With the advent of molecular gastronomy and modernist cooking, sous vide machines have come into vogue. In short, they cook your vacuum-sealed bags of food (meats, vegetables, whatever), in a bath of warm water kept at a constant temperature. The benefit is supposed to be that your food is never overcooked, and always tender. But there are the critics who say the end result isn’t thaaaaat amazing (and carries some health hazards if you’re not careful). What say you, tech chefs? Is the case for sous vide cooking overstated? More »
CNN, the self-proclaimed “Worldwide Leader In News,” made a fumble of epic — and hilarious — proportions Thursday when it mistakenly reported that the U.S. Supreme Court had struck down the individual mandate in President Obama’s Affordable Healthcare Plan (to be fair, Fox News also got it wrong, but that doesn’t surprise anyone). Now that we know the truth, let’s take a look at some of Twitter’s funniest reactions to CNN’s historic fail.
Fits.me Finally Shipping A New Robot That Makes It Easier To See What You’re Going To Look Like In That Suit
Posted in: Today's ChiliAs a fat, lazy blogger, I find myself often buying clothes online only to discover that XXL for a designer in Spain is basically a XXS for babies in America. The resulting shape and return fees were enough to drive me to distraction – until I saw this wild robot call the FitBot.
The robot – which is finally in production – essentially takes your measurements and reproduces them in real time. Got a big old tummy and broad shoulders? FitBot will show you what that shirt will look like on you. It can reproduce up to 2,000 body permutations and can be used by, say, an online store to show exactly what a certain shirt will look like on various people.
Barring some sort of live webcam feed, the way stores would use this is to take a shot of every possible permutation on the FitBot dummy. Then, when you tell the shop how grotesque you are (or, in the case of everyone besides me, well-built), the FitBot catalog will spit out the proper image.
No work on availability yet in actual stores but you can see the technology over at fits.me where it’s being offered to retailers. I, for one, welcome our golden clothes-fitting robotic overlords.

Orange France begins nationwide NFC SIM rollout in the name of ‘Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité’
Posted in: Today's Chili NFC’s potential uses are numerous — contactless mobile payments, automated actions and content sharing to name a few — but aside from its scattered inclusion in a limited number of handsets in the US and overseas, we’ve yet to see it truly take off. Cue Orange France. The wireless carrier’s taking a non-traditional route to spur adoption by sidestepping manufacturers and bringing the near field communication tech to all 27 million of its subscribers directly. To do this, the operator’s implementing Gemalto’s UpTeq SIM, a secure NFC solution the company claims is on par with existing chip-based implementations. Going forward, the enhanced SIMs will be standard issue for new post-paid users throughout the carrier’s home footprint, while current subs will have to contact Orange to specifically request it. Head on past the break to check out the company’s official PR.

Jim Cramer didn’t see that one coming.
Speaking on TheStreet Thursday, the host of CNBC’s “Mad Money” said he wasn’t sure why Chief Justice John Roberts decided to join the majority opinion of the Supreme Court to uphold a central piece of President Obama’s health care law. But Cramer was sure about one thing: The decision is going to hurt small businesses.
“This is something that if you’re a small business man, you’re really worried about because you have to provide more health care than you’d like to,” he said. “Everybody who thought they were going to have to pay is going to pay. If you’re Home Depot, you have to spend more money. And if you’re a little hardware store with 40 or 50 employees, you’ll also have to pay more.”
