Series 8 mimobots offer Jabba and Slave Leia

This may be the greatest day in history of themed flash drives. If you look back at every Star Wars movie made, one of the most iconic scenes is slave Princess Leia dressed up in that gold bikini in Return of the Jedi. That particular scene has been getting geeks fired up for decades. If you’re a fan of the Star Wars theme mimobot flash drives from mimoco, you want to check out this new series.

The latest series is the eighth in the Star Wars production run, and certainly the coolest is the Slave Leia version complete with bikini. The series also includes a Jabba the Hut, Admiral Akbar, and Luke Skywalker with blonde hair and robotic hand. Luke has been in more of these flash drive series than any other character.

The company is also offering an exclusive version in the series strictly at San Diego Comic-Con. That special edition is a Biker Scout from the forests of Endor. I will say Jabba is a bit too skinny in flash drive form while Leia is a bit too large. The special flash drives will be available in 8 GB to 64 GB capacities. There will only be 1000 of the Biker Scout units made.

Nexus 7 8GB coming to UK mid-July for £159, 16GB version arriving at retailers July 27th for £199

Nexus 7 8GB coming to UK midJuly for 159, 16GB version arriving at retailers July 27th for 199

We’ve just had word from ASUS that the 16GB variant of the Nexus 7 will arrive on UK shelves on July 27th — slightly later than the 8GB model, which will be sold exclusively through Google Play from mid-July. Brits are looking at £159 for the 8GB tablet and £199 for 16GB. The latter is actually shipping to big stores like PC World, Comet, Tesco and eBuyer around July 20th, so those who pre-order may end up signing for that Special Delivery even earlier.

Update: the 16GB slate will also be sold through Carphone Warehouse, either for the same price as above or free on a tethered contract (but check those sums before signing up, obviously). PR added.

Ex-CEO of T-Mobile USA Philipp Humm to join Vodafone

Yesterday, T-Mobile USA announced that its CEO Philipp Humm had suddenly resigned from the company. At the time, T-Mobile said Humm was leaving to spend more time with his family, but also mentioned that he would be pursuing a career outside of Deutsche Telekom. Reuters now reports that Humm has joined Vodafone to become the chief executive of northern and central Europe starting from October 1st.

Vodafone announced that it will be splitting its European dealings into two divisions, with one focused on northern and central Europe, and the other dealing with southern Europe. Paolo Bertoluzzo will be overseeing such markets as Italy, Greece, Portugal, and Spain, while Humm will be managing regions like the UK, Germany, and Turkey.

Humm oversaw the failed merger between T-Mobile USA and AT&T, a move that was blocked by the US government. T-Mobile USA, meanwhile, has been left without a CEO. COO Jim Alling will take over duties while the company searches for a suitable replacement.

Nintendo 3DS XL to get its own Circle Pad Pro this year

The original Nintendo 3DS has had its own Circle Pad Pro expansion for a while that makes gaming with a little console more comfortable and enjoyable. With the recent launch of the larger 3DS XL portable console, gamers might have been wondering when a larger Circle Pad Pro would be coming. If you’re the owner of one of the new 3DS XL portables, you’ll get your version this year.

Nintendo has announced the Circle Pad Pro expansion, and it attaches to the 3DS XL console and at the second circle pad to the mix. Nintendo was mum on the official launch date for the accessory only saying that it will come this year. I suspect the accessory will launch in time for the holiday shopping season.

Much like the Circle Pad accessory for the normal 3DS, the XL accessory will make the portable console more comfortable to hold in the hands and will make controlling your video game easier. There is no indication of how much the accessory might cost.

BT kicks off 330Mbps 'FTTP on Demand' trials, reveals pilot locations

Not everyone is apparently in love with British operator BT’s green boxes. Still, that isn’t stopping the company from serving up its high-fiber diet to those who want to have speedy Internet connections. For its latest project, BT’s Openreach division has started offering an “FTTP on Demand” program that provides fiber-to-the-premises at 330Mbps speeds to folks or businesses who order the service. The project will be done in phases at eight locations, starting with High Wycombe, Bristol South and St Agnes, Cornwall in July. Next up is Edinburgh’s Waverley exchange in September followed by Watford, Cardiff, Basingstoke and Manchester Central in 2013. Communications providers can decide to cover installation costs by absorbing a one-off charge, having higher monthly fees or passing the whole thing to the consumer. Want to gobble up more info about BT’s latest fiber-filled broadband service? Then check out the good, old PR after the break.

Vizio launches 58-inch Cinemawide 21:9 HDTV

One of the things I never like when I’m watching Blu-ray movies on my TV in the living room is the annoying black bars on the top and bottom of the screen. Hollywood movies are filmed in 2.35:1 aspect ratio, meaning you have black bars above and below the picture. Some TVs let you zoom in and eliminate those bars, but that can mess with your image quality. Vizio has a solution that has just launched.

Vizio has announced the launch of its new XVT Series Cinemawide LED Smart TV with Theater 3D. That is a long product name, but this is a very interesting TV with a 21:9 ultra-widescreen aspect ratio that is the first available in the United States. The wider aspect ratio means when you watch those Blu-ray movies, there are no black bars filling up the screen.

The resolution of the new TV is 2560 x 1080, and the TV uses Vizio’s Edge Lit Razor LED technology and smart dimming. The TV supports all the smart TV functionality you expect with apps for Netflix, Hulu Plus and lots more. The first model in the series be available is the XVT3D580CM 58-inch TV that will carry an MSRP of $2799. For a limited time, the TV is being offered for $2499 as an introductory price.

Google Glasses stunt demo dive video released

Google made keynote history at IO yesterday, skydiving Google Glasses into the venue with the help of a team of stunt bikers and rappellers, and now the company is sharing some behind-the-scenes details. Unsurprisingly, an extreme-sports demo like that requires some practice, and Google has released a video of some of the test jumps Project Glass accompanied, which you can see after the cut.

Despite suggestions otherwise, Google insists that all of the in-flight footage was recorded using Glass. “The higher fidelity footage was recorded locally on the device whereas the hangouts were live streamed at a much lower resolution because of the challenges of networking a skydiver inflight” Google co-founder Sergey Brin said. ”Because we were unable to get regular wifi (which is built into Glass) to work under those conditions, we had to use extra networking gear which was tethered via usb to the device.”

According to Brin, the company will be revealing more details about the stunt after the second Google IO keynote later on today, weather permitting. Google has already begun taking preorders for the Glasses, priced at $1,500 for developers attending IO, and with deliveries expected early next year.

If you’ve not watched the full, surprise keynote appearance of Google Glasses – complete with a jump from a blimp down onto the roof of the Moscone Center – then you can find the must-see video here.

Nokia Lumia 710 and 800 receiving Tango update

If you’re an owner of a Nokia Lumia 800 or 710, you’ll be happy to know that the long promised Tango update is now rolling out for your handsets. Nokia has taken to its Conversations blog to detail the various changes and features you’ll be seeing, which includes Tethering, flip-to-silence, and some fairly extensive camera modifications. The company is also keen to promote Play To, its DLNA sharing app which was recently released.

WiFi Tethering is as you would expect, enabling you to share your phone’s internet connection with up to five devices, while flip-to-silence will mute any incoming calls or alerts once you reposition the phone. The Camera Extras app includes Group Shot, which takes five photos and determines the best faces from the selection, while Action Shot serves as a burst mode, allowing you to choose the best photo from the handful that are taken. Self-Timer and Panorama mode are self-explanatory.

As mentioned above, Play To will allow you to stream video and music to other DLNA compatible devices, and there’s also a Contact Share feature that will let you send business cards using SMS. Nokia says that the Tango update will start rolling out to the handsets now through the end of July, and once you’ve upgraded you’ll have access to the new apps. If you want to check for the update you’ll need to plug your phone into a computer and fire up Zune, so hop to it.
