More work required for LTE roaming, says Qualcomm CEO

Dr. Paul Jacobs addressing a question about 4G LTE roaming

Dr. Paul Jacobs, the CEO of Qualcomm, was holding a press conference just now and one of the very interesting questions that he addressed was: “when will we be able to roam from one LTE network from one carrier to another?” This is a reasonable question as LTE network are still relatively thin, and international travelers are very much concerned by inter-operability.

It is not very hard to roam with 3G networks and their HSPA+ derivates because they use a fairly limited number of bands. For example, a phone like the GSM Galaxy Nexus can work worldwide, including on most HSPA+ networks such as T-Mobile, AT&T and others in the world. To achieve this, the Nexus handset is compatible with 5 bands (it is a “penta-band” phone), which is relatively rare. Most GSM smartphones are quad-band. (more…)

YouTube for Android 4.0 ends buffering on your favorite videos with precaching, adds remote

YouTube for Android 40 ends buffering on your favorite videos with precaching, adds remote

As Google I/O 2012 rolls along, the YouTube team is updating its Android app to v4.0 with a load of new features, but you’ll need Android 4.0+ to take advantage of them (at least for now, see below). Available in 47 countries, the new app brings a brand new UI with support for channels that reflects the redesign rolled out on the website last year (not the circle-centric look that it is testing with a select few), and it can precache videos from your favorite channels for viewing later. All you have to do is select “preload” in the setting menu and it will pull down videos from your subscriptions and Watch Later queue when plugged in and on WiFi. To actually view them later you will still need to be online, but they’ll load instantly from the device’s storage instead of streaming.

Another new feature is integrated remote functionality to control playback on connected TVs and other devices. This apparently extends to more than just Google TV, as we’re told to “expect more updates later” on how this feature will become broadly available. If you’re not rocking the latest Android software don’t freak out yet, as the team indicates these features will come to more devices later. Developers should be excited too as there’s a slew of new YouTube APIs available, hit the source links below to check them out or download the app yourself.

Google’s Andy Rubin: Nexus 7 may head to retail, but we’re not changing tablet app policies

Google's Andy Rubin Nexus 7 may head to retail, but we're not changing tablet app policies

We’ve got good news and bad news in equal measure for those pining after a Nexus 7 of their very own. If you’re reluctant to spend that much hard-earned cash at the Google Play Store, Google’s senior VP of mobile Andy Rubin has hinted to AllThingsD that the ASUS-made tablet could end up at retail stores before too long; the Play-only availability was just what Google had to mention at I/O. There could be some markup in other channels, given that Google is selling at what’s very nearly wholesale prices. The bad news? Google won’t be changing its attitude towards tablet-native apps anytime soon. Rubin sees Google Play content additions as key to driving Android tablet adoption, not the encouragement of tablet-specific app development — he’d prefer the one-size-fits-all model. We’ll see whether magazines and movie sales are enough to turn around so-so market share, but if you were hoping Rubin would address criticisms that Android tablet apps are just blown-up phone apps, you’ll have to keep waiting.

iPad mini rumors reignite over Nexus 7

Google’s own-brand entrance into the 7-inch tablet market with the Nexus 7 has refueled speculation about a so-called iPad mini, with Apple expected to face increasing pressure to compete at the tweener size. Rumors of a smaller iPad – which would slot into the mid-point between the existing, 9.7-inch model, and the 3.5-inch iPhone and iPod touch – have circulated for as long as the iPad has been on sale; however, the arrival of the new Nexus 7 running Jelly Bean is arguably the biggest motivator yet for Apple to make good on the heresay.

The Nexus 7′s more direct competitor in the slate market is Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble’s NOOK Tablet range. Both of the rivals – which each run Android, albeit with heavy customization – fall into the same near-$200 price window, versus the iPad which starts at $499 for the latest model.

Apple was tipped to deliver a smaller model of tablet alongside its Retina Display third-gen iPad, though instead the company kept on the iPad 2 and lowered the sticker price by $100. Nonetheless, industry observers have continued to predict a new, smaller model, with talk that orders have already been placed and that the new iOS slate could ship in Q3 2012.

Whether Apple would choose to compete with Google (and the others) with direct price parity is questionable. The company has not been afraid to sticker up its products with a relatively premium tag, reflecting a preference to deliver a cohesive all-round device rather than make cuts for the sake of a price target. Nonetheless, the $200 segment could prove more tempting now that Google has waded into it itself.

There’s Something Incomplete About This Wireframe Desk [Wish You Were Here]

A lot of conceptual furniture designs only exist in a computer, and the rendered images we see are meant to make them look real. But it’s just the opposite with Bomi Park’s wireframe creations. They look like they only exist as pixels, but they are actual, physical metal grids. More »

Leashes For Kids: Is Putting Safety Harnesses On Children A Good Idea?

Parenting is an endless series of decisions: Natural birth or epidural? Co-sleeping or separate beds? Private or public school? Allowing them on Facebook or not? The list is infinite. ABC News recently spotlighted a parenting practice that has moms and dads with strong opinions on both sides of the debate: to leash or not to leash?

Last year, Judith Goldberg, author of the “Judy on Duty” advice column for Parents magazine, wrote:

“Leashes are for dogs. You wouldn’t put your child in a crate, or let him poop on the sidewalk, right? If you have a bolter, invest in a cheap umbrella stroller with a buckle.”

Insufficient Vitamin D Linked With Increased Weight In Older Women: Study

Your weight and your vitamin D levels may be linked, according to new research.

A recent study from the nonprofit Kaiser Permanente Center for Heath Research shows that women who have insufficient vitamin D levels are also more likely to gain about two pounds over a nearly five-year period, compared with people who have enough in the vitamin.

“Nearly 80 percent of women in our study had insufficient levels of Vitamin D,” study researcher Dr. Erin LeBlanc, M.D., an endocrinologist and researcher at Kaiser, said in a statement. “A primary source of this important vitamin is sunlight, and as modern societies move indoors, continuous Vitamin D insufficiency may be contributing to chronic weight gain.”

Nokia’s 808 PureView will not be sold by major UK carriers, time to save up some pounds

If you Brits were looking forward to utilizing the 808 PureView’s 41-megapixel sensor while sipping Pimm’s this summer, well, be prepared to pay a hefty price. We’ve heard from O2, Three and Everything Everywhere (the parent company of Orange UK and T-Mobile UK) that they will not be selling said Nokia device in the UK, and Virgin Media told us it isn’t in the pipeline “just yet.” Our friends over at Wired UK have also heard the same bad news from Vodafone and O2, with a source close to the latter laying the blame on Nokia’s “outdated” Symbian Belle system. Ouch. So yes, this means all the major carriers in Her Majesty’s backyard are out of the game; but until we hear back from Carphone Warehouse, there may still be a small chance for keen British mobile photogs to dodge the full £500 ($780) price tag on Amazon (in comparison to $699 on the US site), so stay tuned.

Dems Find A Way To Annoy NASCAR Crowd

Yesterday, Democratic officials announced that they were pulling the plug on their convention kickoff event at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C. The event had been set for Sept. 3, the day before the convention is scheduled to begin in Charlotte.

Organizers had billed the speedway event as a great opportunity for North Carolina residents to obtain a small taste of convention activities and to excite potential Barack Obama voters. There will now be another type of event in Charlotte that Monday night. Concord and the surrounding county could still see boosts in revenue from convention attendees.

But a local TV station reported about the disappointment of a speedway official and noted that Concord workers had already put in hours prepping for the event and won’t be paid for their time. See that report below:
