Toshiba slips into the red as latest earnings reveal $153 million loss

Toshiba slips into the red as it records a $153 million loss

Toshiba’s most recent fiscal results (the first of its 2012 financial year) show that while the company pulled in $16 billion in turnover, it slumped to a $154 million loss for the last three months. While its “social infrastructure” unit (power plants, LED light bulbs and radiation detectors) generated a $107 million profit, the consumer electronics and white-goods sectors continued to lose sales. The company attributes the loss to further restructuring costs as well as pointing an accusatory digit toward the European financial crisis and concerns about power generation capacity in Japan. Despite the gloom, the company says that it still expects to hit a target of $81 billion turnover and $3.8 billion profit before March 2013.

Pantech Renue arrives at AT&T

AT&T has a spanking new smartphone for the masses, especially those with a heart for the environment. We are talking about the Pantech Renue, which is made out of 67% recyclable components, now how about that? It will not just decompose by itself if you leave it in the box though, far from it. The Pantech Renue was specially designed to be able to withstand everyday wear and tear, and the best thing about this smartphone would be the relatively cheap price of just $69.99 a pop – albeit with a new 2-year contract and after a mail-in rebate, of course.

The Pantech Renue is first and foremost, a messaging smartphone thanks to the integrated physical QWERTY keyboard, while managing to maintain a compact design. The packaging itself is made from 95% recycled paper and printed using non-POV soy ink. Other hardware specifications include a 3.2” capacitive touchscreen display, the Qualcomm Brew Mobile Platform, a 3-megapixel camera with video recording capability, as well as one-touch access to social media, messaging, music, pictures and games. Nexus 7 accessories leaked, incoming dock

Asus’ Nexus 7, the Google tablet that has certainly made its fair share of waves over the past few weeks, looks set to be on the receiving end of its fair share of accessories, no thanks to a leak of presentation files that have somehow managed to sneak and make a way to Nordic Hardware. Nordic Hardware, not wanting to be selfish, decided to share this bit of news with the rest of the world, and some of the accessories include the already known Smart Case clone, a $20 Travel Cover which has already started to lurk around Asus and Google websites. Not only that, there is also a higher class leather Premium Cover version that will more or less cost double the amount. Why not throw in a cradle into the set as well? This $50 Nexus Dock sports an extremely simple wedge design and has all the relevant audio outputs. Bear in mind that these should arrive sometime later next month as summer winds down to make way for autumn.

Panasonic’s 2013 Q1: things are looking up with a $164 million profit

Panasonic's

Panasonic’s financial year runs from summer to summer, so its first-quarter results for 2013 just hit the wire. The figures proudly show that the company has managed to turn around the losses it suffered so badly in the previous period — with $23 billion in turnover generating a tidy profit of $164 million. While sales dropped by six percent compared to the first three months of the year, it’s been reducing fixed costs and restructuring each segment of the business to ensure a return to profit making despite the worsening financial crisis in Europe. The company’s even been able to stick some cash into the savings account, tucking $16.6 million into the piggy bank for a rainy day.

Apple sold 250 million iPhones to date

iPhone 4S ReviewIt took Apple just 5 years to move a whopping 250 million iPhones around the world, clearly happy that they are residing in the pockets of many people in the streets regardless of age, religion, culture or creed – instead of languishing on the store shelves like other devices from various manufacturers. This is no mean feat, considering how Apple never really had any experience with the smartphone market in the first place. As for the amount of moolah that was generated for Apple by the iPhone since 2007, we are talking about over $150 billion dollars in terms of sales, and this figure had certainly gone a long way in helping Apple being the most valuable company in the world.

Apple’s internal statistics point towards 244.3 million iPhones being sold through June 30, and when you break that down into more manageable figures, it would translate to 2 million phones a week in last quarter. When you compare that to the first quarter of the year, it is slightly less, as that was boom time for the iPhone at 2.7 million phones a week. Many people are expecting Apple to release a next generation iPhone later this October, so we could possibly be witness to Apple hitting sales figures of more than 50 million iPhones in the 4th quarter of 2012.

Huawei Ascend G 302D arrives in FCC documents

Here is yet another smartphone to have arrived on the FCC’s doorsteps – the Huawei Ascend G 302D. The “G” here signifies “Gold”, and it is rather strange to have something denoted as a premium precious metal being relegated to the budget range of smartphones. Ah well, I guess it is not too big of an issue to grapple with after all, as there are far more baffling things on earth to figure out. Just what else have we managed to uncover about the Huawei Ascend G 302D by the FCC? For starters, this will most probably be a 4″ device, and it should more or less run on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, considering how the capacitive keys do seem to point in that particular direction.

The manual for the Huawei Ascend G 302D is also thrown into the mix, where it does detail some bit of Radio Frequency testing, showing off two different capacity batteries – 1,350mAh and 1,500mAh, which will be able to support Bluetooth, Wi-Fi b/g/n and AT&T-compatible radios. What do you think of such a smartphone?

Samsung P10 tablet in the works, has 2,560 x 1,600 pixel 11.8-inch display?

Apple and Samsung are currently slugging it out in the court just like how Bane and Batman battled, and will Apple be Samsung’s reckoning? Who knows? All we know is, Samsung has a keen eye for the future of the tablet market, and their tablet roadmap pointed towards a new 11.8-inch tablet that is slated for a release this year, where it has been slapped with a P10 nickname. The display is what we are interested in, where it sports a resolution count of 2,560 x 1,600 pixels, which are massive – clearly placing it in the realm of Retina-like Display crowds. Connectivity options on the Samsung P10 tablet include Wi-Fi and LTE, but apart from that, details are as scarce as money in Greece’s pocket. We are interested to know what Samsung’s plans for the tablet market are though, especially when there is an upcoming event in New York City in a fortnight’s time, not to mention IFA happening later in the month.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus sales to continue despite trial

Apple and Samsung have come to a head and locked horns good and proper in the courtroom, and there are plenty of lawsuits and injunctions being thrown about from left to right and to one another. Well, one development that should be duly taken note of would be the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit extending the temporary stay of Judge Lucy Koh’s preliminary injunction against the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Basically, what we are saying is this – the Samsung Galaxy Nexus can still be sold by Samsung in the US without any steps taken to halt sales of its nature. Samsung had also put in an expedited appeal that will happen this coming August 20th, where a decision is expected to be announced in due course of time.

According to Judge Lucy Koh, Apple had presented a “plausible theory” of irreparable harm and long-term loss of market share from the alleged infringement by Samsung, but Samsung sees things differently since they say that Siri is definitely different from the unified search that is covered in the 604 patent, meaning that particular use of the patent is invalid has been interpreted incorrectly.
