Engadget interviews 50 Cent: inside the mind of a hip-hop mogul techie

50 Cent has a tendency to do things big, so it makes sense that he’d use CES as a platform to launch his new line of headphones in collaboration with Sleek Audio. Luckily for us, he’s been hanging out in the back of a Gunnar Optiks RV (he’s an investor) that just so happens to be parked right next to the Engadget Trailer. 50’s been making the rounds with the press here shopping his latest offerings, but we still jumped at the chance to shoot the breeze with a man who’s been shot nine times — and he turns out to be a pretty nice guy. Get a look into the mind of 50 Cent in our interview after the break, including information on 50’s secret “batphone” — for the ladies only, of course.

TARDIS iPhone Dock Pumps Out Transdimensional Tunes

LAS VEGAS — Speakal has created a dock for your iOS devices in the shape of the iconic TARDIS from Doctor Who. The bottom of the box slides out like a tray, revealing a small docking station. Speakers are built into the windows, and there’s a volume knob in the back.

CES 2011The company has also created an iOS app that turns your iPhone or iPod into a wireless remote control for your home theater, controlling the TV, stereo and DVD or Blu-ray player. The free app connects to the TARDIS via Bluetooth, and the commands are beamed to your various home theater devices using a small infrared emitter in the lamp at the top of the TARDIS.

It will be available this spring for around $130, and it will be slightly smaller than this demo unit (It’s actually bigger on the inside than it is on the outside).

Speakal has a few other official BBC-licensed products, including a dock shaped like Stig’s helmet from Top Gear. Your iPhone plugs into the top, which looks kind of silly, but it’s still a wicked cool piece of art.

Karotz: The New Nabaztag

karotz.JPG

I actually said “oh, Nabaztag!” outloud when I approached the company’s booth. But alas, it was no Nabaztag. It was something called “Karotz.” After a little confusion, I realized that, for all intents and purposes, Nabaztag and Karotz are one in the same. The little ambient rabbit was actually renamed after its maker went bankrupt.
Karotz is a little light up bunny that can be connected to your RSS feeds, Facebook, Twitter, and more. The bunny also sports voice and facial recognition. Inside, you get 256MB of storage, 64MB of RAM, and a 400MHz ARM processor.
He’s hitting our shores next month, for somewhere in the neighborhood of $200.

Turtle Beach Earforce PX5 gaming headset preview

On the show floor of CES the madness is virtually endless. But lucky for us, within the sea of rabid gadget lovers and enthusiasts we came across Turtle Beach’s booth and got our greasy In-n-Out Burger fingers on the just-announced Earforce PX5. Not only did we get to wear the headphones and feast our eyes on the wireless hub, we experienced Dolby 7.1 surround sound while playing Halo: Reach on the Xbox 360. We’ve got pics and our initial impressions after the break, so hit it!

Azpen Tablet Dual Boots Android, Win 7

azpen tablet.JPG

I know what you’re saying–another tablet? I know, I know. But this one’s different–at least in one cool way. Azpen’s X1 10 inch tablet doesn’t make you pick between mobile operating systems–the tablet boots both. “Work hard, play hard,” as the company puts it.
The tablet features an Intel N455 1.66GHz processor, 802.11b/g, two USB slots, and microSD slot–not particularly impressive, but we did mention the dual boot thing, right? The X1 comes in 8-, 16-, and 32GB configurations.
The company also makes dual booting 9.7 and eight inch tablets.

iriver Story HD e-reader preview (video)

Our trailer was just visited by an iriver rep bearing his company’s Kindle killer in waiting, the Story HD. This 6-inch e-reader touts a bodacious 1024 x 768 resolution, which contributes to an even better contrast ratio than on Amazon’s E Ink slate, while software optimizations between now and release are expected to make the Story HD the fastest-refreshing device of its kind. The display itself is built by LG Display and is accompanied by a Freescale Cortex A8 CPU, 2GB of onboard storage, and an SDHC card-reading slot. Sun rays are, as expected, absolutely no problem and we have to admit that on first sight we thought the device had a sticker affixed to its front — its that good at reproducing printed materials. Physically, it seems to have been constructed with the third-gen Kindle as its dimensional blueprint, albeit with quite a different control scheme. The hand-built proto unit we played with wasn’t really ready to have its ergonomics judged properly, but iriver has plenty of time until the expected May launch to iron out any kinks. Content distribution partnerships have already been sewn up for the US, so now it’s just a matter of patience until we get our e-reading on in gorgeous XGA resolution. Video hands-on after the break.

Chrysler and Mopar get in on the smartphone app game, do it for free this Month

Chrysler and Mopar get in on the smartphone app game, do it for free this Month

Yes, it’s another app from another auto manufacturer. This time it’s Chrysler and Mopar working together to release information apps for Android, BlackBerry, and iOS — though only Android is coming soon, sometime before the end of January. You won’t get any fancy remote climate-change like with the Leaf or door unlocking like you can do with OnStar or the upcoming MyFord Mobile. In fact, you can’t really do much of anything with the car, taking the Hyundai Equus route by simply aggregating information and videos about the owner’s car, plus also giving the ability to check warranty info and the number of your local garage. Initial availability is for this year’s Chrysler 200, Town & Country, and the Chrysler 300. Really, it doesn’t get much more exciting than that.

Kitara: The Electric Guitar Goes Digital

kitara.JPG

Kitara’s tagline is “no strings attached.” It’s a strange new instrument that was drawing a big crowd in the North Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center today. It’s a big plastic thing, shaped like a guitar with no head. There are little touch points (six per fret, corresponding to where the strings usually sit) all along the neck and an eight inch LCD in the body.
The guitar comes loaded with hundreds of sounds, which the player can edit, manipulate, and combine–there are millions of sounds, according to the instrument’s manufacturer–you can also output MIDI sounds on the device.
Pretty neat.
