The Real Cost Of Sleepaway Camp

On top of basic camp fees, parents of sleep-away campers will pay as much as 50 percent more for other expenses — from extra underwear to little forget-me-not gifts, side trips from camp to nearby cities and special sports programs. All told, summer camp will lead to $15 billion in spending, the ACA estimates.

Eric Holder Contempt Resolution Passes, But Legal Dispute Looms

WASHINGTON — House Republicans won a historic political fight to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress, but the GOP probably is still a long way from obtaining documents it wants in an investigation of a bungled Justice Department gun-tracking operation.

There are two routes to enforcing the contempt citations approved by the House on Thursday, a criminal prosecution and a civil lawsuit, although the White House on Friday virtually shut down the criminal path. The civil route through the courts would not be resolved anytime soon.

DaeQuan Morrison, 13-Year-Old, Publishes Book To Cope With Mom’s Cancer, Donates Proceeds To Research

When DaeQuan Morrison’s mom, Patricia, was diagnosed with breast cancer three years ago, he dealt with it the best way he knew how: He published a book.

At age 10, DaeQuan penned “What’s the Spook?,” a 28-page storybook following a boy whose series of escalating nightmares lead him into the underworld. The book, which is based on DaeQuan’s experience with chronic nightmares following his mother’s cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy treatment, culminates with his realization that closeness to God is the only way to overcome his fears, he told the New York Daily News.

Patricia is now three years into her battle with breast cancer, and DaeQuan, now 13, has offered to donate the proceeds from his book — currently selling for $18 at Amazon and Barnes & Noble — to the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research Manhasset, N.Y.

McLaren MP4-12C Spider teases 616HP of droptop

McLaren has previewed its next ultra-expensive sportscar, the 12C Spider, a convertible version of its high-performance MP4-12C. The new droptop will be officially detailed on July 3, but McLaren couldn’t resist slipping out a teaser shot and some early performance figures: how does a 616 horsepower twin-turbo V8 engine strike you?

That V8 will, like the existing MP4-12C, be capable of the 0-60mph dash in just three seconds. It also uses its coupe sibling’s carbon fiber MonoCell chassis, with McLaren saying that despite losing the roof, the convertible will be just as dynamic and responsive to drive thanks to the underlying stiffness.

Unconfirmed is whether that convertible roof will be soft or hard: there are mutterings of a folding hard-top with a somewhat unconventional design, but McLaren is playing images of that close to its chest. Still, most of the time we’re guessing drivers will want the open air, all the better to hear the roar of the V8.

Price is, again, another missing detail, but with the coupe version coming in at in excess of $230,000, it’s almost guaranteed that the Spider will break the quarter-million mark and probably by a significant margin.
