. Given how many X’s we have on our calendar this month that may prove to be optimistic as well, but still probably more realistic than your chances of getting a Leaf this year.

Woz “Frightened” By Jobs Leave

steve-jobs-Steve-wozniak.jpg

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak responded to Steve Jobs’s sudden leave from Apple this week in an e-mail, stating, “The news actually frightened me because I did not expect it.”

Jobs over the long weekend issued a release stating that he would be going on leave for an unspecified medical reason, fueling speculation in the media that his pancreatic cancer had returned. The day-to-day running of the company has fallen on Apple COO Tim Cook, who has filled in for Jobs during past medical leaves–and is largely expected to become the company’s next CEO.

Woz said that he had yet to actually reach out to his Apple co-founder, but added that he supports Jobs’s decision. “If Steve is tired and wants a bit more normal life,” Woz said, “more power to him.”

Wozniak and Jobs co-founded Apple Computers with Ronald Wayne in 1976. Wozniak exited the company in 1987, but is still an Apple shareholder–and proud user of Apple products.

Nanoscale ropes braid themselves, tiny sailors still needed to tie tiny knots

Nanoscale ropes braid themselves, tiny sailors needed to tie tiny knots

While perhaps not being quite as useful as towels, ropes are might handy things to have. With them you can attach things to other things and, well, that’s really their primary use. But what if those things are small? Really small. You need nanoropes of the sort created at the Molecular Foundry, braids that measure just 600 nanometers in diameter. A sheet of paper? About 100,000 nanometers thick. Perhaps even more interesting than their scale is how they were constructed, formed of polypeptoids that self-assemble into the coiling double helix you see above. Possible uses? Right now this is a part of experiments to create more complex nanoscale structures, but we could totally see them being used to, you know, tie tiny things together.

Nintendo 3DS Release Info Revealed

3dshandsonfull.JPG

Nintendo held a press conference in New York today to detail info about its much discussed upcoming portable gaming console, the 3DS. The company’s North American president, Reggie Fils-Aime, took the stage to shed some light on the still semi-mysterious device, including, release date and price: the 3DS will bit hitting our shores on March 27th, priced at $249.99.

At launch, the device will be available in blue and black (though, knowing Nintendo, a number of other options will be available in the near future). March 27th will see a number of titles released for the console. Nintendo itself will be offering Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, Pilot Wings Resort, Nintendogs and Cats, Kid Icarus Uprising (the title announced at the device’s unveiling, back in June), and Steel Diver.

Third party titles include Super Street Fighter IV 3D, Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars, Madden Football, Dead or Alive Dimensions, and Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D. In all, 30 titles will be offered between launch and E3 2011.

The system itself comes pre-loaded with Mii Maker, an Internet browser, a pedometer (Nintendo is really pushing the whole “get out of the house” thing), and Nintendo 3DS Sound audio software.

after the jump, check out some videos from Gearlog’s hands-on time with the device at CES the other week.

T-Mobile intros DriveSmart Plus service to block texting while driving, FamilyWhere to track down your kids

The texting-while-driving epidemic is starting to get a lot of carrier attention, and T-Mobile’s taking it to the next level today by throwing its weight behind a new subscription-based upgrade to the DriveSmart app that’s been available on the LG Optimus T since launch. DriveSmart Plus runs $4.99 a month for all lines on your account (provided the lines are attached to compatible devices) and upgrades the basic DriveSmart app by automatically detecting when your car’s in motion — no need to enable it by hand — at which point incoming calls are automatically sent to voicemail and incoming text messages are met with an automatic response that the recipient is currently driving. Naturally, there’s an emergency override built-in — but to make sure young drivers aren’t abusing it, DriveSmart offers parents the option of being contacted by text or email when it’s overridden and can let them monitor overall phone usage through a web interface. The service is only available on the Optimus T initially, but more hardware support is “coming soon.”

On a related note, T-Mobile is also introducing FamilyWhere, matching similar services already offered by Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint by letting parents see where their young’uns are and set up customized alerts by location and time; it’s apparently compatible with “nearly any type” of phone on the T-Mobile network, so you shouldn’t need to equip the tykes with superphones just to get this action set up. It runs $9.99 a month and covers all the lines on your account; follow the break for both press releases.

Samsung announces five ultracompact cameras

With one exception, the cameras are as exciting as that headline.

HP / Palm tablet to feature Touchstone dock, cloud storage, Beats audio and Tap-to-Share smartphone integration

Now that the kitty’s out of the gemstone bag, we’re slowly starting to connect the dots that obscure the details of Palm’s soon to be announced “Topaz” and “Opal” tablets. First up is information from one of our original trusted sources who claims that the Opal will measure 180 x 144 x 13mm (making it a bit shorter and wider than the 190.1 x 120.5 x 12-mm Galaxy Tab) and feature a 1,024 x 768 pixel TFT LCD display. We’re told that the bigger Topaz tablet will ship about three months before Opal and measures in at 241 x 190 x 13mm (making it nearly identical to the 242.8 x 189.7 x 13.4-mm iPad) with a pixel resolution that could be the same as the Opal (our source wasn’t 100 percent on this). We’re also hearing that the “premium audio” we saw on that leaked marketing slide will indeed be powered by HP’s Beats audio processing, and that the tablets will be provided with “tens of gigabytes” of cloud storage — so much that it dwarfs the local storage on the devices. Good, because you’re going to need it from the looks of some additional information we just received. Click through for the detail.

Pay for Coffee Nationwide With Your iPhone, Blackberry

Visit a Starbucks and you can now forget about cash or cards: Just flash your phone to pay.

Starting today, iPhone, iPod Touch and Blackberry users will be able to pay for coffee and coffee-themed products in 6,800 of Starbucks’ own stores and in 1,000 Starbucks outlets in Target stores. The scheme has been tested since last year in a handful of stores, and is now available nationwide.

The app doesn’t bother with complex in-store machinery or NFC or RFID chips in the phones, for obvious reasons. (Sorry, Nexus S users.) Instead, you just tap the number of your Starbucks Card into a free app and load the app up with funds from either your credit card or, for iPhone users, PayPal. When you’re ready to pay, your phone displays a QR code on screen, and the barista can scan it using a standard reader.

In effect, it makes your smartphone into a virtual version of your Starbucks card, saving you from carrying around another piece of plastic and giving you the ability to see your balance and add funds as necessary.

Apart from convenience to you, the customer, using a phone to pay should speed up the lines in-store. Especially as most of the people in front of me are already jabbering on their phones instead of actually paying any attention to the staff at the counter. Then again, maybe hunting for the Starbucks icon on your home screen will becom the new hunting for change in your wallet.

Super Street Fighter IV for 3DS Trailer, Images Revealed

ssfiv3d_logosmall_noaevent_jan19th.jpg
Excitement is beginning to mount for the Nintendo 3DS. The device isn’t due out in North America until late-March (though it’s actually hitting store shelves in Japan a month earlier than that), but thanks to a big press conference today in New York City, it’s quickly becoming a post-CES focal point for much of the tech community (at least until Sony releases all of those portable gaming devices we’ve been promised).
Capcom has joined in on the buzz by detailing some information about titles for the upcoming device, including Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D and Super Street Fighter IV. The latest in the popular fighting series features a Wi-Fi multiplayer mode, 25 playable characters, and customizable controls.
The company hasn’t actually offered a release date or price for the title, but we’ve got images galore and a brand new trailer. Check out both, after the jump.

USB Rechargeable Batteries

This article was written on September 21, 2006 by CyberNet.

USB Cell

These 1300mAh USB Cell batteries aren’t your the typical batteries that you would pick up at the gas station. Instead, you can plug these directly into your computer’s USB ports in order to give them a charge.

Unfortunately it will take you around 5 hours just to get these things up to a 90% charge, which seems a little long to me. Get yourself a USB hub and you can have yourself a nice little charging station.

UK Price: £12.99
