Nokia 808 PureView pre-order hits Amazon UK

How much are you willing to spend on Nokia’s 808 PureView? Whatever figure you had in mind, Amazon UK has thrown up a pre-order page for the 41-megapixel packing phone. The release date is pegged for June 30th, so not long to go, but if you want to own a little piece of history you’ll have to say goodbye to £499.98 (~$782). Expensive, yes, but there also isn’t anything out there quite like it.

We’ve received our 808 PureView here at SlashGear and are currently busy putting it through its paces, but so far we’ve been impressed with the quality of the camera output. Reviews and samples from across the internet also indicate just how good that camera really is, although for the price Nokia is asking we should certainly hope so. Unfortunately, it’s all held back by the inclusion of the Symbian operating system, but hopefully we’ll see the technology make a jump to Windows Phone in the not too distant future.

The phone will be sold unlocked in the United States as well for around $699, with a slightly later release of July 8th. Good news for those on T-Mobile USA though, as the handset will be compatible with the carrier’s 3G bands in addition to AT&T’s. We’ll be bringing you a full review of the phone shortly, so stick around to find out if the PureView is worth the high asking price.

BANGKOK — Two Thai men suspected of killing a 60-year-old Australian tourist on the resort island of Phuket admitted to the crime Tuesday, saying they meant only to slash her pocketbook strap and never meant to stab her.

Police led the suspected slasher and his alleged accomplice, who is accused of driving the motorcycle used in the attack, to re-enact the crime at the spot where Michelle Elizabeth Smith was killed last week. Smith was among 11 people from the western Australian city of Perth who traveled to Phuket on a survey trip for their travel agency.

Queen Elizabeth II To Meet Martin McGuinness, Ex-IRA Chief, On Northern Ireland Trip

ENNISKILLEN, Northern Ireland — Queen Elizabeth II arrived Tuesday in Northern Ireland to celebrate the British territory’s hard-won peace in a town that suffered one of the IRA’s worst massacres – and inspired its greatest moment of Christian forgiveness.

The monarch’s planned meeting Wednesday with former Irish Republican Army commander Martin McGuinness comes the day after her visit to Enniskillen, where a no-warning IRA bomb in 1987 killed 11 Protestant civilians and wounded 63 others as they commemorated British dead from the two world wars.

PC case mod uses fiberboard in place of metal/glass

PC case mods come in all shapes and sizes, but they typically return to metal casings as their choice of material. However in this instance, PC case modder Pirate has decided to go with a medium-density fiberboard, which was his attempt at avoiding having to buy a new desk or going to a metal working shop to get pieces custom made. Unfortunately fiberboard is hardly the best conductor for heat which is why a rather robust cooling system was needed. This resulted in a rig that utilized five fans – three exhaust, two intake,  a radiator along with a liquid cooling system. If you think that this sounds a bit overboard, well it seems like his efforts have paid off as the system sits at roughly 88F (31C) with ambient temperatures around 79F (26C), which admittedly is pretty good.

As far as the hardware specs of his rig is concerned, it sports an Intel Core i5-2500k processor, a Radeon HD 7950 GPU with a water cooling block, and three Dell UltraSharp monitors in an eyefinity setup. This is a pretty cool setup and if you’d like to see how he put it all together, pop on over to his website (warning: image heavy!) for the details.

Amazon’s Kindle Fire 2 rumored for a July launch

With Amazon’s Kindle Fire launching last year with great success, it is not a stretch of the imagination to think that a successor could already be in the works. In fact there have been many rumors suggesting a larger Kindle Fire alongside the 7” model this year, but whichever the case, the folks at CNET have been tipped that Amazon is set to launch the Kindle Fire 2 this summer and could be targeting a 31st of July launch. Unfortunately at the moment, the specs of the device cannot be confirmed. The only rumor of its specs is about a possible increase in its display resolution to that of 1280×800, but apart from that it has been rather quiet on the rumor front.

Could Amazon be launching a refreshed version of the Kindle Fire, or are they looking at a complete overhaul? After all assuming the leaked specs of Google’s Nexus 7 tablet is to be believed, Amazon has their work cut out for them if they hope to remain competitive in the $199 price category. Either way if the 31st of July date pans out, we guess we have a little over a month of waiting to see if it becomes true, and we also expect more leaks and images to appear as the date approaches, so be sure to check back with us for more updates!

‘RHONY’: Ramona Singer Gets Mad At Sonja Morgan, Calls Her ‘An Airhead’ (VIDEO)

On “The Real Housewives Of New York City” (Mon., 9 p.m. ET on Bravo) Wednesday night Ramona Singer was still smarting from being shut out of the London trip by Heather Dubrow.

At a party to celebrate Sonja Morgan’s magazine cover, Ramona flew off the handle when Sonja said, “If Heather’s having a trip, it’s up to her who she wants to invite.”

Waving her wine glass around, Ramona argued that Sonja was missing the point. “You’re being too politically nice,” she said, “and now I’m getting mad at you. You’re wrong. You’re wrong.”

Detecting Parkinson’s could be as easy as placing a simple phone call

Parkinson’s is a degenerative disorder that targets the central nervous system, causing tremors, shaking, stiff muscles and otherwise limited mobility. Unfortunately there is no cure, nor can it be detected via blood tests. However it can be detected via our voices, which is why TED fellow and mathematician Max Little has developed an algorithm that will help detect Parkinson’s in a person simply by making a phone call. The phone call will listen to the caller’s voice and will run it through the algorithm. However in order to make the algorithm more accurate and have a wider database in which they can compare it with, Little is currently seeking help by asking volunteers to place a simple phone call. In the meantime you can check out the video above for more information on Little’s project, or you can also pop on over to his website for the details and to see what else he is working on.
