Atari offers 100 iOS games free for 40th anniversary

Atari is celebrating its 40th anniversary by giving away 100 of its most popular retro games for free on iTunes. Each iOS version pays homage to the original and is designed to mimic the gameplay that Atari fans remember. The games are in an app called Atari’s Greatest Hits, which normally costs $9.99.

The 100 games are based on the classic versions made for the Atari 2600. They are arranged in alphabetical order and by category along with their original cabinet and box art. Each game is downloaded separately from within the app and is unlocked across all your iOS devices. Popular titles include Asteroids, Centipede, and Pong.

Some of the games, such as Warlords and Tempest, feature Bluetooth multiplayer capability, while others can be played using the Atari’s Arcade Duo Powered joystick, sold separately. However, the games only remain free if you do not uninstall the app. Once you do so and have to reinstall, you will have to pay for the app.

Google Play vs Apple iTunes: Who Wins? [Chatroom]

Fortune writer Philip Elmer-DeWitt lays out an interesting argument in his latest piece: the most important competition between Apple and Google isn’t a hardware battle, or OS battle. Whoever wins this war could depend on who has the best digital content store. Obviously having killer apps is important, but no Google is banking on entertainment as well. Qualcomm OpenGL driver turns 2D games into 3D

Taking a page from the “PC development” book, Qualcomm was demonstrating its latest Open GL driver which can turn 2D games into 3D without intervention from the developers. This demo is running with an Adreno 225 GPU, which can now be commonly found in high-end smartphones like select HTC One handsets or Samsung Galaxy SIII handsets in the USA. In this demo, the Adreno 225 powers a 1080p glasses-less 3D tablet display from master image, which looks much better than their 720p equivalent. When it comes to glasses-less 3D, resolution does matter a lot. (more…)

Health Care Reform Ruling Means Young Adults Can Stay On Parents’ Plans

The kids are alright.

As part of its landmark decision to uphold most of President Obama’s health care law, the Supreme Court kept a provision that allows adult children to stay on their parents’ health plans up until the age of 26. The court ruled Thursday that Obama’s individual mandate, which included the provision, was a constitutional use of Congress’ power to levy taxes.

The measure covering adult children, one of the most recognizable elements of Obama’s bill, would provide relief to young adults struggling to afford health insurance on their own. Since some parts of the health care law went into effect in 2010, the share of Americans aged 18 to 25 without health insurance dropped to 23 percent from 28 percent. That’s roughly 6.6 million with health insurance because of the law.
