A recent graduate of Northwestern University, Taylor Barrett felt nervous about leaving Walnut, her 11-week-old Chihuahua puppy, home alone while she was at the office all day. But instead of overpaying for a too-luxe doggie daycare, she turned to technology for the solution. More »
Since 1999, the BBC’s Red Button feature has delivered alternative camera angles, sports scores and the like over broadcast spectrum, but it’s now set to become internet enabled. Channel surfers shouldn’t expect a full-blown web experience, however, as the Beebs stresses it’s not about to include everything and the kitchen sink in terms of functionality. Rather, their Connected Red Button aims for simplicity. Punching the clicker could bring up the iPlayer to catch previous episodes of shows or save recipes from a cooking program for later viewing on a computer or smartphone. Companion screen experiences such as the Antiques Roadshow app, which is slated for a September release, are also part of their web-connected roadmap. Mum’s the word on when these new features might roll out, but we’re promised the BBC’s Olympics coverage will give us a taste of what’s to come.

HAVANA — Endurance swimmer Penny Palfrey pushed through the calm waters of the Florida Straits overnight and through the Saturday dawn, enduring jellyfish stings but otherwise encountering perfect conditions as she neared the halfway mark in her attempt to become the first woman to swim unassisted from Cuba to Florida.
By 8:38 a.m. EDT (1248 GMT), a little over 25 hours into the swim, the 49-year-old grandmother was 48 miles (77 kilometers) from her starting point at a marina in the Cuban capital, Scott Woodburn, who is part of Palfrey’s landing team in the Florida Keys, told The Associated Press.
CHICAGO — Paul Maholm pitched into the ninth inning to earn his first win in seven weeks and the Chicago Cubs hit three homers in a 4-0 victory over the Houston Astros on Friday.
Maholm (5-6) allowed four hits over 8 1-3 innings in his 200th major league start, earning his first win since he tossed seven shutout innings in a 1-0 victory over Atlanta on May 9. The left-hander was 0-4 with a 6.43 ERA in his previous eight outings.

NEW YORK — Let the record reflect that Angel Corella went out spinning.
The American Ballet Theatre star who retired from the company Thursday after an emotional performance of “Swan Lake” was most famous for two things: His whiplash-fast pirouettes and his sunny, buoyant personality. Both were on generous display as he bid farewell to a loving crowd that lavished him with bouquets, cheers, and endless shouts of “Bravo!”
“The Sound of Music” is coming to NBC. The network will partner with “Smash” producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron to air a live broadcast of the classic musical based on the original Broadway show.
“It is our supreme pleasure to broadcast — live — a new version of the seminal Broadway musical ‘The Sound of Music’ for a whole new generation,” Robert Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment, said in a statement. “There used to be a tradition of broadcasting musicals live back in the 1950s and we’re thrilled to do it once again with a musical that has been a family classic for five decades. There is no more talented and creative producing team than Craig Zadan and Neil Meron to bring Rodgers and Hammerstein’s final — and most beloved — collaboration to network television in this groundbreaking live telecast.”
This won’t be a remake of the movie version, Zadan said in a press release. “What we want to do, instead, is to give audiences a completely fresh experience of this great Tony Award-winning stage musical in the form of a classic television event, combined with the spontaneity of a live performance.” All actors will be singing live, there won’t be lip-synching with pre-recordings, Zadan said.
Polluting Countries Ranked By Carbon Dioxide Emissions With Climate Considered
Posted in: Today's ChiliWhich countries are the worst emitters of carbon dioxide?
Researchers continue to develop the best metrics for ranking polluting countries, and now, a new factor has come into play.
In a new study, University of Michigan researchers accounted for both climate and GDP when looking at total emissions from each country. The addition of climate considerations led to surprising results, researchers Michael Sivak and Brandon Schoettle recently explained in American Scientist.
Health Care Ruling: After Supreme Court Decision, Some Democrats Still Skittish, GOP Riled
Posted in: Today's ChiliWASHINGTON — The constitutional win for President Barack Obama and Democrats on health care overhaul is reopening political cuts within the party over the unpopular law.
Four months to an election with control of Congress in the balance, the Supreme Court’s affirmation of the law left several Democrats insisting that the issue was settled and it’s time to focus on jump-starting a sluggish economy.

Over the years, USB drives have become smaller, sleeker, and more compact than they’ve ever been – even while packing tons of gigabytes into a teeny, tiny device. SanDisk has always been known for good quality flash drives, and I especially like how they managed to make the Cruzer Fit so compact (it’s the size of a thumbnail and can hold up to 16GB) And then there’s the Cruzer Pop, which takes flash drives from just being functional to being ultra flashy and creatively decorated.
There’s the black and gray checkered one that’s a bit more low-key, red with the symmetrical design that’s simple yet loud, and the white one with printed-on paint that looks like it’s running down the drive. Not only that, but they’re extremely thin, too, at 0.15 inches thick.
The Pop got its name not form its look alone, but also how you’re supposed to use it: just pop the drive open to reveal the USB connector, and plug it into the USB hub. The drives are available in 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB and will be available in retail outlets soon.
