When the MacBook Pro with Retina display is in the game, Apple’s “regular” Pros may seem a bit like also-rans. After all, why would you choose them when you could get a brilliant 15-inch 2,880 x 1,800 IPS panel and a Core i7 Ivy Bridge processor? Well, price, for one thing. While we walked away from our Retina MBP review mighty impressed, that model starts at $2,199. The latest crop of Pros, meanwhile, keep the same pricing scheme as last year’s models ($1,199 and up), but step up to Intel’s third-generation Ivy Bridge processors. We took the entry-level 13-incher for a spin to get a feel for how the dual-core Core i5 CPU, 4GB of RAM and Intel HD Graphics 4000 stack up to the competition. Read on to see how it fared.

Remember the ARCHOS 97 Carbon tablet that we introduced earlier this month? Well, after visiting the FCC, it looks like the entry-level tablet is now up for grabs at the ARCHOS store. It features a 9.7” 1024 x 768 multitouch display, a 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, microSD card slot (up to 32GB), Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, Micro USB port, USB 2.0 port, 3.5mm audio jack, HDMI output, WiFi, 0.3-megapixel front facing camera, 2-megapixel rear camera, microphone and G-sensor.
The ARCHOS 97 Carbon is available now and will set you back $249.99. Personally I haven’t given it a go, but for the same price you can get the very capable Google Nexus 7 which despite having a smaller screen, has a better processor, higher resolution display and runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

A Japanese company called Suidobashi Heavy Industries recently revealed its 13-foot mech robot named Kuratas. Kuratas is the brainchild of artist Kogoro Kurata and robotics researcher Wataru Yoshizaki. Kuratas can be controlled in three ways – either through a controller, a master slave, or an iPhone. The robot runs on an operating system called V-Sido and it is outfitted with a launcher and a twin Gatling gun. To operate the robot’s heavy artillery, the user only needs to smile to fire 6,000 bullets per minute.
Sounds too good to be true doesn’t it? Apparently while we have pretty much covered almost every robot around, Kuratas appears to be a concept to us for now. But I have to say that the robot looks very surreal and realistic, judging from the video above. The Kuratas mech robot was recently showcased at the Wonder Festival in Chiba, Tokyo. Suidobashi Heavy Industries is reportedly planning to mass produce Kuratas in the future, but I reckon that you take that with a grain of salt in hand.

Telkomsel’s new unlimited messaging plan gives Indonesians an alternative to BBM
Posted in: Today's ChiliAs far as monopolies go, word on the interwebs is BlackBerry holds a pretty major one with its own BBM in Indonesian territory. According to DailySocial, though, that all could be changing soon thanks to Telkomsel’s newly introduced all-you-can-message plans. The deal’s fairly simple, the Indonesian carrier’s bundling applications like Opera Mini, Line, WhatsApp and KakaoTalk in an unlimited package, with pricing starting at a mere 30,000 Rp (around $3) per month. Obviously, with the inclusion of a couple of the aforementioned apps, Indonesians could — in theory — also make calls without using their precious minutes, which is quite a good deal for under four bucks. In the end, it looks like it’ll come down to how attached folks are to all those BlackBerry Messenger pins and whistles.

Skyrim 1.7 available on Steam now
Posted in: Today's ChiliAfter spending a week in beta, it looks like the latest patch for Skyrim is now available for all players on Steam. According to an announcement on the official Bethesda blog, the Skyrim 1.7 update is out of beta and available to all Steam users. All you have to do is launch Skyrim on Steam and the update will automatically be downloaded and installed. The 1.7 update features general memory and stability optimizations, fixed crash related to new water shaders, fixed rare crash related to dragon landings, and several other gameplay bugs.
Does the release of patch 1.7 finally mean that Dawnguard is coming soon to the PC and PS3? Fingers crossed. The Skyrim 1.7 patch will also be made available for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 when the console manufacturers approve it – after Bethesda submits the updates this week.

Technology has improved the way the world watches the Olympics. Super slow-mo replay. The magical yellow world-record line. These are good things. The best part is how technology has made the information immediate, with live streams and instant updates. But the network responsible for delivering the games to America is broadcasting a tangled, discordant mess—and it’s ruining the 2012 Olympic experience. More »
US Census Bureau posts its first API, allows smartphone apps for the stat-obsessed
Posted in: Today's ChiliAs much as the US Census Bureau has worked to embrace the digital space, its sea of data has been largely locked away from developers not keen on doing much of the heavy lifting. As of late last week, however, there’s now a public app programming interface (API) for quickly putting all of that knowledge to work. Both mobile and web apps can hook into either the complete 2010 census or the 2006-2010 American Community Survey, bringing in basic demographics as well as more complicated subjects such as commuting habits and education. The Bureau sees the API leading to not just a more informed public, but to smarter government as well — imagine a state government that knows the income levels by county through a custom smartphone app. Budding statistics hounds can request a key for API use right away, but if you’d rather just see what public access will mean in practice, you can check out an app gallery at the second source link below.

Over the weekend there was news about an alleged Xbox 720 (codenamed Durango) developer kit that was put up for sale for $10,000 on a game company’s developer forum. Well, according to Digital Foundry’s unnamed industry sources working on AAA next-gen games – the machine was the real deal. However for those of you looking to see what the Xbox looks like, you’re out of luck. The developer kit is just a generic PC tower case which houses the hardware similar to the Xbox 720’s specs – but what’s inside is interesting.
