We’ve seen solar trees in real life, which provide shade as well as power to the city, in certain places of California, but this is the first time I have seen a miniature personal solar tree. The personal USB Solar Charger Treel, made by Brando, will charge up your smartphone thanks to its nine solar panels attached to the branches.
Installation is quite easy, all you have to do is connect a couple of wires, insert the tree branches, and attach the solar panels. You shouldn’t have any difficulty charging your smartphone no matter what device it is as the product comes with tons of connectors: Nokia I, Mini USB, Samsung, micro USB, Nokia II, PSP, LG, and the Samsung i900. If it happens to be raining, no need to worry as you can also use AC power to charge your devices. The USB Solar Charger Tree could definitely help save some money on electricity each year as well as provide portable charging power. It could also make a nice desk gift for a co-worker. It’ll set you back $55. Let us know what you think of the device in the comments section below and whether or not you’ll be getting one.

AUSTIN, Texas — Tea party darling Ted Cruz convincingly defeated the Republican establishment favorite, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, in Texas’ runoff election Tuesday, capturing the GOP nomination to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison as fiercely conservative voters shook one of America’s reddest states to its political core.
The race had been closely watched nationally as one of the most-vivid contrasts between the GOP mainstream and grass-roots, conservative activists. But as results began to pour in, it turned out to be no contest. Cruz completed the upset by grabbing advantages in key cities around the state where Dewhurst had once enjoyed stronger name recognition, fundraising and political organization.
Another day, another major blow to the webOS community. The Open webOS project announced today in its blog that the fledgling OS won’t support any of the existing hardware — like HP’s Pre 3 and TouchPad. While not completely surprising, this is disappointing for those who were hoping to wring a little more life out of their current webOS devices. Open webOS is targeting SoCs that support the Linux 3.3+ kernel and components with open source drivers. The blog post blames the existing hardware’s “many proprietary components, including graphics, networking and lack of drivers for a modern kernel”. Despite having access to these proprietary drivers, it appears HP isn’t willing to make them available to the Open webOS project — proof that sometimes you can have your cake, but not eat it too.

With company after company issuing excellent quarterly financial reports lately, it was only a matter of time before one of them reported less-than-stellar results. That company is Take-Two, which today reported GAAP losses of $110.8 million, ballooning from the reported loss of $8.6 million in the same quarter last year. Net revenue took a dive too, falling from Q1 2012′s $334.4 million to $226.1 million for the period ended June 30.
Similarly, gross profit fell by a rather large amount year-over-year, with Take-Two reporting a gross profit of $39.4 million, which compares poorly to the company’s report of $123.16 million a year prior. This disappointing report for Q1 has forced Take-Two to adjust its outlook for fiscal year 2013 ever so slightly, saying that it now expects to make $1.7 – $1.8 billion by the time the fiscal year comes to a close at the end of March. That’s only down from the $1.75 – $1.85 billion it was expecting previously, so it looks like this negative first quarter won’t take too much of a toll on the company’s pocketbook overall.
Though Max Payne 3 and Spec Ops: The Line were listed among Take-Two’s strongest earners for the quarter, CEO Strauss Zelnick blamed the poor quarterly report on lower-than-expected sales for both. It isn’t all bad news, however, as catalog sales – which were led by the Grand Theft Auto franchise and Red Dead Redemption – were up 50% in the quarter, and accounted for 24% of Take-Two’s net revenue. Digitally delivered content was on the rise as well, gaining 33% year-over-year to provide 14% of net revenue for the company.
Speaking of Grand Theft Auto, Zelnick did not let loose a release date for the highly-anticipated Grand Theft Auto V. He did say that Grand Theft Auto V is “in full development and showing substantial progress,” though, so it may not be much longer before we have a solid release date to look forward. Take-Two is expecting better looking quarters as the year goes on, thanks in part to the upcoming releases of Borderlands 2, NBA 2K13, and BioShock Infinite. Frankly, we can’t wait, so bring on the rest of fiscal year 2013!

Joe Lieberman Not Invited To Party Conventions Apparently Some Sort Of Surprising ‘Snub’
Posted in: Today's ChiliI don’t know who, exactly, thought that Sen. Joe Lieberman was somehow destined to play a major role at one or more of the 2012 political conventions this year, but The Hill‘s Alexander Bolton is reporting that the fact he hasn’t been extended an invitation to either the Republican National Convention in Tampa or the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte is a “major snub.”
Why? Because he “played prominent convention roles in the past.”
Oh, right! Who could forget that time he was chosen by then-presidential nominee Al Gore to be the vice president, thereby ensuring that he would play a “prominent role” at the Democratic convention? In the years since, of course, Lieberman became a huge supporter of the Iraq War, fell out of favor with the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, lost a primary as a result of that falling-out, re-emerged as an Independent, and returned to the Senate. He ended up at the 2008 Republican Convention because he was best buds with John McCain, who was running against Obama, the candidate who had emerged from the crowded field of Democratic contenders because of his specific opposition to the very war Lieberman fervently supported.
