The 404 762: Where we’re picking up the pieces (podcast)

Happy birthday, Lou!

Jeff’s dad, aka Sweet Lou Bakalar, is celebrating a birthday today, but unfortunately he can’t be live on the show to go through his 10-item birthday wish list with us so we’ll have to settle on a 10-minute voice mail instead. Lou’s back, and he’s cracking down on cyclists!

We’ll play his voice mail right after the break, but before that we want to talk about two Facebook apps that plan to ruin (or strengthen!) as many relationships as they can. First up is a service called Breakup Notifier that automatically sends you an e-mail when your crush breaks up with his or her significant other, giving you the opportunity to turn your lurk into love.

There’s also Social Harpoon, an anonymous “hot or not”-style ranking system just for your Facebook friends. The app shows you two friends and judges rating percentages based on the elo rating system to show how likely each person is to “win” against you.

A school district close to my home town in Anaheim, Calif., is testing a GPS tracking device for habitually truant students. To stop kids from ditching, administrators and parents are agreeing to assign GPS hardware to students along with a tracking code that must be entered five times each day. We’re not sure this will work, though–can’t these truants just pay some hall monitor to babysit the device and check in for them?

Amazon has announced an improved feature for Prime, the $79 dollar a year service that gives customers free two-day shipping on all orders shipped from Amazon. For no additional cost, Prime customers will now get access to more than 5,000 streaming TV shows and movies on top of their free shipping options, with titles like “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” “Amadeus,” and even “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.”

We’ll end today’s show with our Deal of the Day. For the next month we’ll be alerting you to great online deals for tech products brought to you by our sponsor Kodak, and today’s deal is a 47-inch LG LCD TV
for $600 with free shipping. Check it out!

Happy birthday again to Sweet Lou, and thanks to Doug from PA for being super high in his video voice mail and coining a new 404ism, tag er easy!

Nintendo Launch Titles: A History

Super_Mario_Bros_cart.jpg

Earlier today, Nintendo finally unveiled the launch titles for its eagerly awaited upcoming portable, the 3DS. When it launches on March 27th, 18 titles will be hitting the market. There are a number of familiar titles on the list, including Street  Fighter, The Sims, Madden, and Pilot Wings.
In honor of the announcement, we’ve taken a quick look at past Nintendo console launches, from the NES up through the Wii. A few interesting tidbits: The NES, like the 3DS, launched with 18 titles. Both are tied for second place for number of games after the Wii, which launched with 21. The Nintendo 64, meanwhile, had the fewest games, only launching with two, when it was released in 1996.
The 3DS is one of the few titles to launch without a Mario game (the other three are the Gameboy Color, Gamecube, and Wii.

Samsung creates first full-color quantum dot display, threatens to make Dippin’ Dots obsolete

Samsung creates first full-color quantum dot display, threatens to make Dippin' Dots obsoleteWe haven’t been serving up quantum dots news for quite as long as we’ve been regaling you with tales of quantum computers, which is just as good because we’re about to tell you the technology is still at least three years away from showing up in something you can buy. But, it is getting closer, with Samsung demonstrating a four-inch quantum dot display with full color. Quantum dots are nanocrystals that emit light when they get excited, perhaps on Christmas morning or when waiting for the list of school cancellations on a snowy morn. The size of the crystal dictates the wavelength of light emitted, and by laying precise grids of different sized crystals Samsung creates RGB pixels of the sort needed to make a display. Pixels can be applied directly to glass or to a flexible surface, and in theory they’ll be far more efficient than an LCD while brighter and longer-lasting than OLED. Right now, however, they don’t achieve any of those benchmarks, which is unfortunately where we circle back to the whole “three years away” thing.

Xbox 360 Slowly Gains On Nintendo Wii

xbox-360.jpgMicrosoft Xbox 360 may finally be able to beat the Nintendo Wii. While Wii sales have slowed down, the console has been a top seller for some time now, thanks to the unique games, low prices, and the endless supply accessories. Now the Xbox 360 is looking to take over, thanks in large part to the success of the Kinect.

Since Microsoft has released the the peripheral, sales for the console has risen. Between the hit game series like Halo, and, Call of Duty the sales for the Xbox 360 have started to compete with the Wii at last.

It is about time that Microsoft can finally beat with Nintendo. It should be interesting to see how Nintendo will handle this, after all the big wigs on Nintendo have said that the Wii 2 isn’t coming anytime soon.

AMD Will Not Release Smartphone Chipset

AMD has plans that may not sit well with shareholders. The company is telling people not to expect a smartphone chip. However, AMD did admit that a chip for tablets will be coming out shortly.

Unlike Intel and smaller chip makers who are joining the ever-growing smartphone demand, AMD appears to have no interest in them.

I wonder why AMD does not want to join the popular demand? However, it does take a lot for the company to issue a statement that is against the grain. Though, in the long run I wouldn’t be surprised if the company eventually changes its mind.

Wintek workers still experience effects from n-hexane exposure, Apple issues a report

It’s been a few months since we checked in on the workers at Wintek, where they manufacture touchscreens for the likes of Apple. As you might remember, the former company was facing a lawsuit for chemical poisoning that occurred between May 2008 to August 2009 when the company substituted alcohol for n-hexane in the manufacturing process. Both Apple and Wintek maintain that ultimately a total of 137 people had been hospitalized, and all have recovered — but as Reuters points out, daily exposure to the chemical has been known to cause “long-term and possibly irreversible nerve damage,” and Wintek employees have maintained that the company has left them holding the bag for symptoms that could very well flare up again in the future (or, in some cases, never really went away). “We are unable to cope with the medical costs of treatment in the future,” said Guo Ruiqiang, a worker at the plant. “We can only stay in the factory and see what happens. We just feel very helpless now.” For Apple’s part, the company has mandated that Wintek “work with a consultant to improve their Environmental Health and Safety processes and management systems” in anticipation of a complete reaudit of the facility in 2011.
