LG Optimus Vu receives “Value Pack” Ice Cream Sandwich update in Korea

In May this year, we said that the Optimus Vu, a 5-inch device running Android, will be receiving Ice Cream Sandwich. We also mentioned that the device will get several additional features that will take advantage of the extra-wide dimensions of the phone. But apparently it took LG a month to fulfill its promise. Today, LG is announcing that the 5-inch “phablet” will be getting a “Value Pack” upgrade, finally bringing Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich to the device as well as a slew of LG-specific tweaks to its note taking features, UI 3.0 and Quick Voice search. You can also check out a quick demo of the said update here. Note that the demo is in Korean, so muster those words properly. The Optimus Vu was first launched in Korea in April this year. It’s most probably LG’s answer to Samsung’s Galaxy Note, although the former has still a long way to go to topple the latter’s success. Availability in the U.S. has yet to be announced.

Joe Peyronnin: "The Newsroom" and CNN

The Newsroom“, which premiered Sunday on HBO, was an overly dramatized attempt to decry the current state of the television news business. The program, which was filled with smart dialog, internal conflict and self-righteousness, was a bit misleading about what happens behind the scenes at a cable news network.

Nonetheless, Aaron Sorkin should be praised for raising some important questions about television news. However, on Wednesday’s CBS This Morning, Sorkin said, “News shows should be exempt from having to deliver ratings.” Really? If there were no news ratings how would media companies pay their news gathering expenses?

Global news organizations, such as ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN and Fox, each cost several hundred million dollars to operate per year. For example, the Fox News Channel invests around $700 million annually, surpassing CNN for the first time in 2010. CNN has about 46 news bureaus worldwide, while Fox News has fewer than 20.

Rip Cord lets you unbox devices in a snap

So you’re very excited to unbox that gift your friend gave you. You are even hoping that it’s a Samsung Galaxy S3, or perhaps the Nexus tablet that was just launched. However, the gift was tightly sealed with a packaging tape. “Nah, never mind breaking another fingernail, it will be all worth it,” you say to yourself as you skid your fingernail to the tape to break it loose. You open the box, and behold, it’s a shaving kit!

In a move to solve the nasty unboxing issue, designers created Rip Cord, it’s actually a spin-off of the classic packaging tape. Rip Cord has a small string running down the center of the tape. That means that you will only have to pull the string to slice the tape in half. Sounds easy doesn’t it? This does not only spare you from the waiting game of having to open the box, but it also leaves scissors, knives, keys, and yes your fingernails out of the picture. Rip Cord is still a concept, which means that pricing and availability is yet to be finalized.

Epic’s Cliff Bleszinski wants to have better Kinect

Game development genius Cliff Bleszinski, known colloquially as “Cliffy B,” has spoken out about his feelings on Microsoft’s motion-sensing peripheral. In a recent interview, he said, “There are not a lot of things that wound up in there. There’s one thing actually that you just reminded me of though, is that we are not supporting Kinect in Gears Judgment.”

“I like Kinect, I’ve been a fan of it, but I don’t think it has been fully realised as far as the potential of the device. Dance Central 3 looks great and all, but I’m curious how the ‘core’ games will work out,” he continued. The evolution of Kinect has certainly been interesting to watch. When it was first announced as Project Natal, Microsoft used a whole lot of lofty marketing language to describe it as the most revolutionary thing in gaming history.

And then, for the first year in its existence, Kinect was used as little more than just another version of the Wii Remote, with mini-games and corny gesture controls dominating the peripheral’s scope. Now, though, Kinect seems to finally be coming into its prime. Although it is a bit different than Microsoft’s initial vision of controller-free gaming, the device is finding its place in hardcore games.

Waldo Canyon Fire: Wildfire Victims Crowd Shelters As Fight Continues (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Fire crews fought to save the U.S. Air Force Academy and residents begged for information on the fate of their homes Wednesday after a night of terror sent thousands of people fleeing a raging Colorado Springs wildfire.

More than 30,000 have been displaced by the fire, including thousands who frantically packed up belongings Tuesday night after it barreled into neighborhoods in the foothills west and north of Colorado’s second-largest city. With flames looming overhead, they clogged roads shrouded in smoke and flying embers, their fear punctuated by explosions of bright orange flame that signaled yet another house had been claimed.
