Since 1999, the BBC’s Red Button feature has delivered alternative camera angles, sports scores and the like over broadcast spectrum, but it’s now set to become internet enabled. Channel surfers shouldn’t expect a full-blown web experience, however, as the Beebs stresses it’s not about to include everything and the kitchen sink in terms of functionality. Rather, their Connected Red Button aims for simplicity. Punching the clicker could bring up the iPlayer to catch previous episodes of shows or save recipes from a cooking program for later viewing on a computer or smartphone. Companion screen experiences such as the Antiques Roadshow app, which is slated for a September release, are also part of their web-connected roadmap. Mum’s the word on when these new features might roll out, but we’re promised the BBC’s Olympics coverage will give us a taste of what’s to come.

HAVANA — Endurance swimmer Penny Palfrey pushed through the calm waters of the Florida Straits overnight and through the Saturday dawn, enduring jellyfish stings but otherwise encountering perfect conditions as she neared the halfway mark in her attempt to become the first woman to swim unassisted from Cuba to Florida.
By 8:38 a.m. EDT (1248 GMT), a little over 25 hours into the swim, the 49-year-old grandmother was 48 miles (77 kilometers) from her starting point at a marina in the Cuban capital, Scott Woodburn, who is part of Palfrey’s landing team in the Florida Keys, told The Associated Press.
CHICAGO — Paul Maholm pitched into the ninth inning to earn his first win in seven weeks and the Chicago Cubs hit three homers in a 4-0 victory over the Houston Astros on Friday.
Maholm (5-6) allowed four hits over 8 1-3 innings in his 200th major league start, earning his first win since he tossed seven shutout innings in a 1-0 victory over Atlanta on May 9. The left-hander was 0-4 with a 6.43 ERA in his previous eight outings.

Both were on generous display as he bid farewell to a loving crowd that lavished him with bouquets, cheers, and endless shouts of “Bravo!”
“The Sound of Music” is coming to NBC. The network will partner with “Smash” producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron to air a live broadcast of the classic musical based on the original Broadway show.
“It is our supreme pleasure to broadcast — live — a new version of the seminal Broadway musical ‘The Sound of Music’ for a whole new generation,” Robert Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment, said in a statement. “There used to be a tradition of broadcasting musicals live back in the 1950s and we’re thrilled to do it once again with a musical that has been a family classic for five decades. There is no more talented and creative producing team than Craig Zadan and Neil Meron to bring Rodgers and Hammerstein’s final — and most beloved — collaboration to network television in this groundbreaking live telecast.”
This won’t be a remake of the movie version, Zadan said in a press release. “What we want to do, instead, is to give audiences a completely fresh experience of this great Tony Award-winning stage musical in the form of a classic television event, combined with the spontaneity of a live performance.” All actors will be singing live, there won’t be lip-synching with pre-recordings, Zadan said.
