SPOT Connect Makes Your Smartphone a Satellite Communicator

SPOT Connect

A long time ago we looked at the SPOT Satellite Messenger, a product designed to help people stay safe and in-touch with friends and loved ones if they were camping, off-roading, or traveling somewhere cellular signal or wireless Internet access weren’t necessarily available.
The SPOT Messenger allowed you to “check in” at a GPS location via the SPOT satellite network, and have your location and a short message posted to the service or sent directly to friends and family so they knew you were okay.
At CES this year, SPOT unveiled the SPOT Connect, a smartphone peripheral that pairs with your phone and gives you the same ability, even if you have no cellular signal. You simply download the SPOT app, pair the phone with the SPOT Connect device, and you can send short e-mail, SMS messages, even Twitter and Facebook updates via SPOT’s satellite network.
If there’s an emergency and you need to call for help, just press the SOS button and police and medical authorities in your vicinity will be notified, complete with your GPS coordinates so they can find you quickly. The SPOT Connect will be available later this year, although no specific release date was announced. It’ll set you back $169.99 retail, plus the cost of a SPOT subscription.

NZXT Bunker Protects Your USB Devices

USB Bunker

Afraid someone is going to run off with your mouse or keyboard, or perhaps that someone will find an unused USB port and plug in a keylogger? NZXT’s new USB Bunker is designed to give you a bunch of USB ports that are completely locked down and protected, and not using some fancy software – we mean lock and key.
You’ll need an expansion bay in your desktop computer to install the bunker into, but once it’s in, you can swing it open to plug in your USB devices, and then shut the door over those devices to keep the USB cable in its port and in place so no one can snatch it.
If you have a desktop computer and want to make sure no one has access to your precious USB ports, the USB Bunker can be yours for $24.99 retail price and will be available in March.

Aigo A8 / Leo 14 megapixel cameraphone hands-on (video)

We were wandering the floor at CES just before the end of the show when we stumbled upon this oddly familiar device. It’s the Aigo A8 — née Altek Leo — an Android cameraphone (more like a phonecamera, really) destined for China Unicom that sports a 14 megapixel autofocus camera with a CCD sensor, xenon flash, 3x optical zoom, and support for 720p HD video recording. Of course, we wasted no time taking this rare beast for a spin, even going so far as to sample the camera. Take a look at the pictures below, followed by more information — and videos — after the break.

White iPhone Vanishes from Verizon’s Site

Well, that didn’t take long. Roughly an hour or two ago we wondered out loud whether Verizon was getting first dibs on the elusive white iPhone 4. After all, the thing did appear on Verizon’s site.
As we suspected at the time, however, the thing seems to have accidentally been carried over from Apple’s own product page. The image of the white iPhone has since been removed from the page. As you can see from the above and after shots, the spacing of the black iPhone is the same–Verizon seems to have simply deleted the white iPhone from the image.
The latest from Apple has the white version of the popular handset finally hitting the market after months and months of delays. Looks like Verizon customers will have to wait, too.

Helpful Tip: Track UPS and FedEx Packages via Email

This article was written on June 16, 2008 by CyberNet.

track ups fedex packages.png

We don’t know why shipment tracking services are so intriguing lately, but they are. Maybe it’s because we’ve had a handful of packages shipping (selling on eBay) and being delivered lately. Last week we wrote about how you can use Twitter to track your UPS, FedEx, USPS, and DHL shipments, so now today we’re going to explain how to track your UPS or FedEx packages via email instantly, while on the go. It’s actually pretty simple.

All you’ll need is the tracking number, and then you’ll need the following email addresses:

  • track@fedex.com
  • totaltrack@ups.com

With your tracking number in hand, go to compose a new email. Leave the subject line blank, address it to whichever service is delivering (or shipping) your package (either FedEx or UPS), and then put the tracking number of the package in the body of the message and send it. Within seconds of sending the message, you’ll receive a reply with the status of your shipment. It’s really as simple as that!

Now some of you are thinking to yourself that you can just go to either FedEx or UPS, and enter your tracking number to get updates, so how is this useful? This will probably be most useful for those of you who are away from your computer, but have a mobile phone with the Internet enabled and want an update.

CDMA iPad coming to Verizon, too, says CFO

It’s not just the iPhone 4 that’s going the way of CDMA. Verizon CFO Francis Shammo has told Bloomberg that the iPad will also be getting similar treatment. Although light on details like price (which we can guess) or release date (which we have no idea, really), Shammo did explicitly say a version that connects directly to Verizon’s network is in the pipeline. We assume he meant the current iPad, which the carrier currently sells as WiFi-only with a MiFi bundle, but hey, anything’s possible.

McIntosh MCLK12 wall clock sports fancy face, massive price tag

Ever wonder why you can’t find a clock that looks more like a 1970s amplifier? If you answered yes to that question, and don’t mind throwing down wads of cash for novelty timepieces, then McIntosh’s MCLK12 is right up your alley. The makers of high-end audio gear have produced a clock that’s in keeping with their classic look and price point — it costs $2000 and uses blue-lit amp meters to tell the time (hours on the left, minutes on the right). We have to admit, the MCLK12 looks pretty sweet, but really, whatever happened to promotional t-shirts?

20 Uses for Your Old AT&T iPhone

Thumbnail image for iphone 4 flat.jpg

After years of rumor and speculation, the Verizon iPhone finally became a reality today. That no doubt means that Verizon customers will renew their contracts by the boatload. The news also likely means that plenty of existing AT&T customers will be abandoning their contracts, in search of better service.

So, once you’ve dumped your AT&T contract and tossed away a few hundred bucks, what to do with your newly bricked iPhone? Well, you could get a few bucks from a reseller, or you could ship it to an electronics recycler.

Boring.

I asked the PCMag staff to come up with a few suggestions for your otherwise unusable handsets.

Blunder: Verizon pulls white-iPhone pic

We didn’t dream that Verizon advertised the white iPhone on its site this morning, but Big Red has erased the evidence.
