My favorite political activity by far is called canvassing, which means actually knocking on doors to get out the vote. Admittedly, being “Bowzer” is part of the fun of canvassing for me.

T-Mobile USA’s former CEO Phillipp Humm to become chief executive at Vodafone on October 1st
Posted in: Today's ChiliLess than 24 hours after the unexpected news that Phillipp Humm had penned his resignation as T-Mobile USA’s CEO, Reuters is now reporting he himself has said a chief executive position awaits him at Vodafone. As you may know, this comes after the Magenta carrier had stated Humm would be leaving to reunite with his family back in the Old Continent, and seek a new career outside of Deutsche Telekom. According to the report, Phillipp Humm’s new role will be as a chief executive for Vodafone’s operations in northern and central Europe, which is set to begin as early as October 1st. Naturally, Vodafone CEO Vittorio Colao seems to be quite satisfied with Humm’s upcoming arrival, saying it “will be a strong addition to the Vodafone group executive committee.”

I met Tito Beveridge, the man behind Tito’s Handmade Vodka, about 15 years ago when he first started making vodka in Austin, Tex. Thinking it would be great to do advertising work for an adult beverage company, I called him. He told me he couldn’t afford advertising, but he invited me out to his still — and I couldn’t resist visiting a maker of spirits during business hours.
It was a hot Texas summer day, and I recall driving down a long, dusty dirt road outside of Austin’s city limits to find a little shack with concrete floors (before they were cool) and a black Lab at the door. Mr. Beveridge was pretty much a one-man operation then, but he sat and talked to me about his product and his story as if I were the largest distributor in the country and I’d come looking to make a deal. In the corner of the room was a tall still, sweating a bit in the Texas heat.

We all know that Yelp can sometimes be a fair-weather friend to restaurants. One day you’re riding high, earning serious praise from citizen reviewers — and then just as fast, your restaurant’s reputation can get hammered by one unhappy customer. We think the tactic employed by this restaurant’s sign-writer is pretty fantastic. Way to make lemonade out of lemons, you guys.

Attorney and firebrand Geoffrey Fieger waded full bore into the issues of race this week, raising eyebrows with both an ad that was part commercial/part racism PSA and with comments to radio talk-show host Charlie Langton that Detroit “really has to attract young white people…It can’t be a black city.”
Fieger also, yet again, dangled the possibility of a mayoral run and slammed purported mayoral candidate Mike Duggan as a “closet Republican” who’s probably not the right white person to try and run for the top job in a predominantly black city.
While I can appreciate Fieger’s willingness to speak more frankly about race than Duggan–a Livonia transplant who essentially tried to pretend that he didn’t even know he was white last time the topic came up–I’m nonetheless curious about this notion that one of Detroit’s top priorities should be to get white people to move back and to figure out a way to install a white man in the Manoogian.
Panasonic has announced an update to its line of Toughbooks to include Intel’s new Ivy Bridge processors. The Toughbook CF-31 will be available in two configurations, Standard and Performance. The Performance model will come with a Core i5 3360M processor clocked at 2.8Ghz as well as AMD’s Radeon HD 7750M discrete GPU. The notebook can switch between the discrete graphics and Intel’s integrated HD 4000 GPU to balance power versus performance.
The Standard model comes with a Core i5 3320M clocked at 2.6Ghz but relies solely on Intel’s integrated GPU. The CF-31 also comes with low-voltage DDR3 RAM for power efficiency, and hard drives have seen a bump to 500GB as standard with 128/256GB SSD options. Battery life is rated for up to 14.5 hours, and you can purchase a secondary battery pack that will give you another 6.5 hours. Three USB 2.0 ports and a single USB 3.0 port can be found on the laptop, plus HDMI output and a serial port. A configuration slot gives you the option to include an additional LAN, FireWire, or modem ports.
The Toughbook CF-53, meanwhile, comes with a Core i5 3320M processor clocked at 2.6Ghz, Intel’s HD 4000 GPU, and the same 500GB hard drive, although this model has an option for a 512GB SSD. Panasonic say the battery life on the CF-53 l is good for up to 11 hours, and there’s an additional 9 cell battery that can be purchased. Better yet, there’s a Touchscreen model available that boasts 1,000 nits of brightness for outdoor productivity.
Panasonic say that the CF-31 models should be available in July, with the Standard model starting at €3,699 (~$4,600) excluding VAT. The CF-53 will also ship next month for a more reasonable €1,544 ($1,919) excluding VAT.
