Jared Sullinger To Celtics With 21st Pick Of 2012 NBA Draft

BOSTON (AP) — Jared Sullinger had back problems. Fab Melo’s troubles came in the classroom. The Boston Celtics hope the two big men they drafted on Thursday night will help fix some of their issues on the court.

At their best, Sullinger was a productive scorer from the inside and the perimeter for Ohio State and Melo was an outstanding defender who blocked 10 shots in one game last season for Syracuse.

“We think this draft kind of fell perfectly almost for us because we got guys we consider potential starters down the road at the power forward and center position,” Celtics assistant general manager Ryan McDonough said. “By all accounts, they’re good kids and hard workers.”

Nokia CEO rues recent company decisions, says report

It appears that Research In Motion isn’t alone in the struggle. Earlier this month, Nokia released a press release citing that it will ax 10,000 jobs on a global scale by the end of 2013. According to Asymco analyst and founder Horace Dediu, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop has a few regrets about some of the company’s recent decisions.

Dediu quoted the Nokia CEO’s words from a Finnish newspaper saying, “The past year and a half have had situations where we might [have done] some things differently if we had known [things were] changing so rapidly, even faster than anyone could have predicted”. (more…)

Chinese government to launch Netflix rival

Although Hollywood doesn’t exactly have a chummy relationship with China, the nation is hoping it can start changing that by promising revenue deals for studios that opt to be a part of a new government-run streaming movie service. The idea sounds like something most Americans could never even imagine, but it could be a huge thing for those in China.

The new online service, which is to be operated by the state-owned China Movie Channel, has already signed on a content agreement with Paramount Pictures. Movies and TV shows are included. MGM is apparently also interested in providing content. The service is likely to be priced at the equivalent of less than $10 a month, on par with Netflix. China is partnering up with a company called Jiaflix Enterprises.

“This new venture will bring the best that Hollywood has to offer to viewers in China. It represents a great opportunity for Hollywood to increase its exports to China and enhance cultural cooperation between our two nations,” said Jiaflix partner Sid Ganis, who is also a Columbia Pictures chairman. It will launch in the fourth quarter of the year.

California Budget Trigger Cuts: Gov. Jerry Brown Signs $6 Billion In Automatic Cuts If Initiative Fails

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Gov. Jerry Brown and Democratic lawmakers have long warned of dire consequences if California voters reject a proposed tax hike on the November ballot. In adopting a $91.3 state billion budget, they made it clear it wasn’t a hollow threat.

Lawmakers approved and the governor signed $6 billion in automatic cuts late Wednesday that will go into effect if the initiative fails. Distasteful provisions added in the final days of negotiations authorized shorter school years, less money for local police, and possible fee increases at the University of California and California State University systems.
