MSI outs new CR41 notebook, hopes you like the color royal bronze

What’s rectangular, coated in a royal bronze finish, opens like a clam and lasts for up to seven and a half hours? If you answered MSI’s new CR41 notebook, you’d be right (though we would’ve accepted self-destructing jewelry boxes as an answer). The 14-inch multimedia “mobile companion,” announced just today, packs a 1,366 x 768 HD display, dedicated HM76 graphics chipset, choice of Intel’s third-generation Core i processors and comes in a variety of storage configurations: 500 GB, 640GB or 720GB. Weighing in at 5.3 pounds (2.4kg) and measuring 13.8 x 9.2 x 1.3 inches (349.7 x 234.8 x 32mm), the laptop also features a six-cell 4,400mAh battery, support for Bluetooth 4.0 and WiFi b/g/n, an optical drive, ports for HDMI, USB 3.0 (x2), USB 2.0 (x2), an SD slot and the requisite headphone jack. So far no official pricing or release dates have been made public for the Windows 7 rig, but when it does hit retailers’ shelves, rest assured it’ll be upgrade-ready for Redmond’s next great OS. Follow on past the break for the official PR.

The World’s First Microbot That Can Jump Across The Surface Of Water

The World First Microbot That Can Jump Across The Surface Of Water

Researchers in China have successfully created a microbot that can repeatedly jump across the surface of water. Weighing at only 11 grams, the robot has a super water-repellant nickel foam coating to help the microbot’s legs to stay afloat with every 5.5 inch (14 cm) leap. The ability to leap will make the microbot more agile and better able to avoid obstacles it encounters on the water’s surface. [Engadget]

Brandy Stevens-Rosine Case: Ashley Marie Barger, Nicole ‘Jade’ Olmstead Face Trial In Love Triangle Murder

VERNON, Pa. — Authorities say two lesbian lovers tortured and murdered 20-year-old Brandy Stevens-Rosine, an Ohio college student who was beaten and buried alive in a shallow grave behind the women’s secluded home.

Details of the May killing were revealed for the first time at a preliminary hearing this week for Ashley Marie Barber, 20, and Nichole “Jade” Olmstead, 18, who a judge ordered to stand trial on charges of homicide and conspiracy.

Krysti Horvat, a close friend of Stevens-Rosine, was in court to hear police and prosecutors present the gruesome evidence. “The night before the detectives told us some of the details so we would not be so terribly surprised, but even after that it was still shocking to hear what Brandy went through,” Horvat told The Huffington Post. “She was like the little sister that everyone would want to have, and for her to be brutally murdered is unfathomable.”

Mission District Shootings 2012: Wave Of Gun Violence Hits 24th Street Corridor

A shocking broad daylight shooting in the Mission district earlier this week was the latest in a wave of what police believe to be gang violence.

In just the last month alone, there have been four shootings within a three block radius along the 24th Street corridor.

The most recent incident occurred on Monday, July 23, when a masked gunman opened fire near the intersection of 24th and Harrison streets in front of the entrance to a neighborhood pre-school. Thankfully, in this case no one was hit.

London 2012 Olympics opening ceremonies highlights videos go live

If you somehow missed the best bits of the 2012 Olympics opening ceremonies in London, NBC and several friends have begun releasing some rather tiny shreds of video for you to watch over and over and over again right here and now. It all starts with one of the strangest shorts you’re ever going to see: Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second greeting none other than the most recent James Bond: actor Daniel Craig. Then it’s immediately back to the business of massive rings of fire, bell players, and Rocket Men – with of course a dash of tradition thrown in here and there as well.

First have a peek at this extremely short snippet of the Queen and her escort, agent 007. This scene displays the breadth of the influence England has had on the planet, everything from the most serious of business, the Queen herself, to a fictional character so well loved by the planet that he’s become essentially real. Of course there is no “real” 007, right? (shhhh)

Next you’ll see a video that NBC called “Pandemonium”, showing off the rings of fire as they float across the opening ceremonies in a grand display. You’ll also get to see some real live emotion from some very proud Brits as they reflect on the significance of the events while the rings connect.

Finally (for now), you’ll get to have a glance at the start of the musical portion of the events with none other than Davie Bowie starting things off right with real rocket packing men jamming through the arena. A dash of the greatest band in the history of the world sits afterward as well: Queen from beyond the grave.

Expect a whole lot more as the night pushes on – hopefully a full-on video of the entire night’s events before the bigger set of events are done!

Nissan pins Leaf’s WattStation charging woes on a software bug, works on a fix

Nissan Leaf in desert

GE and Nissan had previously ruled out GE’s WattStation as the cause of a few Leaf charging failures, and that story of EV tragedy looks to be winding to a close with a more definitive explanation. As the two tell us, a bug in the Leaf’s on-board charging software can damage the relevant hardware under a perfect storm of conditions: if a drivers uses a specific (but not necessarily GE) charger, an undervoltage or similar power crisis can bring the Leaf to its knees. Nissan says it’s hurrying towards a remedy, although we’re working to confirm just what that entails. In the meantime, the automaker is asking owners to be cautious and avoid plugging in when there’s lightning or brownouts in the making.
