Doctor Who TARDIS Quilt Surprisingly Not Made from the Fabric of Time

If you are a Doctor Who fan and are getting married, I hope you have a friend like graverobbergirl who created this TARDIS-themed quilt for her friend’s wedding present. She is a very good friend, indeed.
Tardis quilt
It features an swirling TARDIS surrounded by a whole mess of Daleks. Plus there’s a star field border on the outside. This queen-sized quilt measures 92″ x 92″ and is done in a pieced Irish Chain pattern. It was hand-quilted and machine-quilted, along with hand-applique and hand-embroidery.

The lucky couple will sleep just fine at night with this quilt keeping them warm. No doubt they will dream of Daleks and adventures on far away worlds. He will be the Doctor and she the companion. May they be happy for many years.

Vernell Coles Alleges Carilion Clinic Allowed Noose, Shackle Display

A maintenance worker is suing his employer, claiming he was subject to harassment that included displays of shackles and a noose at work.

Vernell Coles claims that Carilion Clinic, where Coles worked for 15 years, passed him up for a promotion in a work environment that was “racially hostile and offensive,” the Roanoke Times reports. Terry Grimes, Coles’ lawyer, alleged that Carilion is “all white, all the time.”

Microsoft loses EU anti-competition $1.1bn fine appeal

Microsoft‘s attempts to have a billion dollar anti-competition fine crossed off the books have been rejected, with the European Union only conceding to a smaller discount on the penalty. Microsoft had submitted an appeal to the General Court of the European Union over an €899m ($1.12bn) 2008 “penalty for noncompliance” with a ruling that it must make third-party compatibility with its server systems more broadly available.

Instead of dismissing the fine, the EU court knocked €39m ($49m) off it, after deciding that the original ruling had been insufficiently clear in laying out to Microsoft the urgency of the requirement to change its behaviors. However, the overriding judgement – that Microsoft had purposefully made integrating third-party code so expensive to do that it rendered it much the same as noncompliance in the first place – was deemed safe.

The court “essentially upholds the Commission’s decision and rejects all the arguments put forward by Microsoft in support of annulment” it said in a statement.

Unsurprisingly, Microsoft itself isn’t as keen on the decision. “Although the General Court slightly reduced the fine,” it said in a statement, “we are disappointed with the Court’s ruling.” The company faced three separate fining incidents, dating back to 2004.

Sprint launching 4G LTE in five cities this coming July 15

Sprint has just announced that it will be deploying 4G LTE in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City and San Antonio on the 15th of July. Sprint CEO Dan Hesse said that the new network will deliver faster data speeds with 4G LTE and an improved overall 3G experience. Today’s announcement is the start of Sprint’s aggressive expansion of its 3G and 4G network through its Network Vision program.

The new network scheduled to be deployed next month hopes that its customers in the aforementioned areas will experience better signal strength, fewer dropped/ blocked calls, faster data speeds, expanded coverage and better overall performance as the improvements roll out across the country.

Sprint expects to complete its 4G LTE nationwide network capable of serving 250 million people in the U.S. by the end of 2013. “The performance of both the 4G LTE and improved 3G networks are exceeding our expectations and we are pleased with the progress of the entire Network Vision program,” Sprint CEO Dan Hesse said.

Hands-On With Sergey Brin’s Personal Set Of Google Glass

IMGT4295

Outside of approved Googlers, a handful of folks have just been given a canned demo of Google Glass, including myself. I’m living in the future and the future is now!

While brief, I demoed Sergey’s own personal set of Glass. They’re extremely lightweight and worked over my existing pair of eyeglasses. In its current iteration, the battery pack is situated on the right side and counterbalances the circuitry and camera hub, so it feels pretty weightless.

The demo itself was fed through the one lens on the right side of some fireworks and audio with the latter only coming in through the right side. Per Sergey’s suggestion I cupped my right ear to really hear the audio. Panning your head around offers up an AR experience. Video quality was fairly poor but, again, these are prototypes and Sergey admitted the demo is old.

Notifications are currently served up to Glass wearers via a “ding” that prompts the user to tilt his or her head up to read the actual message.

I’ll have a bit more on Glass later today but here’s a higher-res photo with another pair of Glasses.

Google Play now has 600,000 apps and over 20 billion app downloads

Google rocked the house at the Google I/O Keynote this morning and heated up the place by introducing Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Then feeding the frenzy is the Nexus 7 tablet that finally silenced all the rumors we’ve been hearing about in the past. And of course, who can forget the Nexus Q, an entirely new device that harnesses the power of Android and Google Play. In addition to all of these, Google also announced that it now has over 600,000 apps on Google Play, nearly close to Apple’s App Store that houses more than 600,000 apps – probably over 650,000. However, Google did not mention how many apps are customized for tablets. Google was also thrilled to announce that Google Play now has over 20 billion downloads, trailing Apple Store’s 30 billion downloads. Google also added that it has so far sold more than 400 million Android handsets this year – a big leap from last year’s 100 million.
