Yamaha Vocaloid on Miselu Neiro synth: exclusive hands-on at Google I/O 2012

Did you enjoy our first look at the latest apps being showcased on Miselu‘s Neiro Android-powered synth here at Google I/O 2012? Want more? You’ve come to the right place. As promised here’s an exclusive hands-on with Yamaha’s Vocaloid app demoed by the man behind the technology himself — video game designer Tetsuya Mizuguchi. We got the chance to play with an early build of the software running on the same 3-octave prototype version of the synth that we last saw at SXSW. The verdict? It works pretty well considering the pre-alpha status of the code. The app features two modes of operation — edit and play — the former letting you type or speak text and map it to an existing melody and the latter allowing you to chose preset sentences and “sing” them with the keyboard. Pictures are worth a thousand words, so take a look at our gallery below and watch our hands-on video after the break.

Nexus Q hacked to run Android games in under 24 hours

Nexus Q hacked to run Android games in under 24 hours

The word “run” in the headline is chosen very carefully. Developer Christina Kelly managed to get Swords and Soldiers up and running on the Nexus Q, but the game is not actually playable. Without a touchscreen or any other way to actually control the title, there’s not much to do besides look at the splash screen. Still, the fact that in under 24 hours Google’s new streaming appliance has already made to fire up unapproved apps bodes well for its future with the hacker community. Once the device gets in the hands of more devs we imagine it’ll only a matter of time before someone figures out a way to get Hulu or Netflix running on it, with your Android phone acting as the remote.

Recon Instruments MOD HUD Hands-on

Earlier today we mentioned a little bit about Recon Instruments and their new MOD Heads-up Display technology. They offer something similar to Google’s Project Glass, only it is available today for just $399. These will be your ultimate companion while going skiing or snowboarding, and much more is planned for the future.

Imagine getting directions while snowboarding down a mountain. Weather conditions, time, speed MPH readings and much much more. That is exactly what you can do with Recon Instruments new MOD HUD. What makes this even better is it’s available now — not 2013 — and they’ve just dropped their Android SDK so developers can start working on companion apps. Here’s a short video explaining the product a little better:

Here at Google IO Recon has unleashed their developer SDK so those interested can start building apps to accompany them down the mountain while using Recon’s HUD. These apps will then be connected to the HUD via a smartphone or tablet and the options are limitless. While talking with Tyson Miller from Recon he explained that they are working with multiple Goggle companies like Smith and more to integrate their product into wearable units. Currently the device in the video and pictures below is just a prototype, as they only sale the HUD, not the actual Goggles too.

Recon also states that while this is currently only available for Ski and Snowboard goggles, they plan to bring to market multiple different offerings for any type of activity. Once developers dive into the SDK the options for apps and uses will greatly increase. Developers can get started here, and the Recon Instruments MOD is shipping now for just $399.

Nintendo’s latest hire is Disney video game exec

Nintendo has added a new member to its team, a man who held a leading position at Disney’s video game department. Are you asking, “So what?” right now. You should be. Companies hire new people all the time, but what’s interesting about this situation is what Duncan Orrell-Jones is expected to bring to the table. He will be heading up the “development and evolution” of Nintendo’s digital strategy.

Let’s be honest. Nintendo thrived when video games were all about popping in a cartridge and getting immersed into a solitary experience. It blew away the competition. And it still does thrive in that space. The only problem is that gaming is becoming less and less about that. It’s now going online, it’s becoming social, and gamers demand instant access to new content – they’re even willing to pay for it. But Nintendo is not on their level. There is no Nintendo parallel to the PlayStation Network.

The Wii U will be Nintendo’s big chance to show that it has learned over the last five years about just how much the industry has shifted. It needs to have an extremely robust system of digital connectivity and distribution. We haven’t seen any evidence that it will meet that requirement, but hopefully it will be able to. The console’s Miiverse online social platform may be what it needs to compete against things like Xbox Live. For now, though, Nintendo isn’t saying much.

Anthony Davis, Harrison Barnes, NBA Draft Prospects, Play With Kids At NBA Fit Clinic In Harlem

Fourteen top NBA prospects teamed up with a group of kids at The Children’s Aid Society Dunlevy Milbank Boys & Girls Club in Harlem Wednesday to lend their athletic talent to a healthful cause. Popular players, including Thomas Robinson and Bradley Beal, spent the day before the NBA draft running an NBA Fit Clinic, leading more than 100 children through several fitness drills.

The clinic, created by the NBA Cares initiative, uses basketball as a language to promote staying active and living healthy.

“You see their faces today,” Todd Jacobson, NBA Care’s senior vice president of community relations, said of the kids participating in the clinic. “They’re just so excited to spend time with the players and that’s what it’s all about — to encourage them to go out and to be active everyday.”

‘Weeds’ Enters Season 8, But Here’s When We All Stopped Watching

Weeds” is entering its eighth and final season on Showtime this week (Season 8 premieres Sunday, July 1 at 10 p.m. ET) and it certainly been a long ride for Nancy Botwin (Mary Louise Parker) and co.

The pot-centric series has grown far past its Agrestic roots, literally and figuratively. “Weeds” has boasted guest stars from Mary-Kate Olsen to Alanis Morissette and covered storylines ranging from cancer to kinky breast-feeding. (Yes, you read right.)

Thanks to some aforementioned turn-offs, HuffPost TV staff Maureen Ryan, Maggie Furlong, Jaimie Etkin, Chris Harnick, Alex Moaba and Leigh Weingus haven’t been tuning in to “Weeds” as of late, although it was once appointment viewing.
