Samsung ChatON for Android gets Olympic Buddy feature, also sports a new logo

Ever since its debut late last year, Samsung’s ChatON application has been a moderate hit amongst folks using iOS, BlackBerry, Windows Phone and Android devices. Now, along with outing a slightly redesigned logo (pictured above), the Korean outfit’s also updated its app in Google’s sweet OS to version 1.9.5 on handsets, or 1.7.3 if you’re handling one of those larger slabs. Most notably, the ChatON refresh brings the London 2012 spirit with a timely “Olympic Buddy” feature, which keeps you in the loop by pushing out breaking news, daily schedules and, of course, medal tables. Additionally, there’s now a walkie-talkie service within the phone application, while the tablet variant gained the ability to send documents to your friends — not to mention it finally lets you use fancy emoticons. Feeling pretty antsy to give it a try? That Google Play link below will take you there.

Square Enix brings original Final Fantasy game to Android

You’ve probably played Final Fantasy before on your NES and might have some wonderful memories about it. If you’re getting a little nostalgic now, then an Android device will bring you back in time. Japanese video game developer Square Enix is now bringing the original Final Fantasy game to the Android platform. Square Enix has tweaked the graphics of the time to fit in your Android devices, so expect a slightly modernized version of the game.

Other than the minute changes to its gamplay, the game is still very much retro with the original story and characters included. Unlike Final Fantasy III, the original Final Fantasy game that was first released in Japan in 1987 is significantly cheaper at $6.99. You can get the game via Google Play. The size of the application is 46.39MB. Installation via Google Play requires approximately 240MB of available memory.

Apple’s gross margin for iPhone sitting around 50%

Anyone who follows tech and gadget news knows that Apple doesn’t like to talk about its margins on its individual devices, but thanks to a court filing recently unearthed by Reuters, we now have a better idea of what they are. According to the court filing – which includes a statement from an “Apple expert witness” – the company enjoyed a gross margin between 49 and 58 percent on the iPhone between April 2010 and March 2012. That’s a ridiculously high margin, which gives us a better idea of why Apple never wants to talk about the subject.

Apple’s gross margin on the iPhone far outpaces the margin it was getting on the iPad between October 2010 and March 2012, with the gross margin for the iPad only climbing to between 23 and 32 percent. During that period, Apple made $13 billion on iPad sales, compared to the $33 billion it made on iPhone sales. The gadget-loving public may currently be going crazy over the iPad, but these numbers show that the iPhone is still Apple’s money maker by far.

The iPad may leave something to be desired when it comes to individual margins, but when working as part of a whole, the iPad helps deliver healthy company-wide margins. Still, this is probably going to be the only look we get at gross margins for individual Apple devices for quite some time, so savor it while you can. Be sure to check out our story timeline below for more information on Apple’s products and the company’s recent earnings!

Razer Ouroboros: The Ambidextrous Gaming Mouse

I can appreciate a really good gaming mouse, because most of the time these kinds of devices have no perceivable lag and usually have quite a few programmable buttons. However, most gaming mice are built in dedicated versions for either right- or left-handed users. The Razer Ouroboros seeks to please lefties and righties everywhere.

The Razer Ouroboros is modeled on their recently released Taipan. The glowing green Ouroboros has three adjustable parts, including interchangeable side panels, tiltable back arch, and an adjustable length. Since no two hands are the same, you’ll be able to tweak the Ouroboros to fit right into your hand, whether you use your right or left hand for gaming.

GM testing pedestrian detection system powered by WiFi Direct (video)

GM testing pedestrian detection system powered by WiFi Direct

Car makers have been peddling wireless pedestrian avoidance systems almost as long as there have been automobiles. (We believe one of the earliest was called the “side view mirror.”) GM’s new experiment though, differs from other implementations by skipping out on the 3G, cameras and radar — instead going for a model built around WiFi Direct. The peer-to-peer 802.11 standard hasn’t exactly set the world on fire, but the WiFi Alliance is diligently tweaking the platform and apparently GM thinks its a perfect match for connecting cars, cyclists and pedestrians to each other. Unlike 3G-based systems, there’s little lag between locating and identifying bikes or people crossing the street since the signal doesn’t have to be bounced off a satellite. It also has a leg up on radar detection since WiFi can be a two way pipeline — alerting someone out for a stroll of an oncoming vehicle. Of course, it will be some time before anything like this actually makes it into a production vehicle. But, in the meantime, you can check out the PR and video after the break.

The Dark Knight Rises tribute watch by Jaeger-LeCoultre revealed

Unknown to a few Batman fans, Swiss high-end luxury watch and clock manufacturer Jaeger-LeCoultre has actually designed watches for Batman movies. And it seems that Bruce Wayne is loving the famed manufacturer’s work so far. Now that Christopher Nolan’s third and final Dark Knight Rises film has been released to complete the Batman trilogy, Jaeger-LeCoultre is honoring Gotham’s hero by designing a special tribute Reverso chronograph similar to the one worn by Christian Bale in the Dark Knight Rises flick. The watch features a flippable steel case and an engraved bat logo on the back, which is pretty awesome. Availability and pricing has not been announced, although you can check out this watch alongside the one worn by Val Kilmer in Batman Forever at specialty JLC boutiques in Geneva, London, Los Angeles and Hong Kong.

Nintendo explains how they test the 3DS

Nintendo DS testingThe Nintendo 3DS might not be marketed as a rugged gaming console, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t built to withstand accidental drops and the occasional knocks. Well, if you’re interested in finding out what sort of tests the Nintendo 3DS and DS go through during testing you’re in luck. As part of its 2012 consumer report, Nintendo released a few pictures in addition to a summary of its testing process for the Nintendo 3DS. Nothing extraordinary is revealed here – the DS has to pass the keying test (durability of its buttons), compression test, vibration test, wear test, drop test, and hinge test – though there are probably more tests that aren’t mentioned here.

Nintendo also tests its product packaging to make sure that the 3DS isn’t harmed during transport, which makes sense since the console has to fly thousands of miles across the world before it reaches our hands. Anyway if you want to read up more about it, you can check out Nintendo’s Consumer Report 2012.
