Samsung Music Hub launches on Galaxy S III stateside with free trial in tow

Samsung Music Hub launches on Galaxy S III stateside with free trial in tow

Samsung’s come a long way from the days of its first Galaxy S device. Relying back then, out of necessity, on third parties like 7Digital and Kobo to provide a white label content platform. Time, fortune and the popularity of its Android devices has changed the company’s tack and with the unveiling of the Galaxy S III, it’s heading for a streamlined user experience that integrates hardware with in-house software. Although Music Hub has already launched overseas in several European countries as part and parcel of its latest flagship, that service is now finally ready for primetime in the US.

Built upon the mSpot tech it acquired this past May, the company’s freemium service combines the best of both worlds, offering non-paying users access to a digital storefront loaded up with millions of tracks from all four major labels (and some indies, too), a web-based player, as well as the ability to store purchased music remotely and offline for “registered devices.” Whereas, the subscription version builds upon those gratis goods by adding personalized radio stations, free streaming and an iTunes-like “Scan & Match” feature to the mix for $10 monthly.

Ever cognizant of the already crowded digital music platforms provided by rivals, Samsung’s tricking out this stateside debut with some goodies for the curious: a 30-day trial and one free album of their choosing. It’s a nice incentive, for sure, but with so many already entrenched in the musical realms of rivals — iTunes, Google Play and Spotify, for starters — adoption of this new ecosystem’s going to be a hard sell indeed. Click on past the break for the lowdown on this me-too, mobile music offering.

PSA Apple to shut down iWorkcom beta today, iCloud now awaits you

In the months leading up to this very moment, we’ve seen Apple introduce a full set of new MacBook Airs and an extremely high-res Pro of its own — but today the company’s taking a slightly different route, shutting down its doc-sharing iWork.com for good. Not all is lost, however, as this a natural move from the Cupertino outfit to make an expected transition to a more iCloud-heavy ecosystem — a place where you’ll essentially be able to accomplish similar things. The good news is you still have the rest of the day to clean out your invisible locker and save your must-have documents, and in case you need help with that, Apple’s support page (linked below) will fill you in on all those step-by-steps.

Modern Warfare 3 DLC official details revealed

Yesterday, we took a gander at Modern Warfare 3′s DLC Map images, and today, here we are with the official nitty gritty on the Modern Warfare 3 DLC that will arrive next month. Sledgehammer Games’ Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Michael Condrey has shed more light on ‘Light ‘Em Up’ and ‘Special Delivery’ Spec Ops missions. First of all, would place the gamer in the timeline that is located right after Modern Warfare 3′s single-player campaign ends, where one will be able to check out a couple of SAS operatives storming an Eastern European stronghold in order to perform a delicate rescue operation on a teammate.

As for Special Delivery, this is one map that will bring you to a hydroelectric dam that is located at the base of a Chinese river (the Three Gorges project, perhaps?) in order to secure the life of a helicopter pilot in a sensitive rescue operation. Light ‘Em Up would also introduce a first into the game franchise via a fully pilotable vehicle in the form of the Little Bird helicopter that offers air support to the other player who has his or her feet firmly grounded. Co-op play had never been this fun, no?

Diablo 3 fan site gives free money with each passing week

Whoever said that there is no free lunch in this world? Diablo 3 fan site Diablo3.org is currently performing charity in a digital manner – and I am referring to the site practically giving away free money each week. Users are sent the relevant information each week on the method to end up as a contest winner, and most of the time, it would require one to post relevant information concerning Diablo 3 so that other users who are not as creative as you will be able to get through the more difficult bits of the game, and you are also free to contribute further tips on the phenomenally popular dungeon crawler. The prize money is rather small at just $50 weekly at this point in time, but at least you can have a nice meal with that kind of money still.

Diablo3.org mentioned, “We plan to increase the prize winnings month after month. Right now its at $50 a week, or $200 a month, but we hope to get the cash prize up to possibly even $1000 a week!” Well, what do you think of this particular model to beget more and more users to the fan site?

iPad mini cases appear with tiny tablet details

There’s been an abnormal amount of clues this season leading up to the idea that several new devices are coming from Apple, the iPad mini being one of the most-denied yet most-seen. What you’re about to witness here is a set of iPad mini cases, each of them appearing to come from Devicewear, a company that we’re pretty sure won’t be invited back to the Apple party any time soon should these renders be proven real. What they show is the iPad mini – or whatever it’ll end up being called in the end – complete with volume buttons, a back-facing camera and microphone, and the lovely new miniature dock connector for all to see.

This case is nothing too exciting on its own, but what you’ll see inside is a next-generation iPad that’s seemingly smaller than its predecessors. The front-facing render of the device does not seem as realistic as the back, on the other hand, appearing here to be more of a photoshop effort than anything. The back of the device though, again, looks to have many of the same features the iPad 3rd generation device does, including the ultra-thin profile the newest iPad works with like a champ.

The screen-lock is there, the volume buttons look fabulously black, and the back-facing camera once again appears without a flash. The lens for the camera does appear quite large, leading us to believe that it may indeed be working with the same technology that the iPhone 4S works with – great news for you iPad photo shooters out there. There’s also a top and back facing set of microphones for next-level noise cancellation.

The bottom of the device has the new dock connector we’ve been hearing so much about. This dock connector is much smaller than the current 30-pin port, this thusly making room for the speaker grilles to face downward rather than relatively backwards as the current model iPad does. Now we’ve just got to convince Apple to go all the way forwards somehow or another for some real front-facing entertainment action.

Check the timeline below for more iPad mini news bits to add it all up for yourself – with more on the way, to be sure!

Microsoft launches Outlook.com to challenge Gmail

Microsoft has launched Outlook.com, a new cloud-based email service to take on Gmail with integrated Skype video calling and social networking integration. Considerably more attractive – not to mention comprehensive – than Hotmail, which it replaces, Outlook.com supports easy access to attachment photo slideshows, integration with Office and SkyDrive, and support for Facebook Chat.

As you might expect, there’s also support to open, edit and share Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, and in fact those files can all be edited directly from the inbox. Facebook and LinkedIn contacts are automatically synchronized with the Outlook contacts.

Skype integration hasn’t been enabled yet – Microsoft describes the current service as a “preview” rather than the final release – but when it’s turned on it will allow for calls to Skype and Outlook users. Best of all, it won’t require Skype be installed on the system itself, working instead in the browser.

Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn content will be pulled into the sidebar, and as for the inbox itself, there’s support for categories, folders, and rules. There’s also ActiveSync support for using Outlook.com with mobile devices.

Outlook.com Introduction:

Hotmail users who want to switch to Outlook.com can do so by clicking “Upgrade” in the options menu, with their existing email address, password, contacts, old email, and rules unchanged; they’ll be able to send/receive email from their @hotmail.com or @msn.com or @live.com address, or indeed set up a new @outlook.com address.

Sony Xperia advance hits the FCC

A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet, and a smartphone by any other name would just be…er, as smart? I am not quite sure, but if you do follow what Sony Mobile offers closely ever since they broke off from the Sony Ericsson partnership, here we are with their latest candidate to go through the hallowed halls of the FCC – the Sony Xperia advance. It is also known as the ST27a if model numbers are your thing, while those living in North American would have realized that it has already undergone the FCC’s rigorous testing procedures under the guise of the Sony Xperia go.

The Sony Xperia go did hit several markets already, but Sony Mobile has largely remained silent as to when the Xperia advance will arrive Stateside as well as in Canada. One thing’s for sure – to see it pass through the FCC would probably be a pretty good indicator as to the actual release date. Those who are thinking or mulling over their decision as to whether to purchase a new handset from Sony, you might want to consider the Sony Xperia advance.
