LaCie Intros Luxury Flash Drive

Galet.jpg

With the price of flash drives falling, here’s an idea: let’s think of a way to pay more for them. LaCie has partnered with Christofle to produce Galet, a flash drive with a pebble shape and a silver plating. It’s a conversation piece and a thing of beauty. Oh, and it can also store files. It comes with 4GB of storage.

Each piece is hand-crafted in France and individually plated with silver using Christofle’s 150-year-old silvering process. Then, each one is inspected for a smooth finish and radiant polish. It comes packed in a gift box at the factory in Paris. You’ll even get some software with your purchase: each Galet includes LaCie’s Private-Public software with password protection. Are you charmed yet? If so, scrape up $130 and visit the LaCie Web site.

Flaming Lips Reissue Album on Cell Phone

Flaming-Lips-scream.jpg

Spin calls the reissue of the Flaming Lips’ 1997 album Zaireekaunconventional.” My question, however, is: if nothing the Lips do is conventional, shouldn’t the unconventional be the unconventional?

I mean, consider the original release of Zaireeka–the album was a four-disc set with all four intended to be played on different CD players at the same time. I tried to listen to the record with a group of friends in college once, but given the different start rates of players, it was nearly impossible to sync the things up, despite the ample syncing tones at the beginning.

Perhaps this reissue will make matters easier. The band is re-releasing the record on cell phones. Says lead singer Wayne Coyne, “We’re trying to get together as many people with phones to cram into a bathroom and play it. It’ll be a cool experience.”

The record is arriving in the next week or so, so you’ve got that long to find three friends as dorky as you to try it out. The test starts now.

Tesla confirms plans to unveil electric Model X SUV this year, $30k car by 2015

Tesla confirms plans to unveil electric Model X SUV this year, $30k car by 2015

We’ve known for some time that Tesla hoped to use the underpinnings of the luscious Model S as a base platform upon which other cars would be built, even minivans. Elon Musk in the past has mentioned a Model X SUV due sometime in 2014 and he’s just re-confirmed that we’ll be getting our first glimpse of the thing sometime this year. Few further details are known but we wouldn’t be surprised if it shared some components with the Tesla-powered Toyota RAV4 EV. Musk also took the opportunity to re-confirm that a genuinely affordable electric Tesla is coming by 2015, something priced under $30,000 and, while probably not quite as bodacious as either the Roadster or the Model S, hopefully it’ll be a bit more invigorating than the Leaf.

iChair Gives your iPad or iPhone a Boost

iChair.jpg

Looking for a case for your Apple portable? Consider the iChair, a slim case with a built in kickstand. iChairs have a rubber-coated matte finish. Because the kickstands are flush with the case when not in use, they don’t add any extra bulk. The iPad version is lined with microfiber and has two kickstands: one that holds it up high at three different angles, and one that holds it lower, just right for typing.

The case is available in black with your choice of an extra top slider case in either blue or white. All models come with a screen protector, cleaning cloth, and squeegee board for pushing out any bubbles when you apply the screen protector. In fact, the iPhone 4 case comes with front and back screen protectors. The iPad version lists for $49, while the iPhone 4, iPhone 3G/3GS, and iPod Touch versions list for $34. Not convinced? You’ll also get free shipping in the continental U.S.

Friday Poll: Do you feel screwed over by Apple?

A bit of a brouhaha has bubbled up over Apple adding tamper-resistant screws to iPhones and MacBooks. Do you support what Apple did or do you think it’s bad consumer business?

Soft Screwdriver Combines Tool and Bag

Arthur Xin’s Soft Screwdriver is a clever combination of tool-roll and multi-tip screwdriver. Like a bullet-belt, the soft case has tubes to stow seven screwdriver shafts, plus one larger tube with a metal handle into which you slip any of these shafts.

Then you just roll up the bag and it wraps around the central section to form a big, easy-to-grip handle.

It’s a concept design, and as such could do with a little more work. In particular, chirality seems to have been somewhat overlooked, which is a problem in a screwdriver. First, the handle would tighten itself in one direction and loosen in the other, meaning constant re-wrapping when swapping between screwing and unscrewing.

Worse is the method of tip-attachment: the various shafts actually screw into the master handle-tube, again giving one-way screwing.

These could be easily fixed with a Velcro tab on the roll-end and a bayonet fixing in the handle, making this a very practical multi-tool. And hey, maybe they could include a screwdriver to open up Apple’s evil iScrews?

Record number of aircraft ‘laser events’ gives us one more reason to hate LA

Are you that kid aiming his father’s laser pointer at people walking along city sidewalks? Yeah, well stop it — now. What you might consider a harmless prank can have serious repercussions when aimed at the cockpit of an approaching jetliner. What seems like good fun at the time can temporarily blind a pilot attempting to land nearly a million pounds of life, metal, and fuel. According to the numbers just released by the FAA, 2010 saw a record number of reports of lasers pointed at aircraft — “almost double” the number of reports from 2009. Of the 2,800 incidents reported nationwide, the Los Angeles area reported the most with 201 incidents, followed by Chicago (98), Phoenix (80, half of which were probably UFO related), and San Jose (80 — nerds!). Top 20 list after the break.

Can an SF start-up help hail a cab in NY?

Uber, a mobile limousine-booking service, has become a favorite among in-the-know techies in San Francisco. Launching its service in New York, where taxis are heavily regulated and easy to find already, may prove more complicated.

Meguru is the world's first EV rickshaw it didn't know it needed

If you’ve never experience the thrill that is fearing for your life while some crazy rickshaw jockey takes you tearing through a busy street, two-stroke engine screaming even louder than you, you haven’t really lived. Soon there’ll be no 175cc engine to drown out your lamentations, with the Meguru offering all that thrill and style with an EV powertrain. It has a traditional Japanese design with motorcycle-derived innards but a cushy (and tackily upholstered) back seat for two — or maybe three depending on how friendly everyone is. The side curtains are made of bamboo and washi paper, giving it a look that says “I’m at least partially organic.” It’s available now for a mere ¥100,000; about $1,200.

Update: A little further Googling has found a number of prior permutations for gas-free rickshaws, including a solar model, making us think the “world’s first” claim here is perhaps a little dubious — as it often is. Still, we’ll give it world’s first mass produced EV rickshaw.

Even Cows Get the Blues: Whipping Post Leather Guitar Case

Guitarists: How much did you pay for your instrument? If it was less than $825, then look away now, because this gorgeous leather case costs more than your guitar.

The case is called the Arizona Arena and comes from the Whipping Post Leather company, a name which neatly evokes the brutal flaying required to skin a dead cow. And unlike its bovine donor (or even your guitar), the case looks like it would last forever, sewn with “marine grade threading” and equipped with stainless steel buckles and loops. It does in fact come with a lifetime warranty.

Inside there is one-inch thick foam padding and outside you get pockets for stowing a pint of bourbon and anything else the modern guitarist might need. There is also a strap which does double-duty as a shoulder-strap or backpack-strap.

The picture above shows the Arizona Arena, and you can also go for the darker Georgia Brown or the pale tan Mojave Sand for the same high, high price.
