Google includes Jelly Bean easter egg in Android 4.1: yes, it’s cute (video)

Google includes Jelly Bean easter egg in Android 41 yes, it's cute video

In Gingerbread, those tapping repeatedly on the version number with Android’s “Settings” menu were greeted with a picture of “zombie art” by Jack Larson. In Honeycomb, a bee found its buzz. In Ice Cream Sandwich, we saw an image of the Android robot dressed up in an Ice Cream Sandwich, which grows in size when you long-press it until it transforms into a Nyan Cat-style animation. Today, we grabbed hold of a Galaxy Nexus equipped with Jelly Bean (Android 4.1), and sure enough, the tradition continues. This time, we’re graced with a cutesy bean, and when long-pressed, you’re presented with a game that encourages you to flick candy around a gravity-less location… for eternity. Care to see for yourself? There’s a video just past the break.

[Thanks, Jarrett]

Facebook to speed up iPhone app, says report

The New York Times is reporting that Facebook’s app on the iPhone is slower than almost any of the other 499,999 apps available for the device. The publication cites the number of customer reviews in the App Store – 21,000 out of 38,000 – rating the app with a single star score. So the folks reportedly convinced two of Facebook’s engineers to speak about the social networking giant’s unreleased products. The engineers, who asked not to be named, allegedly said that Facebook has revamped its iOS app and that it’s geared for one thing which is speed.

Moreover, the said new app is reportedly built primarily using Objective-C, a programming language used to build iOS applications. The engineers said that the Facebook app is currently built using the web-based markup language HTML5. The New York Times said that they were able see the unreleased iPhone application and commented that it’s “blazing fast”. The two Facebook engineers added that the app is currently being tested by Facebook developers and is expected to arrive as an update this summer.

VeriFone’s mobile credit card reader comes to Android

After what one would assume was a successful launch on Android last month, VeriFone has decided to bring its mobile point-of-sale credit card swiper to Android phones. It marks the first truly established player in the retail point-of-sale world to launch a device for small businesses for the mobile Google platform and will compete directly with Square.

The new system, called SAIL, will however not go after anyone and everyone who thinks it’s cool to accept credit card payments. SAIL is aimed exclusively at real businesses that perform a significant amount of transactions every month. That’s because it charges a distinctly lower swipe fee but also makes users pay a monthly fee, making it a better choice only for those who will recoup those 15 extra dollars every month.

VeriFone is significantly well established in the world of retail credit card terminals and has grown very comfortable setting up monopolistic authority in some segments, like in-taxi payments. But these new rivals have forced it to get back on its feets and learn to be competitive again. Square, PayPal, and many others have stepped into the fray, revolutionizing payments in a way that has never been seen before.

BlueStacks brings Android apps to OS X, wolves planning a rest with some lambs

BlueStacks brings Android apps to OS X, wolves planning a rest with some lambs

BlueStacks is releasing the first public alpha of its Android App Player capable of running on OS X. The virtualization company’s software is powered by its Layercake technology and includes a bundle of apps from its various partners. CEO Rosen Sharma hopes the move will encourage developers to build “retina-friendly” apps for Google’s mobile OS that can then be sold to those on the other side of the technology divide. There’s a sign-up sheet for developers itchy to get their hands on the goods on the company’s website, but don’t expect a response right away — there’s still a few more days of Google I/O to go first.
