New SKYFALL trailer: 007, guns, bombs and anticipation

The latest trailer for the upcoming James Bond film SKYFALL has been released, with as much moody lighting, gun fighting, nail biting, and henchman smiting as you’d expect from the blockbuster franchise. The 2m30 clip fleshes out a storyline that has been a source of huge rumor and intrigue over the past months, with 007 rising from the dead to take on another supervillain.

According to the trailer, 007 is believed deceased in the film after being taken out by a sniper – something of an occupational hazard, it seems. You can’t keep a super-spy down, however, and he’s soon back to hunt down a stolen list of undercover MI6 operatives.

New villain Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem) is also given more screen-time in the new trailer, rather than the altogether more moody first trailer, as is fellow villain (and love-interest) Sévérine (Bérénice Marlohe). Judi Dench returns to reprise the role of M.

As for tech and car fans, there’s no sign of the classic Aston Martin DB5 which we already know will be making a special appearance in the movie, but there is at least one trick gadget. New Q (Ben Whishaw) supplies the spy with a specially palm-coded Walther PPK 9mm short that can only be fired by Bond himself.

SKYFALL is expected to hit theaters on 26 October 2012. That’s coincidentally the 50th anniversary of first Bond film Dr. No.

Update: There’s also a new US-specific trailer which has a few different scenes to the International trailer above:

Hulu Plus app live on Apple TV

Hulu Plus app live on Apple TV

We haven’t seen any official information yet, but tipsters report and we’ve confirmed on our own that Hulu Plus is quietly rolling out to Apple TV set-top boxes this morning. It was on our hockey pucks when we turned them on, while reports on Twitter indicate losing the connection before the icon appeared once the box came back online. We’re checking it out now, and like Netflix, it allows users to pay for the service via iTunes if they choose. The menus and UI are all appropriately Apple TV styled, if you’re not seeing it yet on your box then it should probably be there after a reboot. Otherwise it’s the same old Hulu Plus, just (finally) on Apple TV without any hacks or redirects needed, any new users can snag a 1 week free trial by signing up on the website or through the device itself.

Update: We have official confirmation now, check the Hulu Blog for more information, or after the break for two quick demo videos.

[Thanks, Rune]

OUYA partners with Square Enix, names Final Fantasy III as launch title

OUYA partners with Square Enix, names Final Fantasy III as launch title

We’ve been saying for a while now that a large deal of the success of Kickstarter blockbuster OUYA will hinge on the console’s game selection. News just got a fair bit brighter on that front — particularly for RPG fans. The company announced via its Kickstarter page (as per usual) that it has partnered with Square Enix. The first fruits of that burgeoning relationship will be Final Fantasy III, making the game a launch title for the console. The company is promising that the title will be “updated to exploit OUYA’s high-definition resolution in glorious graphic detail” — and, as is OUYA’s M.O., players will be getting a free demo of the game. Oh, and for those keeping track, the product’s Kickstarter page is currently at a mind-boggling $5,820,345 with eight days to go.

PDGA Approved Disc Golf

Do you love playing golf? If you have answered in the affirmative, then here is the $99.95 PDGA Approved Disc Golf which might make you consider switching your favorite sport for something else, which will still involve getting a projectile sent into a hole, of course. We are talking about the PDGA Approved Disc Golf that was specially designed to meet the exacting standards determined by the Professional Disc Golf Association. This particular set will come with a couple of discs which will fade left or right for medium to long drives around obstacles, in addition to a quartet of discs that were specially designed to hold a straight line, and dropping to the target.

It will also be accompanied by a 52.5″ high target which has a seven-bar deflector, 14 deflecting chains, and a 24″-diameter scoring basket in order to comply with PDGA regulations. These discs themselves come with a contoured edge, uniform wall thickness, and concentric ring configuration so that one is able to enjoy the ideal grip and release the perfect flight. The target can easily be set up on its included base, and can be disassembled in a jiffy whenever you need to travel.

FreedomPop Reveals New WiMax iPod Touch Case, Sheds Light On Data Pricing Plans

FreedomPop iPod 4G case FRONT front and inside views

There’s been quite a little buzz building around FreedomPop thanks to its ambitious plans to provide freemium wireless Internet to everyone in the United States, not to mention its peculiar 4G-friendly iPhone cases.

As it turns out, that’s not all that the Niklas Zennstrom-backed company has been working on behind closed doors. FreedomPop has just announced that it plans to release another 4G-capable case — this time meant for use with the iPod Touch — and has already begun taking pre-orders for the $99 gadget.

“We’ve had thousands of inquiries,” FreedomPop marketing VP Tony Miller told me. “[The iPod case] was further down on the roadmap, but we had to push it up.”

Like the iPhone case (the “Freedom Sleeve”) before it, the 4G iPod Touch case is basically a WiMax mobile hotspot that’s been designed to wrap around a device instead of sit next to it. Your mileage with the thing is going to vary considering WiMax’s limited footprint, but the company plans to release an updated model compatible with Sprint’s new LTE network in due time. For now though, interested users are going to be in for a bit of a wait — Miller says that the iPod case should be in the wild within “two months at the latest” as actual production of the device hasn’t yet begun.

That said, the company’s marketing machine has already kicked into high gear — the company has said that the new case effectively turns an iPod into an iPhone. It’s a juicy message for sure, not one that’s true right out of the gate as users will have to get set up with a VoIP service like Skype to make the phone bit a reality. FreedomPop has cryptically hinted that the ability to make voice calls may soon be folded into its wireless service though, so that statement may ring truer down the line.

If this iPod case concept sounds eerily familiar, it’s because Sprint essentially did the exact same thing about two years ago with the ZTE-made Peel. Well before Sprint finagled a deal to sell the iPhone, interested consumers could pick one up and shell out $29.99/month for 1GB of 3G data. Despite the obvious similarities — I’m told that ZTE may be on deck to produce FreedomPop’s iPod case — Miller claims that no one on the team had heard of the Peel until they began doing research into the feasibility of such a product.

FreedomPop’s twist on the device (if you haven’t yet heard) on the other hand grants users 500MB of free monthly Internet access, as well as some bonuses for playing nice with others. As I’ve mentioned before, FreedomPop is really trying to play up the social component of its freemium Internet service — users can share portions of their data allotments with each other, and can score an additional 10MB for each new user they refer to the service.

Miller also let slip a few details on the sorts of rates the company will offer for users who need more than 500MB/month. Those in need of just a little more bandwidth per month can pay the normal $10 for each additional gigabyte, but the company also plans to offer low-cost data plans for really heavy users. Miller wouldn’t break down the tiers specifically (mostly because the company hasn’t quite ironed them all out yet), but revealed that the company plans to run with an aggressive pricing model — FreedomPop’s data plans are said to cost between 20% and 50% less than similar data buckets from major carriers. Take the near-standard $50 for 5GB bucket for example: under FreedomPop’s purview, that same chunk of data access would users a relatively scant $25 to $40.

If it seems like FreedomPop is spending too much time and effort focusing on iOS devices, fear not — Miller also confirmed that Android is “on the roadmap,” though exactly how far down that is on the company’s list of things to do is still unclear. Then again, this iPod case wasn’t supposed to happen for a while, so who knows how long it’ll be before the first Android-friendly FreedomPop cases hit the streets.

Freedom Pop 4G hotspot case turns iPod Touch into a near-iPhone

Freedom is coming out with a 4G case that practically turns an iPod Touch (gen 4) into an iPhone. It works by having a 4G LTE (Sprint Network, with WiMax and 3G fallback, I’m told) functionality directly in the case, which is also a WIFI hotspot. The iPod can then access the internet over the WiFi connection. Interestingly, Freedom Pop made a name for themselves by coming up with the same concept for iPhone 4/4S first. In my opinion, the iPod version adds much more value because iPods don’t have a cellular connection to start with. (more…)

eSSage Gives You a Massage, Without the Masseuse

Nothing beats getting a massage after a long, hard day at work. But if you’re too beat to even drive to your favorite spa or call for home service, then there’s another alternative (provided it gets manufactured, that is): the eSSage.

eSSageIt might not be the first time someone thought about making a self-massaging suit so that you can, well, give yourself a massage, but it’s one of the concepts that pretty well thought-out. It’s controlled remotely via an Android or iOS app, where you can point your stylus (or finger) on the nodes that you want to work on.

You can also have someone else “do” the massage for you by passing on the app and stylus.

The Redesigned Dodocase Is Stronger, Better Suited For The New iPad

dodocase-1-2

The Doodcase has long been one of TechCrunch’s favorite iPad cases. However, the case’s secret sauce, a handmade bamboo frame, is infamous for cracking on the corners. It’s a common complaint. Dodocase was clearly listening and just released a redesigned case with stronger corners and new features that includes a slightly deeper design to better fit the new iPad.

Dodocase claims this design will allow the new case to withstand a drop onto the corner from about 2.5 feet. The redesign employs a reinforced miter joint (top in the images) rather than a finger joint (bottom in the images) in the original design. This construction is better suited for use with bamboo, which can easily split down the culm’s fibers when thinly cut. But now, with the new construction, the Dodocase’s corners should not crack or splinter nearly as easily.

The redesigned case also brings more noticable changes. There’s now a hole in the back for the iPad’s camera. A little wooden faux button up top to engage the iPad’s lock button when pressed. Finally, the new case is a touch thicker, allowing it to better hold the thicker new iPad.

The new case is available starting today. I’ve used one for the last week and can confirm the case is much improved and maintains its trademark charm. I love this case.
