‘Barter Kings’: Antonio Turns $50 Training Bat Into A Massive Blimp For Advertising (VIDEO)

On the latest episode of “Barter Kings” (Wed., 10 p.m. ET on A&E), the boys challenged one another to barter their way to the coolest items they can for their store’s fourth anniversary. Antonio certainly managed to pull off a big win, starting with a $50 training bat.

He traded his way up through a laptop, a surveillance system and ultimately a trailer. Now that would have been great for hauling boxes and equipment for the store, but he wasn’t done yet.

Instead, he took the trailer and offered it in exchange for a massive floating blimp. His idea was to use the blimp for advertising at the store. The retail value of the blimp is right around $3,500, making it not only a great tool for the store, but a massive profit on the trades.

Apple tipped to overhaul iTunes, improve sharing

Apple showed off a whole host of new features at WWDC 2012, but things have been quiet on the iTunes front. Bloomberg reports that Apple is busy preparing a major update to iTunes that will have deeper integration with iCloud and place an emphasis on sharing. Sources speaking to Bloomberg say that Apple recognizes that organizing the various content available from its services has become difficult, with iCloud integration hoping to fix that.

The biggest takeaway from the article is that Apple is planning to add a new sharing feature. Sources talking to Bloomberg indicate that Apple is negotiating with the record labels to allow users to send songs to each other and listen for free. The company has also been requesting additional photos and pictures of bands to expand on multimedia features in iTunes.

Interestingly, the record labels have been asking Apple to provide an unlimited music streaming subscription service similar to what Spotify offers, but one source believes Cupertino “isn’t likely to announce that type of service.” Bloomberg notes that Apple’s recent move to separate Podcasts from the main iTunes app on iDevices is part of the company’s shift to more organized content. Any changes that are made to iTunes will reportedly come towards the end of the year.

Regenerative medicine pioneer continues changing lives with first successful laryngotracheal implants

Regenerative medicine pioneer continues changing lives with first successful laryngotracheal implants

Dr. Paolo Macchiarini is no stranger to world firsts, and less than a year after performing a synthetic windpipe transplant, the Karolinska Institute Professor has coordinated no less than two successful transplants of synthetic sections of larynx. Amazingly, both patients were able to breathe and talk normally straight after surgery, the basic functions we take for granted that they either struggled with or were simply unable to do before. The implants consisted of personally designed synthetic scaffolds coated with the candidates’ own stem cells, so there’s neither the chance of rejection nor the burden of life-long immunosuppressant therapy. Despite the amazing feat, Dr. Macchiarini ain’t done yet, claiming this is the first of many steps towards building a synthetic, complete larynx — voice box and all. Jump past the break for the official PR issued by Harvard Bioscience, the company responsible for growing what’s in that tub.

Web Lab beta video teases launch

There is much more than meets the eye at the Google I/O Conference that happened yesterday morning, and when you strip away the fanfare with all the skydiving and bikers making their way to deliver Glass to the hands of Sergey, we are still left with more than enough substance. Having said that, the Chrome team has just released a video that teases the launch of Web Lab beta. There are not many details surrounding what Web Lab beta is all about, but it does seem as though Web Lab will be revealed via a bunch of experiments that are tipped to roll out sometime later this summer.

The installations will debut at the London Science Museum, or so it is implied, and from the video that you see above, chances are the Chrome team will leverage both the web as well as custom machinery in order to churn out customized works of art. Will these end up as valuable after the creators pass on? Only time will tell.

ADATA XPG SX910 SSDs feel the need for speed

We’ve seen SSD prices tumble down over the past year, but if you want the best performance possible you’ll still have to cough up a significant amount of cash. ADATA has a high-speed SSD that might take your fancy, the XPG SX910. The company says the SSD is 7% larger than drives that use a SandForce controller, and thanks to optimized firmware can hit 4k random read/write speeds of 50,000 and 85,000 IOPS.

The SATA III 6Gbit/s drive has sequential read and write speeds of 550 and 530MB/s respectively. There will be three capacities offered: 128GB, 256GB,. and 512GB. Whichever option you spring for, you can rest assured knowing that the drive is covered by a five-year warranty. Putting it in a desktop rather than your aging laptop? The company is throwing in a 3.5-inch adapter too, so you can slide it straight into your tower without any troubles.

The 128GB model will set you back $189.99, the 256GB runs $379.99, and the 512GB commands a high $749.99. ADATA say the drives are available now at various retailers across the United States and Canada, so start searching.
