Ideum Platform and Pro touch tables bring on the slim

Multitouch table specialist Ideum has outed its latest finger-friendly Surface SUR40 rivals, dramatically slimming the 55-inch video furniture while simultaneously boosting power. The Platform touch table is a mere 2-inches thick, sitting on a slender central stand while still offering a larger surface than the SUR40, while the Pro touch table is chunkier but considerably more powerful, with a user-expandable HP workstation in the base.

The Ideum Platform runs an Intel Core i7 2720QM 2.2GHz processor with 8GB of RAM and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 1GB graphics. There are dual 256GB SSDs in RAID1 format, twin USB 2.0, twin HDMI (in/out), ethernet and a 3.5mm audio output, along with a pair of 10W speakers.

Meanwhile, the Ideum Pro uses its extra bulk to accommodate an Intel quadcore Core i7 2600 3.4GHz processor, with 8GB of RAM and NVIDIA Quadro 600 1GB professional graphics. It has dual 500GB RAID1 drives and the same connectivity, but steps up to twin 75W speakers.

Both use a Full HD screen with 500 cd/m2 brightness and recognition for over 40 simultaneous finger touches. Ideum offers various software tools for museums, businesses, schools and other clients to develop their own custom applications.

No word on pricing at this stage.

Netflix fires back in UK streaming war, says it has Fox TV shows too, plus Arrested Development

Just days after Lovefilm touted its TV and movie deal with 20th Century Fox, Netflix UK is promoting its own TV show additions from the studio, including an exclusive on The League. While we’re not sure how well a comedy about Fantasy (North American) Football will go over across the pond, it’s also adding Modern Family, Lie to Me, Sons of Anarchy and more, and points out it already has series like 24 and Prison Break that Lovefilm is just now adding. The highest profile piece however, is Netflix’s exclusive hold on a new season of the old Fox show Arrested Development, set to premiere in 2013. The press release with the full list is after the break, contrast and compare your options to see which streaming service (if either) is a good fit.

Qualcomm extends Vuforia augmented reality to the cloud

Remember Vuforia? Qualcomm’s augmented reality platform allows you to scan real world objects and create “interactive experiences” on your smartphone or tablet. The technology had its limitation though, only scanning photos against a local database of 80 images. Now Qualcomm has announced that by adding the cloud into the mix, so the platform can perform image recognition against over one million images.

That will make it much easier for developers and partners to use the platform, with American Apparal fully onboard with the program. The company demoed Vuforia at Uplinq 2012. The company has customized an app that would see customers scanning items on their smartphones to bring up the full details on the product, such as pricing and reviews. It would also lets customers buy products that they can’t find in the store.

American Apparel gave a little demo for us at the event, and everything seemed to work as advertised. The company says that what we saw was still a prototype, but that a full version “should be available soon.”

Knut can monitor just about anything

One of the things I like so much about Kickstarter is that you never know what kind of project will turn up. One of the most recent projects that caught my eye is the device called the Knut. This is a small battery-powered Wi-Fi enabled device that you can use for monitoring just about anything you can think of. It can be used to monitor environmental conditions in your home such as the temperature of various things and humidity.

It can also be used to monitor when something is open or closed such as a gun cabinet or liquor cabinet. The Knut is also able to monitor vibration and can be placed inside a box with something sensitive or fragile you might be shipping to monitor if the package is being treated appropriately. You can even use it to remind you to water plants.

The device is controlled by an app that would run on the smart phone or computer and receive the data the Wi-Fi enabled sensor spits out. The device will also e-mail the information to a specific e-mail address so you can check it without bothering with your phone. The user can control how frequently Knut checks sensors, with some sensors such as accelerometers and switches checked anytime they change. This project is seeking $25,000 and has so far racked up $39,834 with seven days to go before funding. It will cost you $80 or more to get one Knut sensor during the Kickstarter project. Delivery is estimated for September.
