Mitt Romney: Arab Spring Could’ve Been Avoided By Bush’s ‘Freedom Agenda’

In an interview with the right-wing Israeli daily newspaper Israel Hayom, Mitt Romney said that the Arab Spring might never have happened had Bush’s “freedom agenda” not been prematurely halted by President Barack Obama.

“President [George W.] Bush urged [deposed Egyptian President] Hosni Mubarak to move toward a more democratic posture, but President Obama abandoned the freedom agenda and we are seeing today a whirlwind of tumult in the Middle East in part because these nations did not embrace the reforms that could have changed the course of their history, in a more peaceful manner,” Romney said.

Romney argued that with the rise of democratically elected Islamist governments in some of the countries undergoing revolutions — Egypt and Tunisia in particular — the Arab Spring has turned out to be less of a boon for Western interests than it initially appeared.

Virginia Foxx Slammed For Seeking Political Gain Off Aurora Tragedy

WASHINGTON — Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) had no business invoking the Aurora, Colo., shootings to advance a completely unrelated partisan bill, her Democratic challenger declared on Thursday.

“Using a painful national tragedy to push for excessively partisan legislation, as was attempted today by my opponent, exemplifies the reason that Americans are so fed up with members of Congress,” Elisabeth Motsinger said in a statement. “We should pray for those who are suffering and use this as an opportunity to unify as compassionate Americans.”

During a Thursday House debate on a GOP regulatory bill, Foxx made a tearful plea to Democrats to agree to fix a typo in the bill on the spot, instead of following the regular procedure of sending the bill back to committee. Life is too precious to waste, she said, and the House should hurry up and pass the bill. Foxx’s comments came shortly after the House passed a resolution honoring the victims of the Colorado shooting.

Windows Phone 8 SDK leaks show quiet upgrades to backup, media and the kitchen sink

Windows Phone 8 SDK leak shows us big backup, browser and Xbox revamps

The Windows Phone 8 SDK has escaped to the wild, and some sifting through the device emulator has dug up elements that Microsoft either skipped or only touched on lightly during the big unveiling in June. The most important addition may be the one customers see the least: backup. A WP7.hu search has the new OS replicating apps, settings and SMS messages in the cloud to prevent disaster, and that new SD card support will let WP8 owners shuffle photos from internal storage to the removable kind for safekeeping. There’s also more work on Internet Explorer than we saw before, with MobileTechWorld noticing that DataSense provides an option for Opera-like remote compression to save that precious cellular bandwidth.

Media fans might have the most to gain. If we go by The Verge, both the Music/Video and Xbox hubs are getting fresh coats of paint — both to integrate new ventures like Xbox Music as well as to jive more closely with the SmartGlass visual theme. Shutterbugs will like the long-awaited options to crop and rotate their work, pick multiple photos, and unify third-party camera apps under a Lenses concept. There’s even more clever features in store, such as a Maps update that finds nearby WiFi hotspots, so head on over to the sources to get a full sense of where Microsoft will be going.

‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ Fashion Ads Were Kind Of Inevitable (PHOTO)

If you thought you couldn’t avoid “Fifty Shades Of Grey” during your public transit commute already, it looks like the erotic novel will inundate the pages of another train diversion this fall when fashion glossies begin running a “Fifty Shades”-inspired ad campaign.

Andrew Marc’s upscale brand division Marc New York took inspiration from the steamy storyline for their Fall 2012 ad campaign, which features 2012 “Celebrity Apprentice” contestant and 2008 Miss Universe winner Dayana Mendoza and former Scottish rugby player Thom Evans. The shot captures the two in quite a suggestive pose with Ms. Mendoza’s dress unzipped and Thom sporting nothing more than a towel. The overall result is surprisingly tame though considering the influence.

This is an interesting choice for the the brand’s very first advertising campaign — we’re not sure how many people will be focusing on the clothes here. But, with everyone trying to snag a piece of the “Fifty Shades” pie (don’t forget about all of the book’s clothing, makeup and houseware lines coming your way), it’s not surprising that the high fashion world would have a go at it. According to Women’s Wear Daily, the ads will run in the September and October issues of Glamour and People Style Watch, so the faint of heart should be well-prepared to avert their eyes on the subway by then.
