Google Nexus 7 overclocked with custom kernel

Asus is the manufacturer of the highly sought after Google Nexus 7 tablet, where it already comes with a rather zippy NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor, although it must be noted that this particular version of the Tegra 3 comes with just a clock speed of 1.2GHz, which is clearly slower that other tablets that feature the faster 1.6GHz clock speed. Well, there is nothing quite like fixing things yourself, which is why the introduction of a custom kernel to the Google Nexus 7 would result in it zipping along rather nicely at 1.6GHz.

According to Xda-developer forum member morfic, his version of DerKernel Trinity for the Google Nexus 7 is a custom kernel which will allow you to overclock your 7″ tablet to run in a more zippy manner, although I do wonder whether that is really necessary unless you are going to perform plenty of processor intensive tasks on your Google Nexus 7. Those who love tinkering around and experimenting would definitely not mind giving this particular custom kernel a go, but you ought to take note that things can go wrong with such customized kernels, so do perform a backup of all your important data beforehand!

Bing search lets you tag Facebook friends, forces them to Google ‘Bing’

Bing search lets you tag Facebook friends, forces them to Google 'Bing'

Microsoft has already made its “decision” engine get all buddy-buddy with Facebook and Twitter, but now it’s taking the integration one step further. You’ll now actually be able to tag your friends in searches. Why, pray tell, would you need to do such a thing? Perhaps you’ve got a buddy who grew up in Paris and need suggestions for where to eat while you’re visiting. Or maybe you’ve spotted an awesome hiking trail and want others to tag along. Just enter the question in the Bing side bar then tag the appropriate people. The search will show up on your timeline and others can pitch in. Of course, you could always just ask these same people via Facebook message, text or (gasp!) in person. But why would you want to simplify matters? Check out the source for more info and the video after the break.

Nexus 7 dock and covers leak, promise high style in small sizes (update: source goes down)

Nexus 7 dock and covers leak, promise high style in small sizes

There have been teases here and there that Google’s Nexus 7 was going to get a full, official accessory treatment from ASUS, but actual details have been scarce. Consider ASUS’ cover blown, almost literally. Presentation files finding their way to Nordic Hardware show the known Smart Case-like, $20 Travel Cover that’s already lurking on the ASUS and Google websites, but they also spoil a leather Premium Cover that will reportedly cost $40. As for a cradle to round out the set? While the company had previously confirmed that a dock was coming, we’re now getting a glimpse of the $50 Nexus Dock’s super-simple wedge design and audio output. With the exception of the Travel Cover, the accessory bonanza is pegged by the slides as arriving in late August — just in time for that last-gasp summer vacation.

Update: Nordic Hardware has since taken down its original post “at the request” of an unnamed party.

LG Electronics announce 3D-enabled game apps for the LG Cinema 3D Smart TV

The TV in your living room has definitely evolved over time, moving on from black and white to color, and then making the jump to High Definition. Well, what is the next evolutionary step? LG Electronics is looking at the ability for home viewers to be able to enjoy their favorite games on the LG Cinema 3D Smart TV, and in eye-popping 3D glory, to boot. Previously, a bunch of these 3D-enabled game apps were available only on compatible smartphones and tablets via the Apple App Store and Google Play, not to mention that they were only playable in 2D. LG Electronics decided to ramp up the fun factor by hand picking these titles specially for their 3D playability.

Among the titles selected are Air Penguin, which made it to the top of the list of downloaded game apps in the US, in addition to 18 other countries in 2011, while Frisbee Forever, Burn The City, Downhill Bowling 2 and Diversion from Unity Technology also made the list. According to Havis Kwon, President and CEO of LG Home Entertainment Company, “We are excited to be able to bring 3D gaming to Smart TVs for the first time so family members can enjoy the immersive fun together. With the arrival of established games as well as original titles developed exclusively for LG CINEMA 3D Smart TV, we are fulfilling our commitment to realizing the potential of Smart TV as a genuine 3D gaming platform. LG CINEMA 3D Smart TV owners will be amazed as they become fully engrossed in the large screen, 3D environments of their favorite games, and at how easy it is to be in control with the Magic Remote.” [Press Release]

Twitter suspends Guy Adams’ account due to NBC tweet

Twitter logoTwitter and NBC Universal have decided to suspend a British reporter’s Twitter account after the tweets of Guy Adams, the Los Angeles correspondent for The Independent which is based in London, sent out a tweet last Friday that detailed NBC Olympics President Gary Zenkel’s email address. This was not done out of a mischievous intent, as he was venting his frustration (among a fair number of other Twitter users in the US) who were upset at the London Olympics’ opening ceremony being shown on tape delay so that it can coincide with evening prime-time in the US.

Adams’ “offending” tweet was, “The man responsible for NBC pretending the Olympics haven’t started yet is Gary Zenkel. Tell him what u think! Email: Gary.zenkel@nbcuni.com.” As a result, Adams’ Twitter account and his tweets were rendered invisible, but nature always has a strange sense of humor – the incident actually exploded across the Internet on Monday, where “Guy Adams” ended up as a worldwide trending topic on Twitter.

Asus Tablet 810 spotted at the FCC

Another day, another tablet device is released, but before such a thing can happen, said tablet will need to go through the hallways of the FCC. Well, we are pleased to say that the Asus Tablet 810 has just arrived at the FCC, where it will run on the Windows 8 operating system, now how about that? At least this is not yet another one of those zillions of tablets that run on the Android platform. The Asus Tablet 810 with Windows 8 certainly did not waste too much time to drop by at the FCC, considering how its younger sibling, the Asus Tablet 600 arrived just a couple of days before.

If you happen to have a penchant for model numbers, then the Asus Tablet 810 will be known as the TF810C, and its filing does not reveal too much information to us other than it being a WiFi-only device that has the relevant and expected NFC connectivity to deliver quick peripheral synchronization. It will come with an 11.6″ form factor, and we do look forward to this Asus tablet considering how the company more or less scored gold with another tablet – the Google Nexus 7.

Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition co-op offers cross-platform play support

Baldur's Gate Enhanced EditionJust a few days ago, we took a closer look at Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition, where additional details concerning the upcoming game (we are looking at a September 18th date over here) were revealed, helping stoke the excitement factor even further. Well, here is some more bit of news that would certainly have all of you sociable gamers hopping around like a Duracell bunny – Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition’s creative director Trent Oster has just confirmed that this particular game will come with cross-platform co-op.

Oster’s personal Twitter feed confirmed, “Bgee will have co-op multiplayer and will work across platforms. iPad can play with Android, Mac and PC. One happy gaming family.” This sounds like pure gold and magic, where the online cross-platform support will play nice regardless of where you are around the world, and across a wide range of formats to boot. In order to pair players together, Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition will rely on a matchmaking system (which hopefully, will not be broken in any way).
