Interim CEO Ross Levinsohn steps down from Yahoo

Ross Levinsohn, the interim CEO of Yahoo, has reportedly left the Internet giant after losing to former Google executive and now newly appointed CEO Marissa Mayer. Levinsohn, who joined Yahoo in 2010 serving as Executive Vice President of Americas, was named interim CEO this year after Scott Thompson was fired for allegedly forging his resume. According to AllThingsD, Levinsohn and Mayer may have been negotiating his departure for several days now. Marissa Mayer reportedly sent an email statement confirming Levinsohn’s departure. Mayer said that Levinsohn has been an important and powerful contributor at Yahoo since he joined in 2010.

“During May and June, Ross stepped into an incredibly tough role as interim CEO and did a terrific job – he really helped keep the company moving, closed important deals, and assembled a very talented team. I am very grateful to Ross for his leadership and work throughout his tenure at Yahoo. His contributions will be missed,” Mayer added. “Yahoo is an amazing brand and company, and I leave knowing we did all we could to help inform and entertain more than 700 million users each month. Leading this company has been one of the best experiences of my career, but it is time for me to look for the next challenge,” Levinsohn said.

London 2012 Olympics
If TV broadcast tape delay and streaming restricted to pay-TV subscribers isn’t entirely ruining your experience, the first week of the 2012 Games has started off with a bang. There’s plenty of sporting action to go around and the world records have already started falling. Live coverage is early in the day for US time zones, while NBC is keeping some of the more anticipated events off TV and only online until its prime time airing later.

For viewers we have a few tips, like using Google to search Olympics + [sport] to get a minute by minute schedule of the events in your local time so you don’t miss ’em on the live stream. Also, check your cable or satellite provider, most have expanded options to help you catch all the sports, while Cox and DirecTV are doing the multiview thing, Comcast has added Olympics specifics filters to its remote apps, and Time Warner Cable has added more channels to its streaming iPad app.

Total Recall (Mind-Bending Edition)
The Paul Verhoeven / Arnold Schwarzenegger classic is back on Blu-ray and should be better looking this time around. So, why opt for this one instead of a ticket to the remake this weekend? Beyond the obvious reasons, it’s also cheaper, currently listed at $7.99 on Amazon.
($7.99 on Amazon)

NFL Preseason
It’s finally time for football again, and while it’s just preseason action, we’ll be ready to see the Saints take on the Cardinals Sunday night from Canton Ohio. Also worth checking out, the HOF induction ceremony Saturday night as DB Jack Butler, C Dermontti Dawson, DE Chris Doleman, DT Cortez Kennedy, RB Curtis Martin and T Willie Roaf take their place among the other all-time greats.

Capcom posts strong financial report for Q1 2012

Capcom is looking pretty good at the end of its first quarter for the year, thanks in no small part to the success of Dragon’s Dogma. We’ve known for a while that Dragon’s Dogma has passed 1 million units shipped, but today Capcom reiterated that figure – along with the intention of turning Dragon’s Dogma into a series – in its quarterly report. Total Dragon’s Dogma shipments currently sit at 1.05 million, with the game doing particularly well in Japan.

Overall, Capcom’s net sales increased 55.8% year-over-year, settling at ¥18.62 billion ($238 million). Operating income came in at ¥2.66 billion ($34.03 million) for the period ending June 30, climbing 244.4% year-over-year. Finally, net profits landed at ¥1.32 billion ($16.9 million), which is a whopping 290.2% increase over Q1 2011.

So Capcom is looking pretty good all around heading into its Q2, but strangely enough, some of thanks for the successful quarter belongs to Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. Despite leaving some critics underwhelmed, the game has managed to ship 450,000 copies so far, so it seems that fans don’t care all that much about poor review scores in this instance. Dragon’s Dogma and Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City are the only titles listed as “major” releases for the 3-month period, so Capcom apparently made a significant portion of its revenue from just those two last quarter. Capcom also says its social efforts, such as The Smurfs’ Village and Snoopy’s Street Fair, brought in a steady stream of revenue throughout Q1.

We’re indifferent when it comes to Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, but it’s good to see that Dragon’s Dogma is exceeding expectations (at least in Japan). It was a solid open-world RPG title that wasn’t without its flaws, but luckily it sold well enough to warrant a sequel, so Capcom will have a chance to fix those issues with upcoming titles in the series. It’ll be exciting to see where the franchise goes next, and it just goes to show that not all gamers are opposed to giving a new IP a go this late in the generation. Let’s hope that Capcom gives the franchise the attention it deserves and transforms it from something good into something excellent.

AT&T’s Eco-rating makes in-store debut alongside Pantech Renue

AT&T's Eco-rating makes in-store debut alongside Pantech Renue

In February, at Mobile World Congress, AT&T announced a new program that would rate its various devices on their environmental-friendliness. Now that system is finally getting its in-store debut alongside the impressively green Pantech Renue. The Eco-ratings, which grade devices based on their use of recycled materials and toxic metals such as mercury and lead will give those more concerned with protecting the Earth than having the latest and greatest tech an easy way to determine the device that’s right for them. Pantech for its part hopes the Renue, with its 67-percent recycled components and Energy Star-compliant charger will draw at least a few interested parties who wander in to AT&Ts shops. The rugged messaging device doesn’t rock Jelly Bean, or any other smartphone OS for that matter, but it does have a slide out QWERTY keyboard for SMS addicts. Check out the video and PR after the break for more details.

What’s The One Gadget, Tool or Utensil You Absolutely Can’t Live Without in the Kitchen [Chatroom]

It’s close to dinner time and I have food on the brain. This makes me wonder: for those of you who spend a lot of time in the kitchen (actually cooking food, that is), what is the most indispensable tool you own? Is it a simple utensil like a knife? Or is it something more gadgety, like a digital thermometer? Let’s talk cooking gear. More »

Google Glass Explorers hangouts create chaos

This week the folks in charge of social media surrounding the Google Project Glass hardware on order right this second have created a set of Hangouts for the betterment of the project – but it didn’t turn out all that great this afternoon. The first set of Google Glass Explorers hangouts ended in mass confusion and hopeful users ending up finding out little, if anything, about Google Glass that they didn’t already know. Google Glass product manager Steve Lee and community manager Sarah Price hoped to hear feedback and ideas throughout the day.

To hear feedback from users of the device which isn’t actually on the market yet, Lee and Price noted that they’d be “hopping into as many hangouts as possible.” Participants in the event were encouraged to start their own hangouts and get to chatting about Google Glass as soon and as much as possible. The result, without much if any direction, was a collection of video chats with users saying things like “what are we supposed to be doing here?”

This is the first event of many, we expect, from the Explorers project we saw launched last week. In-depth talks and informative releases will be appearing soon with what we must expect will be more direction than we’ve seen this afternoon. People invited to the Explorers club were either Google I/O participants or people who took the opportunity to purchase the early release of Google Glass that will be sent out at the start of 2013.

At the moment we’ve only to wait for more information on the project as Google distributes it. When the Google Glass units are distributed early next year, developers as well as hardcore Google lovers will be able to send out information on their own, and the final consumer-ready version will be prepped before the end of 2013 – or so tips have tipped.

Android U.S market share declines, according to research

Global technology research firm Strategy Analytics has published a report today revealing that Android’s U.S. market share has lost its ground to iOS, falling from 60 percent in the second quarter of 2011 to 56 percent in Q2 this year. Albeit Android continues to be the number one platform in the U.S. in terms of volume, its market share has reportedly declined. Apple’s U.S market share, on the other hand, has grown up to ten points from 23 percent in the second quarter of 2011 to 33 percent in the second quarter of this year.

Additionally, Strategy Analytics also added that total smartphone shipments went down by 5 percent per annum, giving way to over 23.8 million units (from 25.2 million) in the U.S. during the second quarter of 2012. The firm notes that this is one of the slowest growth rates in the U.S. smartphone market. With rumors of an iPhone 5 expected to arrive later this year, it will be interesting to see how Android will manage to keep its disposition in the U.S. market. Meanwhile, the research also shows RIM and its BlackBerry OS dropping from 11 percent to 7 percent over the past year. Strategy Analytics says that this is RIM’s lowest level in history.

iPhone September 12 event looks likely as clues stack up

Over the past week we’ve seen a giant amount of clues pointing toward a brand new iPhone appearing very soon, with several tips popping up today with the date September 12th attached to them. The newest of these is Jim Dalrymple of The Loop’s one-word confirmation of the rumor: “yep” following in the footsteps of accuracy in the past, here affirming also that the phone will very likely be released on September 21st, nine days after the event. This joins news of an iPad mini / iPad 4th gen event that will likely take place at an entirely different time entirely – perhaps November, perhaps never.

This morning we’ve also heard quite a bit from Johnathan Ive, Apple’s design chief, on how the company does not care about money. This, he added, almost resulted in the death of the iPhone before it even began. Also while we’re prepping for the next-generation smartphone, Apple and Samsung are at war over who ripped off whose designs for their ultra-popular handheld lineups.

The confirmation of the September 12th event seen above comes from the first person to mention that date, complete with the addition of said iPad mini – September it is said iMore. There’s a video out there today with a person bringing their own hands-on to the iPhone 5 or whatever you want to call it. And don’t forget the photo shoot this device was a part of this past weekend as well. Things are looking mighty similar.

Have a peek at our timeline below as well for more iPhone news as it begins to stack up quicker and quicker. We’re expecting a new iPhone SOON, perhaps not exactly on the dates specified above, but your guess is as good as ours. Note that this next-generation iPhone is very likely set to have a smaller dock connector, a headphone jack at the bottom of its casing, and a 4-inch display as well. Stay tuned for the epic reveal!

Thermaltake cures clamminess with $80 Cyclone Edition gaming mouse

Thermaltake cures clamminess with $80 Cyclone Edition gaming mouse

Just when we needed a modern-day equivalent of sailing down the Nile while being fanned by Assyrian slaves, we get this: the Black Element Cyclone Edition gaming mouse, which has a 6,000 rpm rotor directed right at the point where slick skin meets plastic. Pictures of the device have been floating around the web for a while, but we’ve just heard from its creators — TT eSports, Thermaltake‘s sub-brand for peripherals — that it’ll be available in US stores any day now (or officially, “in August”) priced at $80. The patent pending design promises to keep noise down to a sub-environmental 21.7dB, while delivering an airflow of 2.6 cubic feet per minute — which, if you’re lucky, should be enough to not only keep your digits dry but also reach your palm. The fan can alternatively be removed, in which case you’ll be left with a 6,500 dpi laser sensor, an adjustable weight of up to 22.5 grams, “military-grade” grip coating and an abundance of natural oils.
