You’ve Got to Be Crafty to Take Down the Empire With this LEGO Star Wars Chess Set [Daily Desired]

This whole rebellion business could have been handled with much more savvy than just blowing up home planets and Deathstars. Both sides could have sat down to a friendly no-holds-barred, all-or-nothing chess match with the fate of the galaxy on the line like civilized people. More »

Google Glass tech’s dark side blasted in science fiction short

Google Glass is definitely something to get excited about, but do we want a world where everything is constantly connected through devices like it? A few years ago the notion would have seemed absurd, but now a future where everyone uses devices like Google Glass is certainly a possibility. A new short film named Sight by Daniel Lazo and Eran May-raz examines such a future, and even though there are some exciting possibilities, there are also some pretty terrifying ones.

The film focuses on special contact lenses called “Sight” which allow users to see the world around them through the constantly-connected lenses. Things start out innocently enough, with our main character using his special contacts to turn his lunch preparation into a game and pick out his outfit for his upcoming date without ever leaving the couch. He then meets up with a girl named Daphne for their date, and secretly uses a dating app to help him win her affection. We’ll leave the rest to you to find out, because hey, we wouldn’t want to spoil the fantastic ending.

Being constantly-connected can have it’s benefits, but as the film shows, things don’t always turn out for the best when we end up relying too much on technology. Sight is equal parts beautiful and creepy, but the film’s creators tell VentureBeat that they didn’t intend for there to be a connection between Sight and Google Glass. In a strange series of coincidences, they say that they came up with the idea for a film centered around augmented reality, and few days after production began on Sight, Google released the first video for Google Glass. Still, even though there isn’t any intended connection between Sight and the current Google Glass craze, the film does serve as a possible snapshot of a future which may not be that far off. Enjoy!

Facebook’s mobile strategy is reportedly flawed, says report

The behemoth social network recently hosted its first earnings conference call yesterday with CEO Mark Zuckerberg casting the company’s direction. Zuckerberg said earlier that developing Facebook’s mobile platform is a top priority of the company. The CEO also highlighted its plans to increase revenue from mobile ads. Now, a new report sheds some light into Facebook’s mobile strategy. According to a research conducted by EyeTrackShop, an online eye tracking solutions company, Facebook’s ads on its mobile apps seems to perform quite poorly, particularly on the iPhone. EyeTrackShop reportedly analyzed the eye movements of individuals as they accessed Facebook on the web, the iPhone, and on the iPad.

They then examined the attention of the individuals to the ads displayed on the social network. The firm allegedly found out (as you can see in the photo above) that a fewer number of people are noticing the ads on Facebook’s iPhone app. Also, according to their research, they also found out that among the three platforms tested (web, iPad, and iPhone), iPhone ads were the least efficient for brand advertisers in terms of awareness and recall. EyeTrackShop could be wrong, but I would say that I don’t usually mind the ads on my Facebook account. How about you? Do you think that the research is a little biased?

Samsung Galaxy S Lightray 4G hides out in the open, headed to MetroPCS

What’s old is apparently new again for MetroPCS subscribers. Thanks to some leaked training materials over on Howard Forums, we have a pretty clear idea of the next Galaxy S device to bow on that budget carrier’s lineup — the Lightray 4G. No, your eyes aren’t deceiving you, we’ve seen this exact phone before at CES 2012 where it was part of Dyle’s Mobile TV showcase. And that chassis you see above? It’s a mostly unaltered version of Verizon’s Droid Charge, although that formerly pointed chin seems to have gotten the Ashlee Simpson treatment. Spec-wise, the 4.3-inch device reportedly packs a Super AMOLED Plus display, 1.3-megapixel front-facing / 8-megapixel rear cameras, 16GB of included microSD storage (what it’ll ship with onboard is unknown), HDMI-out and, bizarrely, that aforementioned TV tuner, replete with antenna. No word on when this unofficial fella’s set to go legit nor which Google OS treat it’ll run, but with a recently surfaced FCC doc and company slides to go off, we’re sure to find out sooner rather than later.

This device has a 4.8-inch 1280 x 720 Super AMOLED display, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich onboard, and AT&T 4G LTE connectivity in select locations across the USA.

This device also brings on the same fabulous 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor as each of the other USA-based Galaxy S III units and has a lovely 8 megapixel camera on the back with the ability to film 1080p video. You’ve got both 16 and 32GB built-in memory options and a microSD card slot with which you can expand your memory by another 64GB if you wish. Also under the battery cover is a massive 2100mAh battery that’ll have you powered up all day long, no worries.

You’ve got a choice between Metallic Blue, Ceramic White, and Garnet Red for this device when you pick it up on AT&T here in the USA, and inside you’ve got a collection of software and hardware perks that will make you want to purchase a device for each of your friends and family too. ‘666 Park Avenue’: Cast And Producers Preview ‘A Different Kind Of Horror’ At TCAs

If you take Terry O’Quinn and Vanessa Williams, add two devilishly villainous roles and a sprinkling of paranormal activity on the Upper East Side, it certainly sounds like a recipe for success. At least that’s what ABC is hoping for with its new supernatural series “666 Park Avenue,” which brought O’Quinn and Williams to the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour on Friday, along with co-stars Rachael Taylor and Dave Annable, and executive producers David Wilcox and Matthew Miller.

Lost” alum O’Quinn is no stranger to enigmatic roles, but his character Gavin Doran is a whole new breed of sinister — so creepy that even John Locke might hesitate to tangle with him. As the owners of the luxurious Drake at 666 Park Avenue, Gavin and his wife Olivia (Williams) may seem charismatic, but they — along with the building they inhabit — are hiding an undeniable dark side.

O’Quinn expressed his enthusiasm for playing “characters [with] a lot of secrets,” while “Desperate Housewives” star Williams compared her new character to one of her most iconic roles: Wilhelmina Slater on “Ugly Betty.”

Samsung London 2012 Predictor makes predictions fun

Samsung London 2012 PredictorSamsung really is going all out with this year’s London Olympic Games. Besides having its Galaxy S3 as the official phone for London 2012, the company has been pushing it as a hotel room key, decorating it with the UK flag, and even updating its ChatON app with an Olympic Buddy feature. It looks like that’s not all – the company has pushed out a new Olympic-themed app as well. Called Samsung London 2012 Predictor, this app makes it fun to predict winners of events by letting you go up against your friends on Facebook.

In addition to letting you know who’s the better predictor, the app will keep you updated with the Olympic scheduler to let you know what’s going on and at what time. The app is available for free on the Google Play Store. If you check it out, make sure your friends do too, so you won’t be alone.
