Lenovo ThinkPad X131e specs detailed

Netbooks may have had their five minutes of fame, but it looks like Lenovo still thinks life left in the category. Netbook News has spotted specs for the upcoming Lenovo X131e, the successor to the X130e that was running AMD’s Zacate platform. The X131e looks to have the new Brazos 2.0 APU, featuring either a E1-1200 or E2-1800 CPU, plus boosted Radeon HD 73xx graphics. Just like the X130e, there will be an optical ULV Core i3 option too.

In terms of design, not much has changed: the 11.6-inch notebook still has a 1366×768 display, but the specs and port selection have been tweaked. Options will include a dual-core E1-1200 clocked at 1.4Ghz, or a E2-1800 clocked at 1.7Ghz. The GPU on the E1-1200 will be a HD 7310, while the E2-1800 gets a HD 7340 with slightly higher clock speeds and a turbo boost mode. TDP for both options is said to be 18W. There will also be an option for a Sandy Bridge Core i3 ULV CPU which will come with the integrated HD 3000 GPU.

Up to 8GB of RAM can be configured with X131e, although speeds get a bump to 1600Mhz, up from 1333Mhz. The notebook also adds two USB 3.0 ports and HDMI v1.4 in addition to the single USB 2.0 port, Ethernet jack, VGA port, and 4-in-1 card reader. Hard drive options include either a 320/500GB drive at 5400/7200RPM, or a 128GB SSD. The whole thing weighs 3.92lbs, and the 6-cell battery is rated for up to 8.5 hours of runtime.

There’s no word on exact pricing, or even a firm release date, but the current X130e runs around $500, so expect a similar starting price for the X131e. Lenovo’s landing page for the X131e only lists “September 2012” right now, so you’ll have to hold tight if this sounds like the right portable notebook.

Instaprints will take your Instagram photos and turns them into physical copies

We’re sure that there are a good many of you guys out there with decent photography skill who have captured photos and have uploaded them onto Instagram for all to see. However if you feel that maybe your photos deserve to make some money and be printed and hung on walls, now there is an option to do that. A new service dubbed Instaprints (not to be confused with Instaprint) has recently launched and it lets Instagram users turn their photos into canvas-and-acrylic prints, greeting cards and/or posters.

Given that pretty much anyone can create and upload an Instagram photo, how does the site separate the amateurs from the pros? Well according to its founder, Sean Broihier, he has coded the site in such a way that the top quality images are the ones that get top billing, while more amateur and frivolous photos will be pushed to the bottom. After all we’re not sure if there is a market for sepia-toned photos of guys doing keg stands, right? Instaprints is by no means the first of its kind, although they are trying to differentiate themselves from the competition by offering more high quality/professional images. If you’d like to browse for some photos or maybe upload and sell your own, head on over to their website for the details.

Booster iOS photography app lets you switch and adjust filters live

Snapping your photos and then applying a filter is usually the route that many photographers take. Some effects like Sepia, Black & White, Infrared, etc can be applied before taking the photo, but for the most part additional and fancier effects are usually a post-photography process. That being said, an app dubbed Booster is interested in bringing those effects live so photographers will know what sort of photo they will be getting once they press the shutter button.

Developed by misskiwi who also created other iOS photography apps such as Squara, ClassicINSTA and ClassicToy, Booster will come with seven different effects that photographers can choose and tweak right on the spot before taking their photo. It will also be taking full advantage of the iPhone 4S’ processing power and will save photos at full res. Unfortunately iPhone 4 users will only have their photos saved at 1530×2048, about 2MP less than the phone is capable of handling. So if you’re looking for a camera app that allows you to tweak filters live, Booster might be an app worth considering. It is available on the iTunes App Store for $0.99.

Friendthem sues Facebook over “Find Friends Nearby” feature

Facebook logoNot too long ago, Facebook launched its Find Friends Nearby feature which basically allowed Facebook users to look for friends who might be in the vicinity. However the feature was then pulled, leaving many to wonder why. Some have attributed this feature to being rather “stalker-ish”, but it might have something to do with mobile app developer Friendthem’s lawsuit against Facebook. According to the company’s CEO, he approached Facebook with the idea back in February, so we guess it wasn’t really a coincidence that Facebook decided to launch something similar several months down the line.

The CEO states that the idea was pitched to a Facebook executive who allegedly said, “I really like this idea”. According to their attorney who spoke with the folks at Mashable, “We will proceed with a lawsuit as soon as we confirm the information we have, but we don’t want to do things irresponsibly.” Could that be why the feature was pulled so quickly due to an impending lawsuit, or was it for other reasons? Either way we will refrain from too much speculating for now, so be sure to check back with us in the future as we will keep you updated on its progress.

Mitt Romney ‘Outsourcer-In-Chief,’ Obama Campaign Ads Say (VIDEO)

President Barack Obama’s reelection campaign released three new ads today, escalating attacks on Mitt Romney’s outsourcing of American jobs while leading private equity firm Bain Capital.

The 30-second spots, which will air in battleground states Virginia, Ohio and Iowa, continue to brand the presumptive Republican nominee as an “outsourcer-in-chief” and borrow clips from Romney’s state-specific “Day One” series of ads, questioning his promises to stand up to China and create jobs for American workers. Obama’s ads are based on a Washington Post report last week that highlighted Bain’s investment in companies that sent American jobs overseas.

The Washington Post has just revealed that Romney’s companies were pioneers in shipping U.S. jobs overseas,” says the Obama ad narrator. “Investing in firms that specialized in relocating jobs done by American workers to new facilities in low-wage countries like China and India.”

2013 Ford Taurus gets EPA certified best in class fuel economy

It seems like every time you drive by the gas station, prices are going up. That means fuel economy is one of the biggest concerns of most people when they’re shopping for a new vehicle. It used to be when buying a new car if you wanted lots of fuel efficiency; you had to buy something small. That’s no longer the case with larger midsized vehicles such as the 2013 Ford Taurus that get excellent fuel economy.

Ford is talking about the 2013 Taurus, and the fact that it has EPA certified fuel economy with its new 2-liter EcoBoost engine of 32 mpg. The 32 mpg rating makes the new Taurus the most fuel-efficient vehicle in its class. That 2-liter EcoBoost engine is more fuel-efficient than the V6 versions of the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry while offering comparable power output.

All three available engines in the Taurus are rated for 25 mpg or higher. Other available engines include the base, 3.5-liter V6 engine and the Taurus SHO engine. The SHO uses the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 producing 365 HP and 350 pound-foot of torque. Even the powerful SHO engine can deliver 25 mpg on highway. Ford is also using electric power-assisted steering and aggressive deceleration fuel shutoff along with other tech to make the cars more efficient. The 2013 Taurus will hit dealer showrooms this summer.

Wolfson confirms the Samsung Galaxy S III uses its audio chip

Wolfson confirms the Samsung Galaxy S III will use its audio chip

The Galaxy S III was widely tipped to possess a Wolfson digital-to-analog converter for high quality audio output — a feature not seen in this range since the first Galaxy S. That notion has just been confirmed by the Scottish electronics firm itself, which says its WM1811 Audio Hub has been selected for use in Sammy’s flagship. The chip promises “crystal clear voice call quality” and “enriched audio playback for music and video” thanks to its 24-bit hi-fi DAC, active noise reduction circuits and other wizardry. The GS II, meanwhile, used a Yamaha DAC to convert digital data (e.g. in an mp3 file) into an analog signal that could drive a speaker (for example in your headphones), but even if most people couldn’t hear the difference, audiophiles have insisted they preferred the sound in the older Galaxy. The only question remaining, which the PR after the break does not expand upon, is whether the Wolfson hardware is found in all variants of the new phone. Check out the More Coverage links for further reading.

Update: Francois Simond (aka Supercurio) tweeted us to say that the US variant of the GS III uses Qualcomm’s own WCD9310 for audio, not the Wolfson. Yup, it’s that multi-talented Snapdragon S4 again.

New Mass Effect 3 ending available for download on Xbox

I never really understood all the uproar centering on the ending of Mass Effect 3. Dead, is never really dead in a science fiction video game. I’m sure if the developers wanted to bring Shepherd and crew back for a fourth installment, they could figure out some way to make that inconvenient death go away. Still, there were lots of people that were very angry at the ending of the video game.

EA and BioWare promised a while back that a new ending that expanded on the original ending would be offered. If you play Mass Effect 3 on the Xbox 360, that expanded ending is now available for download. The download content is free and is available right now. Be prepared to wait a while, the download is 1.85 GB.

The teaser page for the new ending offers very little detail of what you’re going to see. It simply says the download is an expanded ending for Mass Effect 3. The ending has additional scenes and an extended epilogue to show the impact of Shepherd’s choices on the future of the galaxy.
