Google Q device is Made in the USA

The Google Nexus Q is a home media player that was just unveiled yesterday during the Google IO keynote. It is an Google experiment (in a crowded market) that is well designed, attractive and hard to build. Interestingly, the Google Nexus Q is also an experiment in USA-based manufacturing. At the bottom of the device, there’s a sticker which says “Made in the USA”. This is almost symbolic for a company that has had strained relations with the Chinese government.

Talking to the NYTimes, Andy Rubin (the Android business General Manager) said that Goole wanted to try manufacturing “something” in the USA, and thought ‘Why don’t we try it and see what happens?’ The google Nexus Q is an ideal test candidate as it is hard to build, but quantities should be low at the same time.   (more…)

Chrome tops 310 million users, almost 100% growth over last year

Chrome tops 310 million users

Last year at Google IO, the company was bragging that it had racked up 160 million Chrome users. Since then, that number has nearly doubled, with the company claiming 310 million active users. Those consumers download roughly 1TB of data per day and type about 60 billion words according to Mountain View’s crack team of analysts. The company even claims that 13 years of time have been saved thanks to the magic of Chrome’s speedy rendering engine.

New Chrome release squashes more bugs

With each new release of a particular software or game, you can be sure that the efficiency ratio goes nowhere but up – most of the time, anyways. Of course, there are moments when companies actually fail to achieve what they originally set out to do, but Google does seem to have the formula down pat with the latest Chrome release that is in line with their timetable of a roll out once every six weeks. If you have set your browser’s updating properties to automatic, then chances are you are already enjoying the benefit of over a hundred bug fixes with the latest release. Those who are curious and have a technical mind can head on here to read all about the bug releases, while the rest can just rest easy knowing that what they are using is most probably the most stable version of Chrome just yet.

3D printer enthusiasts create cake-icing machine

We might not quite be at the level of technological brilliance that allows us to sit at home on the computer, press the “print” button, and have a cake appear next to you in a few minutes. But that didn’t stop a group of creative 3D printing fanatics from using similar technology to create a machine that autonomously prints icing onto a cake, allowing custom, advanced designs.

The group, which refers to themselves as CNCDudez, uses what it calls a “punch and extrude method” wherein a package of buttercream frosting is maneuvered around the cake, and squirted out in a very specific pattern so as to match the design laid out in the specified program. It kind of reminds us of the “Burrito 3D printer” we saw just a little while ago. There are actually fabrication machines that can create recipes and food using 3D printing technologies.

This trend of 3D printing components and processes being used for purposes other than material and product fabrication is certainly an interesting development. It’s a symbol of just how mainstream the technology has become, in just a very short span of time. Anything that can be used in applications from sophisticated medical research to street-corner food vendors has a bright future.

Minecraft TARDIS: Blockier on the Everywhere

YouTuber UnlimitedMind42′s Doctor Who Minecraft machinima is so awesome you might not mind if the Twelfth Doctor was Dr. Steve. It’s all here – a TARDIS that’s actually bigger on the inside, time travel and a blocky David Tennant.

At first it seems that the Doctor is only traveling through space and not through time, but be patient. Who am I kidding – patience is a nonexistent virtue on the Internet. Skip to 3:00 in the video to see the proof that he is indeed traveling through time.

UnlimitedMind42 should have used the Weeping Angels mod for an additional reference. Again, this is not a mod, just a fun video, but you can get the textures that UnlimitedMind42 made – including the David Tennant skin – here.

Scientists See Star Blasting a Planet for the First Time Ever [Video]

Imagine you’re outside, walking happily on a beautiful sunny day. Suddenly, the light gets intense. You look up, and see a bright flash filling everything. Seconds later, a powerful wind starts pushing the clouds out of view at hypersonic speed. Buildings, trees, and people fly away, disintegrating into a billion pieces. Everything around you disappears and the sky is no longer blue, because the atmosphere has been blown away like a candle. More »

Richard Brodsky: The Stockton Bankruptcy: Where Are Obama and Mitt?

On Tuesday, Stockton, California declared bankruptcy. There’s blame enough to go around. The mechanics of a solution will come, but only after we settle out the more difficult questions that no one wants to talk about. It won’t come from Obama or Romney.
